People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

abosio,
@abosio@fosstodon.org avatar

@clive sorry not related to concerns, but I have been surprised/delighted at the noticeable surge in popularity of e-bikes in suburban South Florida and the diversity (age, apparent demographics) of both the hardware and the riders.

I'd rather have microphone priority on macOS (the way wifi network priority list used to be, before system settings got ruined) rather than simply remembering the last chosen. When take my MBP away from my desk, my Yeti stays and I use my AirPods mic if needed. But when I'm at my desk and the Yeti is plugged in, I want the it to always be used.

This morning I wrote a #bash alias that switches into a repository directory, checks out the main branch, opens #macos Finder windows for two subdirectories, launches a new #firefox Nightly window, waits a second, and then opens four URLs as tabs of that new window, so yeeeeaaaahhhh, I guess you could say the day is going pretty good so far. #unix #script #nerd #hashtag

@Meyerweb Congrats! Now what were you supposed to be doing? 😁

I didn’t have any eclipse-viewing glasses

So I’m doing this old-school

Modified cardboard box built out of crap lying around my house

Poke a tiny hole in one end, tape some paper for a viewing screen on other, and …

… voila, a camera obscura

I use something like this seven or eight years ago to see an eclipse, it worked really well

A man’s hand holding up a cardboard cube, with the edges tape together using masking tape, completely closed except for a 3 inch strip near the bottom of one edge. Inside that open space you can see the edge of a piece of white paper taped to the inner surface of one side of the cube

abosio,
@abosio@fosstodon.org avatar

@clive I also did not get glasses. Maybe next time. 😏 I still had my 2017 camera obscura (formerly a shoe box) in the top of my closet.

I’m not ready to dive into this. But it’s pretty interesting for a private cloud OS:

@mkennedy I had my eye on CasaOS. I guess I’ll need to do a comparison.

abosio,
@abosio@fosstodon.org avatar

@mkennedy Yep. I was going to try it on a RPi5 as a fun experiment mostly. I want to run some alternative to Google docs and Jellyfin, so I’ll probably have USB storage too, but I’m putting the OS on a M2 NVME SSD with a PCIe hat for the pi.

@niqwithq talks about segregating your email and not publishing your personal email where possible. One email address ain't gonna cut it these days.

@kev Doesn’t using the catch-all lead to - one way or another - having to deal with all the spam sent to addresses you’ve never even created: bob@, jenny@, root@ and on and on?

@elaterite I wonder if these could be matched up with a city based on the style. Where were they destined to go or came from?

@elaterite Ah, I skimmed but missed that. I wonder if Chicago had underground stations? Maybe it wasn’t always an elevated train.

Life hack: when an open WiFi (or maybe a website) demands your email address for access, go into your spam folder and grab an email address in the From field. Worked for me so far.

Every Mastodon UI has a terrible UI and patterns for private messages. That it's so easy to accidentally post a private message publicly is unfortunate.

abosio,
@abosio@fosstodon.org avatar

@danielfeldroy Private messages are not really private yet. No e2e encryption. The instance admins can see them. So it’s best to pretend they don’t exist and use something else for private messages.

Yay, I received my Raspberry Pi 5! Original shipping estimate was back in October. I ordered this one without a plan for it because last time I waited to buy a 4 and they became very hard to get.

What should I do with it?

I'm still trying to decide on a good use for the Pi 5. Pihole might be my default if I cannot think of anything else. Got ideas? (see my profile for what I'm into)

abosio,
@abosio@fosstodon.org avatar

@tom_webb That’s impressive. I had kinda ruled docker stuff out because I didn’t think 8GB would be enough. I think casaOS might be the winner.

Got tailscale working on the Mac mini today in attempt No. 2. No big deal. But if you want it running as a service I'd avoid Homebrew and install the open source version mentioned in the docs: https://tailscale.com/kb/1065/macos-variants
