Like clockwork, on Wednesdays, my Sidekiq pull Queues jump to 3K most of the day. After a half a day or so, it comes back around.

I wonder if there is a post dump by a bot or some task my server is doing? I am thinking a weekly task must be running.

I need to dig into my logs, crons, etc.

.

ThaMunsta,
@ThaMunsta@nervesocket.com avatar

@paul hmm over the last month I do see about 20k more processed tasks than, let's say... Saturday or Sunday which seem to be quieter days. If you look at daily is it significantly more variance for you?

ThaMunsta,
@ThaMunsta@nervesocket.com avatar

@paul oh interesting. I have needed to add a few domains to a DNS rewrite because the jobs would time out. When there are a lot of timeouts it has clogged my queue before. I also had a disk scrubbing task slow IO down enough to clog it. Both were annoying to try and track down the cause.

Well, guess I won't be migrating away from Mastodon after all 😩🤦‍♂️

I use it strictly from my iPhone most of the time and I still haven't found an app that would work with either Sharkey or Pleroma.

So I guess I'm stuck unless someone knows of an app I could use...😔

Update: I have found a neat looking app that supports MULTIPLE Fedi softwares.

@BeAware does the website have a PWA install? I hate all the mastodon apps because nothing is truely feature complete for moderation or administration so I just installed the website as an app. Is that a thing on iPhone?

I took some pseudo-selfies with my Sony Mavica FD5 from 1997, which saves jpegs on a floppy disk. Amazingly, this is the high quality mode!

ThaMunsta,

@foone inserting that floppy be like "get in the damn robot Shinji" lmao does it ever refuse to take photos because of the years of trauma?
Jokes aside yeah that's surprisingly great quality especially if you can take 500 that look like that

To my fellow ai art enthusiasts on mastodon.social, your account is no longer safe on that instance.

I recommend migrating your account to an instance that is more tolerating of your right to self expression and creativity.

@BeAware looks like other large instances will be doing the same

ThaMunsta,
@ThaMunsta@nervesocket.com avatar

@BeAware with any social media software there will be a mass of people with their hands tied. Fedi allows technically inclined people to make their own rules but it still leaves a lot of people stuck. I'm just not sure what issue Eugen is trying to solve with the new rules. I'm sure most people there just want to post cat pictures without having to see Elons tweets forced into their home feed 🤔

As you said that's not a new problem or one limited to images. Over half of anything on Reddit I can't tell if it's fact or fiction. It's always been that way.

To anyone who thinks the recent spells the end of fedi and that small instances will never be the same and the end is nigh and... Take a breath.
It can be incredibly simple to set up a mastodon instance - yes. However, in most cases it's quite involved.
Ticking the box for approved sign ups; Adding hCaptcha that (largely) prevents this kind of thing from happening, IS FREE AND SIMPLE. Compared to the rest of the setup process - it would be like building an entire house and going "Well ya I suppose we could put a lock on the front door or something too, sure."
Yesss we have a long way to go and this has uncovered deficiencies in both hosting and moderation of an instance but holy crap the posts I keep seeing that make it sound like fedi is dead lmao this wasn't the first bump in the road and it won't be the last.
I do acknowledge some instances will never return/recover from the operating cost (time/money) of this. I sympathize but it might be necessary.

It's not much different to me than the people who poorly run email servers that end up sending thousands of spam emails. And I see the term "hobbiest" thrown around a lot. I don't exactly know what that means but I'll side with them and say it's not exactly their fault. If someone never used Linux and wanted to try it... how would they know it's not ok to install it expose ssh with a default password and go to bed? Or ftp guest access on a public website? Or the thousands of vulnerabilities and exploits for all kinds of web software. WordPress is almost too easy to just setup and not know what you're doing. I think we just gotta help these people out and if the instance becomes abandoned or isn't maintained just spread the word over the FediBlock hashtag. For now. Eventually I hope to see new features or tools that make life easier for everyone on here.

Gargron, to random
@Gargron@mastodon.social avatar

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

ThaMunsta,
@ThaMunsta@nervesocket.com avatar

@Gargron it needs to be easier for moderators to find report and suspend accounts or instances that are compromised. It's hours of clicking to do it "properly" right now and I don't have a full time staff - it's just me doing clean up 🥲

sam, to random

Introducing Citadel! Citadel makes it quick and easy to suspend spammers and send reports to their admins - in one click!

Eventually Citadel will have more tools, but I wanted to get this out ASAP to help server admins.

Give it a shot: https://citadel.samw.dev

Do others boost their own posts every now and then so new followers could see them?

I've done this but I was recently made aware that some think it's an issue.

What do you think? Is it okay to boost your own posts?

ThaMunsta,
@ThaMunsta@nervesocket.com avatar

@BeAware
I'm always cool with people using a boost in lieu of quote toots. ie: boost someone else's post/reply then boost your reply to them. I don't know any other way of sharing information and giving context to the conversation unless writing a brand new post summarizing it all. Largely I would say it falls into the category of noise though. Unless your followers increased by 200% I'm not sure it's worth possibly losing existing followers who are just like wtf I already read that post. But Mastodon has all kinds of ways filter things if they really were annoyed enough to do something about it. tl;dr: I don't see it as a "problem" but I can see how people might be annoyed by it

Browsing #hashtags is quickly becoming useless. Even important ones for #MastoAdmin like #Fediverse and #Mastodon are filled with toots of random #photos and #art. Some even promoting their #porn or #gamedev #gaming project. Even random #journal or #blog posts FILLED with random irrelevant hashtags. It's quite infuriating...if you know what I mean.🤦‍♂️😬

ThaMunsta,
@ThaMunsta@nervesocket.com avatar

@BeAware
yaaa I agree (and I'll ignore the irony of you using those hashtags to complain about how those hashtags are filled with crap hahaha 😛 since its how I may not have found the post otherwise) but I'm not mad just annoyed. To me it's like if you had a well organized music collection and someone started putting random songs in weird places. Or like someone shit in my sandbox and now my sand castle stinks... At least we can mute/moderate/limit/suspend people/instances who frequently abuse them. I don't mind the odd thing sneaking in when someone just doesn't realize they are using the tag wrong. It's still better than when I see people posting something like # today I # went to the # store and # bought some # food and its like just say all that and maybe tag something specific like was it # organic?? Tag why someone would care at all about your stupid post at all but its not like that part of all this comes with a how-to manual or best practices.

Sure I may not love using any part of MS Office but I don't think I'll ever hate it the way 2004 me hated using Word to write essays. I would need to hit save out of paranoia because it crashed every 15 minutes. Ya those were frustrating times.

So I wanted to do some attachment cleanup...
For context, I'm a very small instance but use relays that have tons of instances which is great for content variety; but some post more/larger attachments than others and aren't relevant to anyone on here. Mostly weather bots or ATC info etc. I wanted to find these more efficiently. So I wrote some SQL and wanted to share in case maybe someone else finds it useful!
