I recently got a question about some nice 3D humanoid stimuli we used in an old study, which came from the university technical department at the time. But they're really easy to make yourself independently if you don't have such a department!

A nice intro-tutoral on posing 3D models in Blender here: https://rhkibria.medium.com/how-to-pose-human-figures-with-blender-without-prior-experience-a421f72047ab.

And there are places shop for pre-made, posable models, e.g., https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/character/man/modular-military

'Buying a flat ruined my life': Leaseholders plead for tougher legislation against home ownership 'scam'

https://news.sky.com/story/buying-a-flat-ruined-my-life-leaseholders-plead-for-tougher-legislation-against-home-ownership-scam-13060858

"Why is it that when it benefits the freeholder, you're a leaseholder, but when it doesn't, you're a homeowner?"

"Leasehold needs abolishing, not updating. It's a relic of a feudal system," he added.

"With leasehold, you're not buying the flat. You're buying the right to live in the flat. It's a scam."

I'm more and more convinced there really is a sickness in English culture around relatively petty power - suspect the reality is way too often that it's "I'm the boss now, obey me losers" not "I have responsibility now".

@paulisci I feel like this is a fair request, but only if they come around and take care of the scheduled event, perhaps using special Lancaster City Health Department mallets.

Why the need to reboot Highlander? Nothing at all wrong with Henry Cavill, but can’t they think of something new?

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@helenclayton

I think more people need to start consciously seeking out the old shows again. I went through West Wing, Buffy, and Angel relatively recently and they hold up really well, IMHO.

And yeah, make new stuff for new people and new times. Or at least people could find a way to continue stories rather than reboot them...

This might be setting expectations slightly high but feels as if it might be like the Indian version of a combined Ong Bak, John Wick, Kill Bill and Princess Bride aaaaah :O

It's going to at least popularize that dang-de-dang-de-dang-de-dang sound as the new Eye of the Tiger style motivation music for me.

Billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money has been poured down the drain because of this Conservative government’s incompetence. I have to stay up late a lot during paternity leave, so I’ve developed a side project during night shifts of watching movies and miniseries chronicling prominent social justice figures or movements.

I’ve watched several so far (BET’s Madiba series on Nelson Mandela was new to me, and great), and it’s fascinating to find connections — e.g., how often South Africa or South African figures such as Desmond Tutu appear in other stories.*

Thus: any suggestions?

Hands up if you've ever been bored in an academic talk?

I know its controversial to say, but most of what we see is the shit presentation practice.

We need to break the cycle of everyone doing the same old shit if we talks to reflect the brilliance of the work.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@d_yellowlees It's an interesting question. Although - some of the, say, high-profile academics I worked for spent a lot of time on presentation (perhaps unkindly but arguably their main contribution).

I think I'd fall more on the other side, as from my POV academia has already shifting very much into incentivizing marketing/consultancy/sales values, on the hand, and customer service/entertainment values on the other. In that sense, I put a bit more trust in the boring academic talk!

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@d_yellowlees Although some training in basic, don't-put-1000-words-in-a-tiny-font-on-your-slide, think-about-your-audience, etc presenting skills, absolutely!

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@d_yellowlees It's not so much about being unserious/unfun, for me anyway but I assume similarly for other people who are also a little suspicious of "slick" presentations. It's more, I think, about concern that bad or mediocre science could be hidden by dazzle, or that good science could get disadvantaged by being presented "dryly" if that's not what you feel should be important. The intuition that there's a predictive if not directly causal negative correlation to consider...

@realsimon If I understand correctly (from https://protohologram.com/), the capture side of things can be done via just a smartphone, and then they use AI instead of something like multiple cameras. But I'm not sure, it seems like there could be different capture devices that might make a difference in quality.

LNER to scrap off-peak rail tickets between London and Edinburgh.

David Horne, managing director at LNER, said the firm was “at the forefront of rail reform”, adding: “Simplifying fares is vital in making rail travel more attractive.

You know what would make rail travel more attractive? Cheaper, reliable travel. That means renationalisation and reinvestment, rather than handing profits to shareholders. 🤷

Salesperson just tried to sell my mum - in her 80s - an extremely expensive chair. She called me, I advised her just to take her time and not make a decision today. Guy immediately left saying he'd wasted his time and making some comment about me.

I checked and found online review with comments complaining about their sales tactics on elderly people.

28 Years Later might be happening. Curious, but it reminds me of the visceral reaction I notice I have to some Garland films, where I feel like the misogyny is so awful it's almost glorified (and I'm not like radically ideological in any way about watching movies). I've seen some chat against the use of the phrase "openly gay" recently. I don't get it. It's a useful term: it means that someone has publicly and comfortably (one hopes) spoken about their sexuality (when not everyone does), and that it's not speculation. Visibility is crucial.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@zefrog I saw the (I assume) origin, from an Actor's Round Table - https://www.tiktok.com/@hollywoodreporter/video/7320701720328162602. So some part of the explanation might be how well/charismatically Andrew Scott expressed it. I see his point that, at this point in time, the extra modifier "openly" kind of carries an almost-always unnecessary negative association. It kind of anti-normalizes it perhaps.
