GARY NUMAN
The Pleasure Principle
1979 Canada pressing

Once I finished listening to the John Foxx record, I had to put this on.
Gary & John are two artists that are forever entwined for me.

The Pleasure Principle is one of the greatest albums of all time, regardless of genre or era, and NO I did not stutter.

Without Gary (and John as well), it’s hard to imagine a world that has Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, or Depeche Mode.
Just a legendary artist.

THE WAR ON DRUGS
Lost In The Dream
2014 2xLP Worldwide pressing

Some outstanding early Thursday morning vibes with this one.

One of the greatest compliments you can pay ANY band is that you know it’s THEM when you hear them.

I still feel that this is their most fully realized record. Everything they do exceptionally well is on display here, and Adam Granduciel’s songwriting is at its apex.
Just stellar.

If you ever get a chance to see them live, do so.
Phenomenal.

TERENCE TRENT D’ARBY
Terence Trent D'Arby's Neither Fish Nor Flesh: A Soundtrack Of Love, Faith, Hope, And Destruction
1989 U.S. pressing

TTD had a massive ego, & fancied himself the second coming of Prince.
Trust me.
I met him.

The reality always was that he was a cheap dime store poor man’s version of Prince.
Only without the hits.

That being said, his 1st album was pretty decent. It even had a hit.

This one though?
👎
Terrible and pretentious.

Who is an artist for you where, when you hear them, regardless of song, album, whatever…
INSTANTLY makes you cringe and sends you into a fit of rage?

An artist or band where you’d rather slice your own ears off than ever hear them again.

Mine is easy.

What about you guys?

SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE
Diary
2017 U.S. 2xLP Ltd. Ed. Reissue

A monster album for me when I was in high school.
Being a total devotee of all things Sub Pop in the #90s , this one hit me in a way that none of the label’s other releases at the time.

I remember buying it on tape, & it taking me at least a week to get past the first 3 songs, because I kept rewinding it after Song For An Angel and playing those 3 over & over.

Amazing album that still holds up.

SEX PISTOLS
Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols
2020 Europe Reissue

Needed upgrade from my og UK pressing, which has seen FAR better days.

Reviews on THIS were pretty positive, so I grabbed one to have a good playable copy.

I put it on my turntable and was astonished. It sounds FUCKING GREAT.
Big, punchy, dynamic. Just massive sounding on my speakers.
I am beyond pleased.

Is there a better or more effective one trick pony in music history?

BOBBY HUTCHERSON
Cirrus
1974 U.S. pressing

One of my 3 favorite albums to get my Thursday morning started.

A hauntingly beautiful record.

My 14 yr old has just started to appreciate certain kinds of jazz music, and Cirrus was one of the records that did it for him. Like his father, he isn’t totally wild about the genre, but knows the kind he likes when he hears it.

A great choice to go with my apple pancakes this morning.

DE LA SOUL
3 Feet High And Rising
2023 Europe 2xLP Reissue
Yellow Opaque Vinyl

1 of my 3 ALL TIME favorite album. A masterpiece of the genre.

I was in the mood to hear this, & thought I had it in my library, but didn’t.

So I remedied that & grabbed this excellent sounding reissue.
Deep, thumpy, & killer.

We recently lost David Jolicoeur (Plug 2) in ‘23.
When our time is over, we should all be so lucky to have given a gift like this to the world.

TIN MACHINE
Tin Machine
1989 Canada pressing

I love both Tin Machine albums, but it has less to do with Bowie than it does with Reeves Gabrels. His guitar playing on both is otherworldly.

This album is better than the second on whole, but still not looked upon favourably by Bowie disciples and I don’t know why.

It is a killer metallic slice of art-rock. A pre-cursor (along with Pixies) for what would happen throughout the next decade.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
No 4
2015 Europe MOV Reissue

Starting Sunday off with an extremely underrated STP album.
Although they were pretty much done being a regular touring act due to Scott’s “issues” (I was lucky enough to see them three times), they were still able to make really great studio albums, of which I think No. 4 is the last TRULY great one.

It’s a great balance of early raucous STP (Down) and the more moody textural material (Sour Girl, Atlanta).

LINDA COHEN
Leda
1972 Canada pressing

A wonderful avant- garde album that is perfect for the windy, raw night that’s raging outside.

Linda Cohen was a self-taught musician from Philadelphia. LEDA is a folk album of fingerpicked guitar, accompanied by modular & bass.
It has a comforting electronic sound; with some flashes of psychedelia about it.
Quite the captivating record.
I have no memory of where or when I got it, but I’ve had it since 2007 at least.

THE POSIES
Frosting On The Beater
2018 U.S. 2xLP Reissue

One of the greatest albums of the if not all time.

This is one of my Desert Island Discs, and not even Ken Stringfellow’s horrible atrocious behaviour can effect my love for it. There is not one musical misstep, not a single flaw to be found anywhere.
Auer and Stringfellow never reached these heights again. Just one of those lightning in a bottle type albums, but what a bolt it was.

BUGGLES
The Age Of Plastic
1980 Canada pressing

Fun on a Sunday morning.

THAT song was (and still is) so big, that nobody ever really talks about how good the album is as a whole. It’s a super-fun slice of innovative #80s #synthpop & never disappoints whenever I put it on.

Trevor Horn had a magnificent career as a producer post-Buggles, but had this been the only thing he’d ever done, that’s a career enough in itself.
Love this album so much.

PLATINUM BLONDE
Standing In The Dark
1984 Canada pressing

I had never heard of them until Id moved to #canada in ‘07, where copies of their records are abundant and in every used shop.

This is a fantastic power pop album, start to finish. Great hooky songs.

However, this is where it kinda ends for them.
After this, the band added a keyboard player, and everything got very… #80s . And not in a good way.
But there’s no denying how good THIS one is.

I hung a shelf above my television and stereo system with the intent to keep little mini-stacks of in my current listening rotation.

MILO on the other hand, had other plans from the get-go, instantly claiming it as his “Sky Lounge”; a place from up on high where he can look down on the world, and judge us as the vapid, soulless and morally bankrupt creatures we are.

Well played Milo, you magnificent bastard.

THE SPECIALS
The Specials
1980 Canada pressing

A fun listen for the Hump Day blues.

Produced by Elvis Costello, it’s just one of those classic endlessly playable and FUN albums.

I can’t spin this without immediately wanting to hear The Selecter’s Too Much Pressure afterward.
So that’s probably hitting the table after this gem.

PIXIES
Surfer Rosa
2004 U.S. Reissue

Looks like I’m having a Pixies weekend at my place.
That’s how it starts.
You throw on one, & then you throw on ALL of em.

There’s nothing left to say about Surfer Rosa. It’s all been said before. An indie masterpiece, & somehow, it sounds better with each passing year.

Instructions For Starting An Indie Rock Band From Scratch:

  1. Meet people
  2. Get instruments
  3. Buy copy of Surfer Rosa
  4. Do what they do
  5. Enjoy

FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS
The Raw And The Cooked
1988 Canada pressing

Despite how massive “She Drives Me Crazy” was (& still is), I feel that this is one of the great underrated ALBUMS of all time. A very artful record that has aged very well.
Better than a lot of the other pop that came out around that same time.
But let’s put that aside…

You NEVER hear Roland Gift’s name mentioned in regards to the great vocalists in history. Pop or not.
That’s insane.

DROP NINETEENS
Delaware
2024 Europe MOV pressing

I’d been after a copy of this album for a very long time, but I was never going to pay $200 for an original pressing of it.
So happy somebody finally reissued this great album; a bit of a lost gem of the thing, and one of the best albums to ever come out of my hometown of Boston.
If you like the genre, and don’t know this album, I strongly recommend it.
Thank you MOV for a great sounding pressing.

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS
A Flock Of Seagulls
1982 Canada pressing

All these years later… still a fun as hell pop record.

One of my five or so preferred pop albums from that decade. “Space Age Love Song” is an incredible song, and it’s not even what this record is known for.

If there’s any young kids out there reading this, and you’re into or straight music in general, spend some time with this.
Classic and essential.

THE JESUS LIZARD
Goat
2023 US REISSUE
Ltd. Ed. White vinyl

One of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time.

They never waivered.
Not one misstep, not one bad song, not a single bad album.
They were punishing live; with one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time in Sims and McNeilly, as well as the greatest frontman/showman/singer of the in David Yow, who by the way, is the kindest dude I’ve ever met.
A monster JL album in a long line of many.

FUZZ

2013 U.S. pressing

Killer hazy, heavy #garagerock with Ty Segall playing drums.

A friend bought me this when it came out in ‘13, and it took me a while to click with it. Now, I listen to it multiple times a year, and it’s become a fun album I consistently revisit.

Super #stonerrock goodness, particularly the song “What’s In My Head?”.

1976 pressing

Saw this in a clearance bin today, & had to have it.
I had no idea what it was. Didnt care.
When you see a cover like THIS, you hand over $ 2 & ask questions later.
I mean, THAT is fucking beautiful.

The artists name is KEI OGURA and the music is sort of orchestral folk pop? I kinda dig it, but the cover’s heading into a frame.
Anyone speak Japanese? Would like to know the album name.

LED ZEPPELIN
And IV To Go
1987 U.S. Unofficial Bootleg

Found this in a thrift a few years back. It wasn’t even in with the records, as I found it in a box of old magazines.

The label says “American Heroes” as the artist, and falsely identifies the label as “Ugly Duckling Music”.

Musically, it’s got a few variations of Stairway To Heaven on it, a few random instrumentals, a Black Dog rehearsal tape, as well as No Quarter.

Cool artifact, but a rough listen.
