Americans wondering how on earth all the Taylor Swift fans got to last week’s concert at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when there’s no sea of car parking next to the stadium:

Lonsdale Street, despite being a major trunk route for buses travelling through the Melbourne CBD, has curbside 2-hour parking on weekends within the designated bus lane along it - and is a loading zone too, apparently. It should be a clearway 24/7, there’s no excuse even if it is paid parking.

Daryl Kerrigan in The Castle (1997) was a NIMBY who loved electricity pylons, which seems logically inconsistent but is actually a quite accurate portrayal of what the average fairly-politically-unengaged person's views are about various contemporary issues.

Clip from The Castle (1997) of Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) watering a plant with a hose and then staring up at an electricity pylon bearing down on his house with a proud look on his face

Getting big Tales From The Loop vibes from this space: a High Voltage DC converter hall using modern modular, multi-Level Voltage Source Converters.

The DDR (East Germany) invented “unbreakable” drinking glasses for catering that were 5 times harder to break than Western glasses of equivalent thickness. The technology didn’t survive re-unification due to it being “uneconomical” - the “Superfest”glasses were more expensive to produce and because they broke less, you would sell fewer of them.

NSW: “the best chance for High Speed Rail in Australia is between Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra”

Also NSW: “lol budget cuts, no fast rail for you”

I swear to god HSR will never get built in this stupid country, we’ll just keep the consultant class fat-and-happy with endless studies and cancel any programme that approaches actually putting shovels in the ground

Bugger the Roman Empire, what men really can't stop thinking about is seminal UK electronic dance-pop band The KLF, AKA the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, the JAMs, the Timelords, The K Foundation, and K2 Plant Hire

pssst... hey kids, wanna buy a Tractor? No, not an actual one, I mean a British Rail Class 37 diesel loco*. Well, UK Government-owned rail freight haulage firm Direct Rail Services is selling their fleet off, after ~60 years of service hauling everything from passenger trains to nuclear fuel flask wagons.
Important note: Locomotive 37069 is part of the listing.

*they've been nicknamed "Tractors" by railfans due to their engine sound

What’s a good gift for someone who’s travelling overseas soon? They’re planning on travelling light, so maybe a decent backpack suited for the purpose? They like photography, so maybe a separate smartphone just for travelling, with a decent camera?
What’s one weird thing you found invaluable when travelling?

These bloody full-height advertising wraps on buses are a bloody menace. Makes the back of the bus feel like a cave. Ban them! Let us see out of the bus!

News of the Sydney “Tekno Train” being run during Vivid reminds me of when in 1976 the Victorian Railways converted a passenger excursion carriage into a “dance car” with a polished floor and a carpeted area for a band to play on, for use on charter trains throughout the state:
