I once worked with goats. I moved into tech. This was a mistake. Expect sheep, wool, and textile history. Also birbs. Infosec on occasion. I use content warnings for topics and images that can trigger PTSD. I do not use them to shield people without trauma from experiencing racism, sexism, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination. If you can ignore politics, you’re not likely in need of content warnings for much of anything, really.

None of this is simple. Because of the complexity of history and inequality and war, one of the dangers is losing sight of the people who don't condone deaths of civilians no matter their nationality.

People are usually kinder, more thoughtful, and altruistic in an emergency than their governments.

If you're at it's likely you've been in a poorly-ventilated, crowded room with someone carrying the flu, RSV, or COVID.

It's not too late to wear a mask to protect yourself.

Please consider wearing a mask on your trip home. Don't attend mass infection events and get into a train with cancer patients, babies, people with asthma, etc.

I just remembered the time when planning for a company event included a suggestion to avoid presenting ID at a hotel by staying at a cash-only place in a neighbourhood with a high murder rate and lots of cops. But anonymity, right?

Anyway that dude is in leadership positions for organisations that need, really do need, to understand how people make choices about safety and technology.

A reminder that COVID is still around, and doctors sometimes believe bullshit.
Failure to treat is not punished, but it should damned well be discouraged.

A reminder that disabled people don’t have the same freedom of movement as bio- and neuro-typical people.

Borders are closed, or calculations are made about how much healthcare is too much healthcare. Yes, even in otherwise welcoming countries.

If someone needs oxygen tanks, mobility devices, a ventilator, or refrigerated medication, evacuating isn’t simple.

A decision to make people run for their lives is a decision to extinguish disabled lives.

"Fun" fact:

Anyone blaming DEI for the erosion of Boeing's safety record is less informed on diversity in STEM than the German engineers who were whisked away to the US after WWII. The bar is in hell! If Werner Von fucking Braun is more likely to judge someone based on their engineering skills, that regressive right-wing asshole who can't meet the standards set by war criminals should not be anywhere near a plane.

Not too long ago someone told me that the CCC doesn’t have these problems anymore.

Nope.

The people who denied that there were problems in 2015 saw harassment with their own eyes and deny it to this day.

Germany at the time had a heinous law about consent where a simple, clear, verbal “No” wasn’t enough. Victims had to fight back physically, something that is DANGEROUS and is not how panicked humans work

You’re not going to get Paxlovid in Germany without a fight.
Most doctors are not keeping up with research.
If you’re young without any chronic illnesses you can’t count on prophylactic therapy for Long COVID.

Whenever I miss Twitter, I just post about Germany in English and summon the potato-mansplaining.

A hint: in many places you can’t tell where someone’s mother is from by their last name. Shocking, I know! Also, immigrants! People can read articles! People can decide to read an article in German and then summarise it for an English audience!

Plus, and I realise this means a lack of integration, but jokes! If it’s illegal where you are, go to the cellar where it’s safe to laugh.

There are many accessibility issues but it's rare that disabled people are going to ask for help in the form of more scrutiny from biotypical people.
This is how ambulatory wheelchair users get harassed.
This is how younger people WITH THE BLUE BADGE get harassed while parking or sitting in the bus.
This is how people who need to attend to ostomy bags get screamed at in bathrooms.

If you see someone "faking a disability", no you bloody well did not.

Dogwhistles are a very real problem.

It is also true that racists ascribe more to calls for liberation than activists mean.

“Black Lives Matter” doesn’t mean “white lives don’t matter”

“Free Palestine” means exactly that. Human rights apply to every single human on earth.

The state of Gaza and the West Bank are too well documented for anyone to be able to claim that the checkpoints, the destruction of infrastructure, the attacks on journalists, the infant mortality rate - that it’s fake.

Hypothetically of course. How would I know this personally?

Palestinian children do not deserve to die because Hamas exists.

Israeli children do not deserve to die because of right-wing politicians in the government.

Collective punishment is a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Do not fall into the trap of dehumanising people. "But terrorists" has been the source of human rights violations for decades now. Don't be a sucker.

One of the things I don’t miss about Berlin is how inconsiderate the smokers are.
I bought masks before the pandemic so I wouldn’t have to use up all my rescue inhalers dealing with smoking everywhere.

If you don’t have a separate smoking area, your conference is not accessible.
There should be no smoking areas at the entrance.

Post-covid lung inflammation makes this important for more people than before.

Disasters are averted, roughly, like this:

Clueless bossman says "YOLO, let's do it live! Just launch now!"

Engineers say "Dude, you can get wrecked, but this ship isn't getting wrecked today"

Clueless bossman's pet engineers chime in with "It'll be fine! This bad thing you're whining about never happens! MAN UP WEAKLINGS!

The engineers with a clue refuse and build redundancy and failsafes, addressing edge cases.

The bad thing that never happens, happens, but nobody dies.
