@jevidl @firefly @ai6yr I just got an email from a reporter about this piece!!

michael_w_busch,
@michael_w_busch@mastodon.online avatar

@firefly @ai6yr @sundogplanets @sarahtaber We have identification from Jonathan McDowell ( @planet4589 ):

"This definitely looks consistent with being a bit of the Crew-7 Dragon's trunk which reentered on a path right over this location on Tuesday" - https://twitter.com/planet4589/status/1794047212332208453

Someone should check the fields along a line from west to north of Asheville.

And SpaceX really is littering a lot.

sundogplanets,
@sundogplanets@mastodon.social avatar

@amyedge The US government is responsible! The treaties that govern this only apply to nations. It's really freaking weird, and needs to be updated like 20 years ago.

sundogplanets,
@sundogplanets@mastodon.social avatar

@michael_w_busch @firefly @ai6yr @sarahtaber @planet4589 I just emailed Jonathan to see if he had been contacted, but clearly I'm a little late to the party (...the space debris party. The worst kind of party).

@sarahtaber in case you are interested in talking about strategies for protecting rural farmland from space debris dumps, let me know! I'm working on this from the Saskatchewan/Canadian gov't side now (with very little headway so far)

michael_w_busch,
@michael_w_busch@mastodon.online avatar

@amyedge @sundogplanets @firefly @ai6yr @sarahtaber This was not a targeted re-entry: SpaceX just let the Crew Dragon trunk section fall out of the sky somewhere between Mississippi and Pennsylvania.

I note that the predicted ground track happened to pass very close to the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia - although the spacecraft did not get that far.

(The prediction was over the line in Tennessee, but Asheville is close enough to be within the cross-track uncertainty).

Note to self: do not light up a smoke when you have a leaky propane tank in your car. 😬 https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/car-explodes-in-van-nuys-parking-lot/

One more very good reason not to smoke. 🚬

ai6yr, to food

Well, let's try boiling the nopal today versus just eating it raw or quickly cooked...

gettingcomputey,
@gettingcomputey@beige.party avatar

@ai6yr My Mom keeps trying to get me to love nopales, and I've had them like twice where they were bomb, getting rid of the gooey for sure is part of what did that. Mexican friends eat it way more often and I wish it was more part of the staple diet here from being known. We stay out here watering water intensive crops, like almonds, in a desert. This here makes sense.

ai6yr,

The main advantage of boiling seems to be:

  1. Tenderizes older/larger cactus pads.
  2. Removes some of the "sliminess", if you are not a fan of it (I like it, myself).

I will likely continue to quick cook mine, EXCEPT when I have older, tougher nopal I want to cook, where the boiling breaks down the toughness.

Tip: Scramble the eggs separately, adding the eggs to this, the eggs bind to the liquids and makes cactus-tomato-egg-drop-soup, LOL. Which is fine, but not what I was aiming for.

meganL,
@meganL@mas.to avatar

@gettingcomputey @ai6yr It is frustrating how much that canard has gotten around. Almonds are not intrinsically super-thirsty.

Most of the areas in CA people call "desert" are chaparral ecosystems.

And there's actual lettuce & alfalfa being irrigated in actual desert, yet people have been sic'd on almonds. https://mastodon.social/@glightly/111803468041036161

Video of climbers stranded on Everest after collapse of a ridge -- ABOVE the Hillary Step--ps. above the "death zone" (Update: seems like this is a bit of media hype, looks like 2 dead, 3 missing, but the rest made it off on an alternate route -- I should have seen that with the original Sky News link) https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mount-everest-2-climbers-die-kenyan-nepali-3-missing/

Climbing Mount Everest seems like a Vanity project.
I know Nepal likes the money, but how many dead bodies and garbage left on top of the world is enough for them to say enough?

18+ ai6yr,

Hmm, it looks like it's going to be a very bad week for Everest. Looking for the latest on this, see there are already a bunch of deaths. Here's a Kenyan Climber reported dead yesterday (before the collapse)

@ai6yr This is the way. Everything on the network is blocked by default. My stuff is grouped to also block all Meta stuff, another group allows ads for a few devices that need them. Also get a nice app (iOS here, but others or web app I’m sure) to easily poke the api to temporarily disable blocking for troubleshooting- mine offers 1min and 5min.

Outbreak of Human Trichinellosis — Arizona, Minnesota, and South Dakota, 2022

"Among eight persons who shared a meal that included the meat of a black bear harvested in Canada and frozen for 45 days, six trichinellosis cases were identified. The meat was grilled with vegetables and served rare; two cases occurred in persons who ate only the vegetables. Motile freeze-resistant Trichinella nativa larvae were identified in remaining meat frozen for >15 weeks."

ai6yr,

Note to self: DO NOT EAT THE BEAR KABOBS

"Six days before symptom onset in the index patient, he and eight extended family members from three states (Arizona, Minnesota, and South Dakota) had gathered for several days in South Dakota and shared a meal that included kabobs made from the meat of a black bear (Ursus americanus), which had been harvested by one of the family members in northern Saskatchewan, Canada in May 2022. This article on makes me think that I want not to work for any organization that uses it.

If well-informed self-respecting potential applicants turn away from prospective employers because of such an impediment, might this self-selection also decrease the average quality of candidates for those organizations?

If--as an applicant--I happen to see that yellow arch over the W frowning at me, I'll surely know to turn away, not just because I'll know that applying to the organization sucks, but because working for the organization will suck too.

Cory Doctorow ( @pluralistic ) receives a nice mention.
