New jumping spider! Sitticus palustris and Naphrys pulex are the closest options in my spider book, but I'm not sure. I often see P. audax and Platycryptus in the house, but these little brown ones stick to the lawn.

Results of peristaltic pump trial: not so good. I think it's worth showing that failure happens. I already have some thoughts about what to do next.
Larger rollers = adequate suction, too much rotary resistance; smaller rollers = inadequate suction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecZAF6eL1OI

A more powerful motor could solve it, but the goal was to use the same as the syringe pump for comparison. My other options are softer tubing that squishes more easily, and ball bearings on all shafts.

WriterOfMinds,
@WriterOfMinds@sigmoid.social avatar

@PKL The existing design does have a front face/lid that would provide that support, but if I put it on, rotational resistance increases greatly due to the shaft binding. A bearing would help with this. I also want to add some small clips or guides to hold the tube down, so it can't escape the rollers and push the lid up.

Iteration 1 assembled. Next up is seeing if it can pump.

@steely_glint What did you have in mind? The current controller is a (rather old) RPi. I have some Python software for streaming video to my desktop, but it's pretty rudimentary. And control is handled locally by OpenCV running on the RPi, since I encountered too much lag if I tried to run control algos on the desktop (a story you're probably familiar with).

WriterOfMinds,
@WriterOfMinds@sigmoid.social avatar

@steely_glint Cool! I will look at that!

One thing I'm noticing is that c++ is not my strong suit. I can get stuff working but the resulting code is more often than not messy and quite ugly.

I don't think I have the guts to publish my keyboard code when I'm finished.

WriterOfMinds,
@WriterOfMinds@sigmoid.social avatar

@symmetrizer Well ... I wrote some C++ for work once, and walked away feeling that the very design of the language is overly cumbersome.

Finally picked up ACE again and started doing some powered motion tests. The mechanisms seem fine, but wow are these motors weak. Gonna see what I can do about that.

Urgent question from my 4 year old:

Hee-haw = bray
Neigh = whinny
Oink = snort
Moo = ???

I told her it's just a moo, but she wasn't satisfied.

It's stupid but I have such a hard time finding a wallet I like. The closest thing yet is some 3d printed one I saw on thingiverse. It should be vegan and small / minimalistic enough to contain more than n number of cards, prefably some reasonable way to keep some coins and new yen paper money but still be small. I also want it to look somewhat nice and not tacticool. Seems impossible to find, I've looked into various variants but nothing I've found is quite right and ticks my boxes.

I have a little mystery for you all. This was in the back of my F&SF issue. Searching "Zorganite Encumber" yields zero hits. "Zorganite" alone turns up a few things, including someone's fiction passion project, but it doesn't seem related.

All I know is, if I have to be in the Zorganite Encumber I'm bringing you all with me.

Image recognition vs Giraffe With No Spots: they're terrible at it?

Is it because the giraffe (born July 31 2023) is too young to have been in their training data?

WriterOfMinds,
@WriterOfMinds@sigmoid.social avatar

@janellecshane I'm actually impressed that they correctly identified this animal as a giraffe based on body shape alone, instead of being fooled by the coat color into going with "colt" or "calf."

@Cuteblooded For starters, hashtags seem to be a bigger deal here than on Twitter. You can follow hashtags for their themed content, or just search them to find people to follow. And if you hashtag your posts by category, people will actually notice.
