@pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @TEG @melissaryan

Should it be permissible to advocate genocide against Jews at Harvard, though? Because the rules allowing for it are still on the books.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan I thought the communication at that hearing was awful, but I read Gay did clarify to say "“Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic group are vile. They have no place at Harvard, and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account.”", https://www.timesofisrael.com/heads-of-harvard-penn-condemn-jewish-genocide-calls-after-appearing-to-condone-speech/. I suspect they were wrongfooted somehow and overcompensated towards abstract academic freedom.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan It's certainly possible but there is a heavy dose of framing there - as in, it's not that they're specifically permissive of genocide against Jews in particular, they're just generally defensive about academic freedom and concerned with subtle, higher-order effects of a priori forbidding speech (that could be taken as) expressing any particular opinion.

And check out the very last sentence. Are the academics really the danger here?

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan But you see the point right - you wouldn't want Great Replacement types to fool you into thinking they're on your side and the academics are the enemy. I don't think that aspect should be lost, regardless of the discussion about limits of academic freedom.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan You said you'd read the last sentence of the article, which points out: "Stefanik, a Harvard alumnus, has herself faced accusations of using antisemitic canards in the past, and elevating “great replacement theory” rhetoric."

There are, obviously, sides involved here, e.g., the side of white nationalism and the great replacement theory and so on. I'm assuming you're not on that side.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan I was talking about not seeing academics as the enemy though, so you might have overreacted to the word a bit, with your "fucking fuck" and so on.

I do think it's important to have an awareness of the "sides" involved here though, if there's an element of White Nationalists manipulating people into believing a possibly manipulative narrative about, say, Gay/Harvard/etc supporting antisemitism.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan Well, I'm not an expert either! I've never seen that movie even.

But to my limited understanding of American politics, the American right wing has been attacking "liberal" universities for a while now. Found a Time article: https://time.com/6319108/conservative-universities/. E.g., it says, "Now, GOP governors and partisan administrators are pursuing the far right’s vision of radically unmaking the university to safeguard their preferred worldview."

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan And the Times of Israel piece ended by linking the person who put those presidents on the spot to Great Replacement Theory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Replacement).

So all I'm saying is, I worry that there's possibly something nasty going on with the attacks on these presidents, that's not truly aimed at protecting Jews. Even though at the same time there could be problems with antisemtism on campus.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@nicholas_saunders @pomegranate_stew @thetechtutor @melissaryan I think I'll give it a watch sometime!

Claudine Gay pens an essay about her resignation. Everyone should read and absorb this paragraph. Because it encapsulates everything that the next year is going to be. From the election to culture, education, culture, you name it. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/03/opinion/claudine-gay-harvard-president.html

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@thetechtutor @melissaryan I was curious about the plagiarism issues - e.g., from the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-67868280),

"Harvard's board investigated the allegations last month, and found two published papers that required additional citation.

The board, however, said that she did not violate standards for research misconduct."

So, just on that part, it does indeed sound like the kind of non-misconduct errors that could be abused to target any academic for.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@ThatPrilla @thetechtutor @melissaryan For me, this FT article is the first one I've found that hits the complexity - it addresses things both you and @thetechtutor are saying: https://www.ft.com/content/6a93c6d8-eb62-4316-b13a-dbd24794e117.

Two things could be true at the same time: (1) some kinds of social justice activism can clash with antisemitism, where there's a bias in who deserves sensitivity, and this is affecting people on campus, and (2) there were bad reasons to take down these presidents, not aimed at protecting Jews.

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

@ThatPrilla @thetechtutor @melissaryan The Financial Times article is paywalled even though it wasn't when I read it before, annoyingly, but from memory what it suggested was that were two different groups that wanted (e.g.) Gay gone, for two different reasons. I believe you're right about the right-wing conservatism attacking academia playing a significan role, but there was also a motivation based on real fears of rising antisemitism. Maybe causing an element of talking past each other here?

Been playing Signalis - good psycho-horror with at least one nice meta-screw-with-the-player moment so far, action + puzzles, dystopian aesthetic. The thing I don't like is having too little idea about how available ammunition will be so I'm stockpiling too much and Benny Hill-running around enemies too much - I think only with hindsight I get what the design was going for. Stagnated a bit yesterday and not sure I have the emotional resilience to go back and finish it though...

TEG,
@TEG@mastodon.online avatar

Went back and finished it! It ended up being the right length I think. Definitely in the category of "work of art" types of game.

One element of the story towards the end nicely and unexpectedly added to the horror, so I'd not predicted the whole story after all.

The world/setting is a slow burn, actually - it's still percolating in my brain a bit.

@bookstodon In my quest for physical copies of several out of print books, I have had some success with BookFinder, Abe, Thrift Books, Bookshop, and Better World Books. Are there other services I should try?

I'm trying to expand my Stephen Graham Jones collection in particular, and it's daunting, esp. finding THE LONG TRIAL OF NOLAN DUGATTI in print. Ha. Maybe it's my long trial.

Finished Blood West, lovely little game. Genetic line very much going back to Thief, hence I'm sure some very unhappy players who expect to just wade in and shoot everything. Not that I didn't get killed all the time at the start ("surely I can handle two crowmen"), and the resurrection mechanism is a little punishing, you're really supposed to avoid it. Very atmospheric and the right length - if the maker does a sequel it'll need something extra I think.
