One of the most frustrating things in life is that – like a great many people, I suspect – I have a few areas of interest in which I’ve developed enough of a competence that I feel I could probably make a meaningful contribution to their future development, but which are fated to remain secondary because I simply do not have time to attend to them, and also do the work to which I’m centrally committed.

I’ve been expecting this for quite some time now – this and Florida, actually. This is the harbinger of a more complete abandonment: in practical terms, uninsurable means undevelopable. I expect this to cascade as well. https://www.ocregister.com/2023/05/26/state-farm-says-no-new-property-insurance-clients-in-california/

It’s great that the Guardian wants to talk about the semiotics of type, but this is just typographically illiterate. (Reading “These sleeker typefaces, like Arial and Helvetica, are closely related to modernity and the internet” makes me want to cease to exist, in much the same way as a wall text I read last week at the Barbican’s Alice Neel show, which described Neel’s work as commenting on the “beatnik community” of 1931 Greenwich Village.) https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/may/16/neutraface-font-gentrification

Also I don’t think I ever realized just how infrequently Survival Research Laboratories had mounted full-on performances, making me gladder than ever that I managed to catch their ‘88 show in the parking lot of Shea Stadium, “The Misfortunes of Desire (Acted Out at an Imaginary Location Symbolizing Everything Worth Having).” https://www.nytimes.com/1988/05/17/arts/monster-robots-bash-paradise-in-mock-battle.html

Shoutout to Valerie at the Apple Store in SoHo, who dug a few cc’s of indescribably vile compacted pocket-crud out of the charging port of my phone, in a process every bit as mortifyingly intimate as having your teeth scaled, with all the same overtones of abjection and shame. For the price of a few minutes’ embarrassment, my phone charges again!

Ahh, some of you heads asked for the full quote from "Invisible Cities," which is so apropos to our moment it hurts: “And Polo said: 'The inferno of the living is not something that will be; if there is one, it is what is already here, the inferno where we live every day, that we form by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it. The first is easy for many: accept the inferno and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it...

UGH the Children’s Health Defense/RFK Jr. people have just reached out to me, asking if I’d be interested to serve as an “expert on smart cities.” It’s the exact same vibe I got when approached by the Spiked!/Battle of Ideas Festival lunatics and the similarly conspiracist “Architects for Social Housing” guy: I feel soiled that they’d think of me as someone sympathetic to their worldviews. What am I doing wrong?

I haven’t played with in awhile, but after struggling to find the information I was looking for on Google, I figured I’d give it a shot at answering the question: Who was the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albany Division on March 4th, 1968? Simple historical question, right? I gave it three tries. On the first I got a superficially very plausible answer (“John J. Malone”), which sadly turned out to be a hallucination. Then I asked for historical lists: total confabulations.

Here’s a sneak preview of the book, BTW – this here’s a passage about , from Section 3 on “Collective Power.” The sentence structure here could still use a tweak or two, but in general I’m not displeased with the way it reads.

Can I just say again how brilliant the Merlin ID app is? It’s one of the few legitimate applications of “AI.” In just the last week alone, it’s tagged House Sparrow, European Robin, European Starling, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Eurasian Magpie, Eurasian Coot, Eurasian Blackbird, Eurasian Blackcap, Common Chiffchaff, Eurasian Wren, Common Wood-Pigeon, Common Swift and Carrion Crow calls from my kitchen window. which is everyday-magical. The hypocrisy stinks to high heaven: Bill Ackman destroyed Claudine Gay’s career (ostensibly) due to her (alleged) plagiarism…yet Ackman’s own wife Neri Oxman has committed acts of plagiarism at least as egregious and extensive. https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-ackman-wife-neri-oxman-mit-dissertation-plagiarism-2024-1

The other thing nothing can prepare you for about times of horror is that ordinary life keeps going for some, and maybe even for you. In one tab on your browser there is genocide and atrocity, the next an article about the best restaurants in Philadelphia right now, or a silly meme someone's sent you that you can't help giggling at. The affective shear is tidal, and can keep you from readily finding your feet, even when it doesn't tear you apart in and of itself.

How much do you want to bet that vile Michelle Mone’s criticism of the equally vile Rishi Sunak, however well deserved, is primarily founded in her documented, public racism?

Announcing the Liberation Studies Collective: a regular, shared, silent meditation practice for folks with liberatory politics, however you interpret that.

While founded in a Buddhist ontology, epistemology and ethics, there is no religious or “spiritual” content in these sessions – they consist merely of brief, practical guidance, followed by an opportunity to be still and present for 40 minutes.

Session times TBA shortly. I hope you’ll join me.

Look, there’s not a whole lot of bad shit you could accuse Israel of that I would even blink at, but please, please check all your sources before repeating or reposting claims that Israel has been harvesting organs from dead Palestinians for resale on the black market. I see a lot of my friends in the struggle reposting these stories, and they are invariably sourced very thinly, with reference to the same two or three original posts, in a way that doesn’t satisfy my standard for veracity.

I appreciated the forthrightness of these wastebins on ASU campus, but given what we know about the recycling industry, the options should probably be labeled LANDFILL HERE and LANDFILL SOMEWHERE ELSE ON EARTH, AT A HIGHER CARBON COST.

Just popping up to share that we now have confirmed dates for the West Coast leg of my Lifehouse tour! It would make me beyond happy to see you on August 1st at Elliott Bay in Seattle (w/Dean Spade!),
August 3rd at Page Against the Machine in Long Beach,
August 6th at Green Apple’s 9th Ave store in San Francisco, or August 8 at Powell's in Portland – and hopefully break bread with you afterward. Feel free to share with anyone you think might be interested!
