forecast: " The atmospheric set up
for the latter half of next week also looks to have similarities
to the conditions on July 28, 1995 that led to Phoenix reaching
121 degrees and Yuma hit 124 degrees. ...this should go down as one of the longest, if not the longest duration heat wave this area has ever seen. In fact, both the GEFS and EPS do not show an end to this heat wave as it goes through the entire 360 hour run. "

playing around with other social apps (not threads) and i still keep coming back here to mastodon. i think it's the complete lack of instant gratification, lol. like, the others are zingy-flavor-dusted potato chips and this is a potato. 😂

ai6yr,

@elenaperez Must be part of it.

Interesting to me to see how some folks on the Birdsite who were unwilling to try out Mastodon are eagerly jumping on Threads, because (not in spite of) it being part of Facebook and being corporate owned. I guess a lot of people make their decisions based on "brands" and being part of the crowd--even if that brand is known for vacuuming up and selling your personal information. 🤔

ai6yr,

@colo_lee Indeed...

ai6yr,

@rpmik @dsacer Yep... illustrative of this is bottled water. You can literally buy bottled water which is municipal tap water and sell it for a markup to the consumers that tap water who could just turn on the tap.

ai6yr,

@mappingsupport Hmm, what temperature do airplanes stop flying in Phoenix?

ai6yr,

@mappingsupport Air density issues... looks like regional jets cannot takeoff if temperatures are above 118F. https://www.tripsavvy.com/planes-at-phoenix-sky-harbor-airport-2682513

What a shock. Threads is already censoring people and information.

ai6yr,

@ki6bty Hmm, wouldn't let you post sexy ham radio photos, eh? 😂

Waiting for a new queen. We're attempting to generate a new queen in this nuc, with brood pulled from a commercial Italian queen. Hoping she mates with local feral bees for better production.

ai6yr,

The source Italian queen was "rescued" via double queening (we combined her hive with a feral swarm). She had stopped laying after winter, bees were not foraging, despite good weather and forage--and feral hives taking off. No idea why. About to die off. After the double queening, she has been laying and producing, the hive is now pulling in honey. Our feral hives do MUCH better, but can be "spicier"... fine on a ranch, not in someone's backyard.

ai6yr,

Our hope (in theory, not yet proven in practice) is that the new queen, if successful, will end up laying hybridized brood, and hopefully will exhibit the better performance of local bees, with gentler handling and behavior.

Yay, now 7 people with locally acquired in the United States. Love this CDC statement: "Despite these cases, the risk of locally acquired malaria remains extremely low in the United States" https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/07/us-malaria-risk-low-despite-local-cases-what-you-need-to-know.html

    ai6yr,

Personally, probably just to avoid the "reassurance" and tell people how to avoid malaria, IMHO. Their 2020 "risk... to the American public at large remains low at this time" proved to be an extraordinarily bad assessment. https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/p0121-novel-coronavirus-travel-case.html

Press Release dated January 21, 2020

    ai6yr,

@TinaDybvik Yep, interesting... wonder where the local reservoir of malaria is now. Wildlife?

This is a terrible time for cuts to childhood vaccination programs or to Public Health in general.
