"The richest 0.1% in Britain emit 22 times more from transport than low earners, and 12 times more than average. The data finds that income is directly linked to levels of mobility, with people who earn more than £100,000 travelling on average at least double the distance each year compared with those on incomes under £30,000."
“The UK and Ireland face a wetter, damper and mouldier future due to #climatechange Until the world reduces emissions to net zero, the climate will continue to warm, and rainfall in the UK and Ireland will continue to get heavier.”
"Just use Linux" is much like "just ride a bike" or "just shop at a refill store" - accessing the non default option can be time consuming, expensive or unavailable locally. We need to recognise you need a certain degree of privilege to have the capacity to complicate your life voluntarily. We need to be trying to make the better, harder thing more accessible, not blaming people for not using it.
@afewbugs
People have been working on making Linux more available for decades now. It's at the stage where it's probably more intuitive, more usable and more friendly than Windows ever was.
Yes, it's different, and thus requires investment in familiarizing yourself with a different os, but it's no worse than going, say, from win10 to win11.
@Mux@hazelnot@afewbugs I teach tech, mostly to folks who tend to be older and less confident. The most common response to this proposal tends to be around the fact that, ironically, they trust big tech companies more, even if they hate them; if it's free - many assume - then it must also be worthless. They struggle on with a clunkier, more confusing Windows operating system because of this, when they could be using an OS more comparable to the one many of them use on their phone (essentially a free, open source OS with a simple software centre). I agree that we cannot underestimate the mass marketing of Microsoft that promotes their inferior product. I remember mentioning this challenge to folks who work on Linux, who told me "We don't have time or money to do publicity, we're busy working on creating a better OS." There's the rub!
@afewbugs i carry a katadyne befree water bottle when travelling. Works great and gives me reassurance about not needing to worry too much about water sources. Before that I used a Sawyer Mini.
@afewbugs@SaintlySin I am so sorry to hear that. I remember sitting in my "How to live with diabetes" course pre-Brexit vote and someone asked the lead endocrinologist "do you think there will be shortages" and he said "I can't predict the future". I pointed out that there was no England-based pharmaceutical company manufacturing insulin, so... I was then accused by another course taker of 'fearmongering'.
I have never been so sad to have an "I told you so" in my pocket.
#Exeter#Pride today, and one of the many things I love about Pride (and indeed Halloween) is how it makes the quotidian just a little bit creatively weird. Just saw three extremely fabulous drag queens, all corsets and sparkles with hair as tall as their heels doing some extremely mundane shopping in Boots.
This is why Pride is so important isn't it, a critical mass of safe people people in one place at the same time so we outnumber those who might threaten people for being themselves. I wish those three could buy hand sanitiser dressed like that every day if they wanted to (though I'd imagine going about your everyday errands like that would be murder on the ankles)
We're having an internal discussion in @SocialCoop at the moment about whether to disable images and replace them with alt text for World Accessibility day, as per this post:https://social.coop/@stefan@stefanbohacek.online/112275638101628439. The outcome seems to be leaning to no for technical reasons, but I've been fascinated to see how many are giving the suggestion that it's performative as a reason to disagree.
For people concerned about the proposed #asylumSeeker roundup in preparation for deportation to #Rwanda there's a list of local #AntiRaids groups here:
