If you wanted to explain to a 10 year old how a button or switch can change between two things, like AM or FM on a radio, but didn't want to use a radio because it may be outdated... what example might you use?

akamatchstic,

@rasterweb bit of a stretch, but maybe hot or cold on a electric shower

Trying to get Home automation to check the power state of a lamp and send a notification if it's on. "Get Desk Power State" outputs "Yes" when running the action through Shortcuts and testing the automation in the Home app but the action outputs "No" when the automation is run in the background at a time of day. Does anyone know why that is and know of a workaround?

akamatchstic,
@akamatchstic@mastodon.online avatar

@simonbs I’ve had stuff like this happen when the device is trying to reconnect to network after waking for the automation. Might be worth popping in a wait at the start of the shortcut, about 5s or so

Gotta love when companies are surprised by Apple and paint them as the bad guy when literally anyone who knows Apple could have predicted this https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/8/23994089/apple-beeper-mini-android-blocked-imessage-app

akamatchstic,

@rileytestut it’s almost like we both went through this exact same scenario a few years ago with Apple and authentication 🤔

akamatchstic,
@akamatchstic@mastodon.online avatar

@rileytestut funny story, the guy behind Beeper reached out a few years ago with this exact product as the thing to reverse engineer and build. Cool to see it materialise, but even then I was thinking it would be another cat and mouse game

It’s a tough call whether I like the textured or smooth better…

akamatchstic,

@rasterweb definitely a question of what the part is used for imo. The textured does hide the first layer lines exceptionally well!

I’m looking to an articulated 3D model.

Background: I’m a trustee at Marley’s Ferret Rescue and Rehoming (https://www.marleysferretrescue.co.uk) and we’re setting up an online charity merch store to become self-sufficient. We rely on donations, and are barely scraping by.

One of the items we want to sell is a “fidget ferret” - an articulated ferret similar to the photo on this post!

I’ve tried designing it myself, and have run into the limits of my CAD design abilities 😂

malwaretech, to random

The main thing that makes me curious about alternate economic systems is facts like a top 5% salary in the UK being £80k/year. Statistically that makes you 'rich', but it just.... doesn't. Rich is Lamborghinis and yachts, £80k pre-tax is maybe being able to afford a house in whichever major city you have to live for work and having a rainy day fund. I hate that we all just accept that having even moderate financial stability is to have made it, when in reality homeownership and not retiring below the poverty line should be the literal bare minimum that everyone deserves.

akamatchstic,
@akamatchstic@mastodon.online avatar

@malwaretech it’s bonkers too when a lot of jobs available only pay up to 30K - no rainy day fund, and a hell of a lot of sacrifices to make to get by. If you try to get out the rat race to do your own thing, fat chance without having a safety net.

Something is gonna have to change, and soon.

Welcome to part 7 of the series on How to Fix a Hole in the Shed Floor. In this episode, we fix the hole in the floor with a golden screw -- ok it was a brown deck screw, but you get the idea!

In between the heat and rain this week I managed to get the deck and ramp framed, taped, and covered with the decking. Soon it will be time for the shed, but that should not take long at all as it’s a metal one, but for now, I think I am done with the woodwork.

The decking has been installed and screwed down on the porch and ramp for the shed. The "golden screw" was the one on the ramp, 2nd board from the top. upper edge. :)

akamatchstic,
@akamatchstic@mastodon.online avatar

@AnEntropyBubble been watching you build this, great work! Is there enough grip on the ramp for rainy conditions?

@ChrisPirillo ugh yep.

“Where do you get your protein?”

“Are you ALLOWED to eat this?”

Thankfully most of my family have gotten past this and it’s just once or twice a year now with strangers.

Either way, it tends be a great way to open up some education chats and perhaps planting a seed about the idea of veganism

Anyone think this is a bad way of doing ads in-app?

I’m using AdMob banner ads to minimise intrusiveness, and have turned off personalised targeting + analytics (no need for that thank you).

There’s also a way to remove ads entirely, which also unlocks a few app customisation options as a bonus.

Thoughts?

@michaell probably should have added some context; gonna edit the main post!

The app uses ChatGPT which costs me some X amount per call (not sure without looking). The goal is to ensure that call is covered by some kind of monetisation, and expect that a large fraction of users will download it as a novelty + use it a couple of times only

akamatchstic,
@akamatchstic@mastodon.online avatar

@michaell thanks for thinking on this, I do really appreciate it. Been experimenting with ads more, and I absolutely need to to handle GDPR etc. it’s a minefield to be honest!

Investigating other approaches now, such as allowing 5 free uses as a trial, or even having the app paid up front
