@gamingonlinux please don't spread their refund policy. It's mostly just a wish from their end as your local laws might not care about things like playtime or even "refund policies" in the first.

abbe98,

@gamingonlinux I know you are capable of contextualizing news and bringing in more viewpoints, sorry for holding you to such standards.

Feel free to just proxy information intended to rip off consumers.

I have often switched operating systems on my laptops. I don't know how to do that on another one of my computers, viz a Galaxy A22. But the makers of the OS it's currently running are pushing a new version that is too heavy for the hardware in the machine. Planned obsolescence. Is there a firm in Stockholm that will install the smartphone equivalent of on my A22?

abbe98,

@mrundkvist having researched this for a few minutes, it doesn't look like the A22 is supported by any of the Android or Linux derivatives.

Samsung generally makes it really hard to bring their devices out of obsolescence.

SHIFT and Fairphone are brands with a good track record in case you end up needing a new one and don't want to go with a Librem(or frankly a Apple device).

abbe98,

@mrundkvist SHIFT and Fairphone makes Android phones but they don't try to lock their phones down and even shares quite a lot of low-level documentation. As a result the Linux and Android support is rather good and one could expect them to be supported a long time even if the brands stops making phones.

Librem makes phones running Linux by default, the experience is very similar to that of any desktop/laptop when it comes to the ability to just change the Linux distro and OS upgrades.

Here's something we see a lot on ploughed archaeological sites, which are the majority in fertile districts. These dots represent pieces of wrecked 10th century tortoise brooches from burials. Note how they line up with the background ploughing traces, and some form a linear scatter.

abbe98,

@mrundkvist would you say there is a standard distribution of finds delta distance wise form a given site?

Given plow lines I imagine it could be a rather interesting curve.

abbe98,

@mrundkvist ah formen var en dimension jag inte tänkte på. Gissar det är sällan till aldrig en åker blir fyndrik nog för att man ska kunna göra det per fynd-form/typ?

I wonder if the RDF Wikidata dump is generated from the JSON Wikidata dump or if it s generated directly from the Wikidata database. In the case that the RDF Wikidata dump is generated from the JSON dump, what is the tool using from it?

#wikidata #SemanticWeb

abbe98,

@daniel it's not generated from the JSON dump. Both the JSON dump and the various RDF dumps are native implementations of the same "base dumper".

@wikidata @wikidata

abbe98,

@daniel I don't think RML or any of its alternatives would be a good fit as Wikibase's ontology is mostly a "RDF wrapper" around its own concepts.

The little bit of declarative mapping I can think of is actually driven by Wikibase items/properties (things like canonicalUriProperty).

Reading news about phone fraudsters preying on old people. Reminded of this one time when I needed to find out something about land ownership or tenant farming for some archaeological fieldwork. Called a landowner who turned out to be old and confused, and her husband was shouting at her in the background to hang up because I was clearly a phone fraudster.

abbe98,

@mrundkvist honestly, their husband is probably right. There is just so many attack vectors (no matter the subject) when it comes to phone calls that you should only do outgoing calls or preferably not even that.

abbe98, to opensource

Is there any open source projects which has something similar to English Wikipedia's Paid-contribution disclosure policy?

Edent, to bluesky
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

I was very impressed with how easy #BlueSky makes it to claim a domain name handle.

I uploaded a small text file to .well-known and my account is now "@edent.tel"

I'm not convinced that #ATprotocol is brilliant - but Mastodon server providers could learn from the simplicity of getting a personalised domain up and running.

This is a career-defining moment: holding the current issue of the top journal in your discipline, where a study you're first author on is the cover story.

I'm happy, but please know that this does not mean I am home safe as a productive research scholar. I'm still on an associate professor contract with a time limit, and there is no guarantee that my next contract will have any research time in it at all.

@matrix does the ASF CLA transfer copyright or is it similar to that of Qt?

@element but doesn't this situation exist solely because Element took VC money not because it did not have a CLA?

abbe98,

@element why don't you have a similar CLA to that of Qt then? In which contributors only grant you a license not copyright...

Someone on here shared a wikidata.org query the other day that returned a list of organizations with known Mastodon/fediverse handles.

This is all I was able to recover (see screenshot).

Any chance someone has it saved?

I haven't found and alternative to
RPM Fusions deprecated chromium-freeworld for a chromium with proprietary codes.

I have tried the regular chromium package as it was supposed to replace the freeworld one and Ungoogled Chromium Flatpak so far.

abbe98,

I think the Ungoogled Chromium Flatpak actually did work codes wise but it seemed to break other APIs.

abbe98,

@nemobis I assume it's a proprietary codec that fail but I have yet to see it result in a logged error.

Looks like it could be: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2224141

Archasa, to Archaeology

The Swedish Rock Art Research Archive (SHFA) has launched a new digital platform for their collection. The database includes more than 24,000 digitized images. Apart from the digitalised archival materials, there are high resolution images (), laser scans, 3D etc available as CC-BY-ND.

At the moment only the Swedish sites have been imported, more content to follow.
@archaeodons

abbe98,

@Archasa Lovely to finally see this! Especially the license change for images.

Sadly they actually only provide compressed low resolution images, a little odd given the IIIF support.

Sverige joined Österreich, France, and Italia in ruling use of Google Analytics violates GDPR.

I am proud of Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY) for the ruling and being the first regulatory agency to issue fines and conclusively rule that Google’s “supplementary measures” for EU businesses are inadequate.

Thank you, @noybeu, for the legal activism strengthening GDPR as an effective consumer protection.

https://noyb.eu/en/noyb-win-first-major-fine-eu-1-million-using-google-analytics

abbe98,

@Jeremiah

> the ordered remediation is the removal of Google Analytics

The decisions state that they should stop using the version of GA they used several years ago(it should probably be read as implementation given the motivation).

> data transfer to the US was the deciding factor and there is no way to use Google Analytics without transferring data to the US

The decision state that the transfer of PII data was the deciding factor not data in general.

abbe98,

@Jeremiah

One is totally allowed to use GA as long as one strips PII before it reaches Googles servers like one can do very easily with GA 4.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to actually use Google Analytics, or analytics from any ad company, for that matter but @noybeu's reporting is dishonest.
