SLOWDIVE
Slowdive
2017 U.S. pressing

Slowdive has followed in the line of Mission Of Burma, Dinosaur Jr.,& Quicksand, in that their “reunion” records were just as good, if not better, than their previous classic works.

In the case of Slowdive, this was the first in 22 years, & is STELLAR.
The same can be said of their latest album as well, which I also recently posted, & am still taking in.
Both albums make me appreciate the other that much more.

BLACK SABBATH
Sabotage
1975 Canada pressing

A little Sunday Sabbath never hurt anyone.
I friggin’ love Sabotage. The back-to-back punch of Symptom Of The Universe and Megalomania do it for me every time. Not to mention the epic, gnarly closer The Writ.
It’s almost time to find a new play copy of this, as I’ve had it a long time and have drilled it into the ground.
I will continue to.
One of my favorite hard rock records ever.

DAVID AXELROD
Seriously Deep
1975 U.S. pressing

Another artist I’ve only just begun to explore.

A friend of mine gifted me two AXELROD albums (this, and Heavy Axe), which is beyond generous because they’re both very pricey: each over $100 CAD.

I’m definitely feeling it. A bit of a vibe goin on this one.
When he gave them to me, he told me “he’s not for everyone” and also that A Tribe Called Quest (who I’m a big fan of) were among many who’ve sampled him.

Look what I found today!!!
Does anybody remember Capacitance Electronic Discs?

Theyre analog video discs where playback on TVs were achieved by using a stylus, similar to that of records. Fucking wild!

Developed by RCA, they failed MISERABLY; due to MANY reasons. By the time they figured it out, they were obsolete, rendered useless by VHS and Laser Discs.

I bought these for $5 for use as art pieces, & because they’re a few of my favorite movies. 💩

MADVILLAIN (Doom and Madlib)
Madvillainy
2019 U.S. 2xLP reissue

This past summer, I took my teenage son & two of his friends to see a concert in Seattle, & to visit the MoPop Museum. There was a cool + exhibit there, & Doom’s signature metal mask was on display.
For the following months, my son was fully immersed in this album; one of the greatest, unique & artful hip-hop albums of all time.
My son raided my collection & stole this. So I’m stealing it back. 😂

INXS
Kick
1987 U.S. pressing

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve listened to THIS.

One of my older sisters was a huge INXS fan in the , and it was through her that I heard not only THIS album, but Listen Like Thieves also.
This has a bunch of hit singles, and is probably their best 80s record, but I grew into a much bigger fan of the albums, particularly Welcome To Wherever You Are, which is their best record PERIOD.
But no denying how great this one is.

@TheVinylApe@masto.ai avatar

post-Covid has become a living, breathing repugnant nightmare.

Your friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape was already supposed to be back on Van Isle; in the loving arms of my wife + son (& ).

5 hours before my early am Tuesday flight, Air Canada CANCELLED my plane; citing “limited staff”.
Next available flight?
THURSDAY.

The Ape is stuck here in New England for another TWO fucking days; a lonely, sad, angry primate; out for Air Canada’s blood.
Stay at home people.
It’s not worth it.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
No 4
2015 Europe MOV Reissue

Starting Sunday off with an extremely underrated STP album.
Although they were pretty much done being a regular touring act due to Scott’s “issues” (I was lucky enough to see them three times), they were still able to make really great studio albums, of which I think No. 4 is the last TRULY great one.

It’s a great balance of early raucous STP (Down) and the more moody textural material (Sour Girl, Atlanta).

PAVEMENT
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
2010 U.S. reissue

No offense to anybody who likes Slanted and Enchanted, but to call that Pavement’s best album when THIS ONE exists is asinine and laughable.
It is a flawless indie rock record from start to finish, and superior to S+E in every way imaginable.
An absolute classic and essential record.

Hey… here’s a quick question.

Ummm…. was THIS really necessary?
And does it really warrant a $40 CAD price tag.

Let’s get a fucking grip on ourselves, people. This is completely out of hand.

Kind of a tough night for your good pal The Vinyl Ape.
An accidental mishap with insulin lead to a very long ordeal which included an ambulance ride and an overnight stay in the hospital.
I have returned home now and am resting.
That was some scary shit.
I’m so very thankful to be alive.
Take care of yourselves and one another.

KRAFTWERK
Autobahn
1975 UK pressing
Embossed cover (Vertigo)

What a find today!
My son asked me if I could take him to the thrift store for a pair of white shoes he could paint for a project, & asked to go to one I hadn’t heard of that he goes to with his friends.

There was a bunch of basic records in there with $3-$5 tags on, but this didn’t have a price tag.
The old ladies didn’t know how much either, so they gave it to me for $3!
Quite the deal!

PIXIES
Surfer Rosa
2004 U.S. Reissue

Looks like I’m having a Pixies weekend at my place.
That’s how it starts.
You throw on one, & then you throw on ALL of em.

There’s nothing left to say about Surfer Rosa. It’s all been said before. An indie masterpiece, & somehow, it sounds better with each passing year.

Instructions For Starting An Indie Rock Band From Scratch:

  1. Meet people
  2. Get instruments
  3. Buy copy of Surfer Rosa
  4. Do what they do
  5. Enjoy

NICK DRAKE
Five Leaves Left
2013 U.S. remastered reissue

My wife and I don’t share very much common ground when it comes to music.
However, Nick Drake is someone we both love and adore, and my wife and I have shared many a wonderful night together with Nick’s music as the backdrop.
Tonight, we have this and a lovely Italian dinner.
This remaster sounds wonderful. Just a wonderful sounding issue of a stunningly gorgeous album.

QUICKSAND
Distant Populations
2021 U.S. pressing

Another sweltering day outside, so I’m throwing heat on heat.
This was my favorite album of 2021, hands down. Superior to Interiors, their reunion record from 2017.
Long one of my favorite bands, I continue to pledge allegiance to the flag of the badass state of Quicksand.
Their album MANIC COMPRESSION was recently reissued, & i ordered it today.
It’s on its way!
Then my Quicksand collection will be complete.

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS
A Flock Of Seagulls
1982 Canada pressing

All these years later… still a fun as hell #80s pop record.

One of my five or so preferred pop albums from that decade. “Space Age Love Song” is an incredible song, and it’s not even what this record is known for.

If there’s any young kids out there reading this, and you’re into #indiepop or straight #synthpop music in general, spend some time with this.
Classic and essential.

Who is an artist for you where, when you hear them, regardless of song, album, whatever…
INSTANTLY makes you cringe and sends you into a fit of rage?

An artist or band where you’d rather slice your own ears off than ever hear them again.

Mine is easy.

What about you guys?

TERENCE TRENT D’ARBY
Terence Trent D'Arby's Neither Fish Nor Flesh: A Soundtrack Of Love, Faith, Hope, And Destruction
1989 U.S. pressing

TTD had a massive ego, & fancied himself the second coming of Prince.
Trust me.
I met him.

The reality always was that he was a cheap dime store poor man’s version of Prince.
Only without the hits.

That being said, his 1st album was pretty decent. It even had a hit.

This one though?
👎
Terrible and pretentious.

Many moons ago, I used to do what I do here on IG.

I used to use Funko figures & pick one that went with the record I was posting.

This was the day Chris Cornell died, May 18, 2017.

That was a terrible day, & it was a sadness I hadn’t felt since 1994.

I just remember arranging them like this, as a bit of my own memorial to a man who had effected my life greatly.

That day reminded me that people who bring solace to millions… have pain of their own.

FUZZ
Fuzz
2013 U.S. pressing

Killer hazy, heavy with Ty Segall playing drums.

A friend bought me this when it came out in ‘13, and it took me a while to click with it. Now, I listen to it multiple times a year, and it’s become a fun album I consistently revisit.

Super goodness, particularly the song “What’s In My Head?”.

BUGGLES
The Age Of Plastic
1980 Canada pressing

Fun on a Sunday morning.

THAT song was (and still is) so big, that nobody ever really talks about how good the album is as a whole. It’s a super-fun slice of innovative & never disappoints whenever I put it on.

Trevor Horn had a magnificent career as a producer post-Buggles, but had this been the only thing he’d ever done, that’s a career enough in itself.
Love this album so much.

THE POSIES
Frosting On The Beater
2018 U.S. 2xLP Reissue

One of the greatest #powerpop albums of the #90s if not all time.

This is one of my Desert Island Discs, and not even Ken Stringfellow’s horrible atrocious behaviour can effect my love for it. There is not one musical misstep, not a single flaw to be found anywhere.
Auer and Stringfellow never reached these heights again. Just one of those lightning in a bottle type albums, but what a bolt it was.

DE LA SOUL

2023 Europe 2xLP Reissue
Yellow Opaque Vinyl

1 of my 3 ALL TIME favorite album. A masterpiece of the genre.

I was in the mood to hear this, & thought I had it in my library, but didn’t.

So I remedied that & grabbed this excellent sounding reissue.
Deep, thumpy, & killer.

We recently lost David Jolicoeur (Plug 2) in ‘23.
When our time is over, we should all be so lucky to have given a gift like this to the world.

SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE
Diary
2017 U.S. 2xLP Ltd. Ed. Reissue

A monster album for me when I was in high school.
Being a total devotee of all things Sub Pop in the , this one hit me in a way that none of the label’s other releases at the time.

I remember buying it on tape, & it taking me at least a week to get past the first 3 songs, because I kept rewinding it after Song For An Angel and playing those 3 over & over.

Amazing album that still holds up.
