Excited about our upcoming @emeraldseu : Navigating AI's Ethical Aspects

It's a big topic to tackle.

When? 28 March 11:00 CET
Where? https://emeralds-horizon.eu/events/emeralds-webinar-navigating-ais-ethical-aspects

@underdarkGIS on the data side, there's this from a few years ago: https://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-29-good-data/

*disclaimer, I'm a co author on chapter 2. The whole book is worth reading.

The essay linked here also. I need to spend more time reading it properly: https://scicomm.xyz/@dhobern/112097667856736962

...there's also quite some reading around the environmental and social impacts of data center proliferation, I don't have any ready links though.

Why yes, I am totally in sales / self boosting mode - with about two shifts this month, a couple of leads but nothing solid yet and a firehose of job applications in the wind, 2024 is repeating on 2023's holy crap level precarity - except we really don't want to live out of our car again and would love to keep paying the rent.

Really great (absolutely terrifying) research by plasma physicist @carlysagan is being highlighted today on https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=02&month=02&year=2024

Is there anything that tens of thousands of disposable satellites won't completely fuck up?

Satellite companies need to stop launching until they fund research on the upper atmosphere and magnetosphere(!) and show their plans are safe (which...is probably impossible since they aren't safe).

adamsteer,
@adamsteer@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets @carlysagan ...but how will we Instagram from Antarctica or the North Pole?

Yes, it's nuts. Thanks for posting and highlighting this!

I don't mind "wasting" my time on things I enjoy: a walk; random Internet surfing; playing the one or other mobile game; staring at the wall, dreaming.

I'm annoyed when I lose time because my brain does not cooperate and instead runs in circles or because I miss a train or a bus - but I can bear it.

But gosh, do I deeply RESENT it when people waste my time by badly organized meetings: I am SO angry and SO furious.

adamsteer,
@adamsteer@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg heavy plus. And then meetings where everyone tries to out talk each other, and meetings which are about the last meeting you had where you thought it was resolved. And all the other things in replies like meetings to Show How Important I Am.

Don't worry it ain't just in science ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Honestly, it drives me crazy. What's so hard about agenda, topic moderation, timekeeping, limiting talk time, one speaker one topic at a time, solicit input from those who haven't spoken, chair rotation?

adamsteer,
@adamsteer@mastodon.social avatar

@saarmuller far north is no shining example (beyond the Arctic circle). I learned great meetingcraft in Australia, however it's a real mixed bag here: usually depends on the size of egos present, and the chair is not necessarily respected.

How often do you get forced to use a ridiculous ticket system when the problem could have been solved with a simple email? ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆhttps://frankwiles.social/@frank/111857605390834281

@jimbob oh I had a classic recently..

Me to admin person who is notorious for work shedding: can you update my email address in [system you are admin of]
Admin person: no you have follow instructions from [system help desk]
Me: follows instructions
System help desk: a person with admin rights needs to do this...

@adamsteer@mastodon.social avatar

Hi hive mind, where can get funding to investigate snow/fire in Australia?

Open to collaborations with existing research groups / CRCs / universities / NGOs

...or straight up commercial arrangements

...or other grants (eg adventure grants, other private sources...)

It may end up being super useful to hydrology and fire and ecology and alpine resort/recreation communities...

Part of unpacking stuff stored since 2019 is finding old notebooks filled with things that ...

... just look foreign. Like.. how was I ever smart enough to do or think that?

Here's the bones of a system for building a flexible raster tiler based on gdal2tiles.py and a system to run it on Amazon Web Services with no local storage, purely s3-s3 and processing in memory.

....the what now? How?

Hi Bendigo! We live here now.

...ending 9 months of nomad life for me and 14 months for the family! the car is fully unpacked for the first time since Sept. 2022.

If you're around and want to climb rocks, bike, trail run, ski, canoe, talk mapping, open geostuff, open data, snow science, climate and home schooling- shout out :)

Looking forward to not thinking about "where are we next week" for a while...

I really need someone... well a lot of people ... right now to convince me that a PhD and a lot of life work to become a geospatial expert with a specialist bent on airborne mapping and data wrangling using open source tooling wasn't a complete waste of time...

adamsteer,
@adamsteer@mastodon.social avatar

@vickyveritas on paper maybe, my hundreds of job rejections, nrar complete abandonment by whatever the geospatial community is, and workplaces saying "we don't care about any of it we choose to mainsplain you instead" says otherwise...

Can we, as an earth systems community, stop calling recent sea ice loss around Antarctica astonishing/incredible/surprising?

It is not a surprise, or astonishing to anyone who's been paying attention. It has been brewing for decades. This scale of event is exactly what earth systems researchers have been talking about for a long time. And why it's been incredibly frustrating to watch our one planet be treated so poorly by us as a society.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™

File under revolutionary thoughts that should not be revolutionary in this year of 2023:

Conferences are gatherings of the most privileged minds, rather than the best minds.

Every geo/GIS job in Australia is an ESRI job.

If you want to avoid capture of an entire sector and de-risk your stuff, not to mention save buckets of ongoing $$ just to use software, get in touch.

I can design an open source / open data strategy - field data collection, drone mapping, data infrastructure. And because of standards it will still talk ESRI if you really want it to.

Example from 2020 here: https://figshare.com/articles/preprint/ASDC_-

Any form of getting to places where you can no longer see human made things is so good for our souls/minds.

Who cares about mars. If we want to expand ourselves spend the billions making uncurated spaces accessible.

We don't even have to go far. Inner city /suburban reserves where forest is let to be itself, buildings can't be seen, noise is reduced
