I am gonna do it. I am wiping my PC again and going from dual boot (Windows / Linux) to only Linux.

Reason: I discovered that Gaming on Linux is just as good as on Windows, in parts smoother. This was kept well hidden for me for some decades.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@chris To be fair, Linux being good for gaming is a relatively new development. But the nice thing is is that it's still improving very rapidly.

So, now the lead candidate of the to the is using "" as an insult. Can't right wing politicians spend a week without saying anything fascist?

@jmcs

Remove the word "German" and the answer would still be no.

@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

So, the now has selected a prime minister for its new fashy govt. The new PM is not part of any party, and headed up the intelligence agency and the anti-terrorist agency. That doesn't sound foreboding at all...

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

In totally unrelated news, I just did a practice German citizenship test.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

Well, that was easy, if that test was realistic, I would pass it without a second thought.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@thatmanmatt yeah it was.

@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@jmcs I've never been much of a memorisation type tbh...

@Raffo Bureaucracy? In Germany? Well, I never...

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@Raffo NL is pretty efficient, but let's just say trying to get citizenship there is going to get a lot less fun there soon, especially if you aren't white.

I'm getting that incredulous feeling I had in 2016 about Mr. Trump. "Why should I even think about this guy? He has no chance."

But, memory quickly checks such impulses. He's trying to get a bit of counterculture to rub off on him. I think I get it now, these recent appearances are about becoming an outsider again.

And outsider who is 'billionaire' former president at the head of a major party. Oh yeah. An outsider. Let's not play in to that one again OK?

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@futurebird Sadly, right now I'll be surprised if Biden wins.

Here lies Irony, she was not well for many years, but after a valiant fight she is dead.

This would be ironic for any of the speakers at this event... but none more so than this man.

That people were hauled off by security for heckling him? Well irony would have had something to say about that, but as I explained, she is dead. RIP.

They do have a history of hijacking great terms.

The US left sucks for letting the right define the language so often...

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@itty53 @hazelnot @futurebird

Fair point, but I don't fully agree, they defined anti-abortionist to be "pro-life" and the left just... accepted it.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@futurebird @itty53 @hazelnot

Good point, and that there's no mainstream left party in the states made it that there was nobody to really shout it down.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@futurebird @itty53 @hazelnot the left also doesn't own a political party, it would be amazing if there was an actual left choice in the states instead of extreme right, and centre right.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@futurebird @itty53 @hazelnot

Oh, I'm cheering on the left there, but I'm also cynical enough to believe that some drastic change needs to happen if the US ever wants their overton window to shift left. I'm hoping for y'all it will happen as having the US become less right would be great everywhere, considering the influence the US has.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@itty53 @futurebird @hazelnot

I'd say a FPTP two party system is broken by design, and that if you could talk the dems into some actual electoral reform, it would be amazing.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@Extra_Special_Carbon @futurebird @itty53 @hazelnot

I will never tell anyone not to vote, and I will always vote myself, but do you really think that voting will change how things are now? Why would either the Dems or the Reps want to change a system that locks out most of the competition?

Maybe I'm wrong, but most systems are designed to perpetuate themselves.

My fear is more that we're seeing a repeat of Weimar Germany, where progressiveness peaked right before the rise of the Nazis.

Sure, the Nazis fell, but we all know how much that took.

If you're interested in trying #Linux, feel free to ask me any questions about it. I've been on it since the late 90s, so there's a decent chance I can answer your questions.

@theresmiling I've heard good stuff about Mint. And enjoy your vacation!

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@zeroday @theresmiling

These days, most distributions are pretty easy. I personally prefer Fedora for having a nice release cadence while not doing whatever Ubuntu is doing lately, but I wouldn't recommend it for someones first just because it leaves off some proprietary things out of legal caution.

Sure, it's not hard to add, but it's an annoyance I wouldn't like to bother new users with.

The point of solar panels is not to ensure "solar profitability," but to make for a greener, better world. Its profitability is only justified insofar as it moves us towards that goal. If we want to switch to renewables, then sometimes we're going to have surplus, because of how renewables work. This is well known and discussed ad nauseam. If that makes power markets unstable, then the problem is with markets, not with there being too many solar panels.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@theluddite

A lot of the "problems" we have now are only problems because of profit motives.

Not linking directly because I don't want to shit on projects I believe are genuinely trying to make the web better, but every time I see a post about "the small web" or a more "humane" web or whatever that includes phrases like this about content: "created without the motivation of financial gain" I sigh so deeply lol

I am begging ethical web enthusiasts to understand what an extreme privilege it is to spend time working on something without worrying about money

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@sue

I've personally been thinking about how tech would function in a mutual aid system. But of course that's an idealistic thought, one that wouldn't work in our current reality.

But outside of that, as someone who grew up poor and still fears falling back to that despite doing decently well, I totally understand your point.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@benroyce @Uair

"you need to kill capitalism on its own turf"

I half agree with your point that you can't defeat capitalism while weak, but you can also not defeat capitalism on its own turf. We need to amass enough power to change the rules, to disassemble the power structure the rich have right now.

You can't out-capitalism capitalists without becoming one yourself. We need to change the game.

ainmosni,
@ainmosni@berlin.social avatar

@benroyce @Uair

Money is only an abstraction of power. If we really want to change the game, we need to make their money powerless.

Commerce/trade will always exist, but it won't be the way to get out of this mess, especially considering that putting an oversized value on those things has been a cornerstone of the mess we're in now.
