I once worked with goats. I moved into tech. This was a mistake. Expect sheep, wool, and textile history. Also birbs. Infosec on occasion. I use content warnings for topics and images that can trigger PTSD. I do not use them to shield people without trauma from experiencing racism, sexism, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination. If you can ignore politics, you’re not likely in need of content warnings for much of anything, really.

Hey funders,

You know you could just... give... the money... to projects that need it. Like software libraries that ARE IN EVERYTHING.

No grants. Don't make tech nerds write grants.
Don't make the tech nerds hire grant nerds to write grants.

FFS don't fund research into this problem with a budget of double what it would take to SOLVE THE PROBLEM for a significant number of open source projects with code that is, again, IN EVERYTHING.

Palestinian children do not deserve to die because Hamas exists.

Israeli children do not deserve to die because of right-wing politicians in the government.

Collective punishment is a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Do not fall into the trap of dehumanising people. "But terrorists" has been the source of human rights violations for decades now. Don't be a sucker.

Murdering someone else's child will not bring the victims back.

If you want many eyes on your open source project, you need to get rid of assholes.

Bad community management is a security risk.

Assholes bully sole maintainers.
Assholes gatekeep and keep maintainer numbers low.
Assholes waste time on the mailing list with petty bullshit.
If you fundraise, assholes are bullying your grant writers and community managers.

Some of the best security contributors don't write a single line of code. They yeet assholes.

If you're at it's likely you've been in a poorly-ventilated, crowded room with someone carrying the flu, RSV, or COVID.

It's not too late to wear a mask to protect yourself.

Please consider wearing a mask on your trip home. Don't attend mass infection events and get into a train with cancer patients, babies, people with asthma, etc.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

If you’re going to a talk at by someone who is the sole maintainer of code you rely on, wear a mask! If you’re one of a small number of contributors to an open source project, wear a mask!

We talk about “bus numbers” but at an event without a public health pledge, your project should consider “COVID numbers”. Long COVID hits marathon runners, young people, vegetarians and meat eaters, people with the vaccines, etc.

Protect each other out there.

After enough practice, opposing abusive people becomes second nature.
A beaver seeing water flow where it shouldn’t thinks “Absolutely NOT, oh hell no, let me get a stick” and gets on with it.
Be like that when you see someone who should not be at an event.
The more you do it, the easier it gets.

A reminder that disabled people don’t have the same freedom of movement as bio- and neuro-typical people.

Borders are closed, or calculations are made about how much healthcare is too much healthcare. Yes, even in otherwise welcoming countries.

If someone needs oxygen tanks, mobility devices, a ventilator, or refrigerated medication, evacuating isn’t simple.

A decision to make people run for their lives is a decision to extinguish disabled lives.

Move south and you're safe. This was a lie.
Move south again and you're safe. This was a lie.
Move south again and you're safe. This was a lie.
Now Palestinians are in Rafah and can't go south. They are up against a wall. There is nowhere to go.

The population in Gaza is half children.
Over a million people, hundreds of thousands of children, are at risk of being murdered.

Call your governments. Not one more bullet should be shipped to the occupying forces.

A gentle reminder that IoT, health tech, and other devices are accessibility devices for many people.

Yes, the stove with WiFi.
Yes, the heart rate tracker.
Yes, the camera on the door.
Yes, the speech assistant.

Abstinence-only education doesn't work for infosec either.
You can only help to create alternatives if you acknowledge that disabled people exist, use tech, and understand privacy.

Don't be condescending. Be curious.

If we cut off funding to NGOs and aid agencies when an few employees are accused of violence there would be a lot of unemployed white western executive directors.

When authoritarian regimes try to kick out aid workers it’s usually a sign they’re up to something. Where is the outrage?

Palestinians need food, water, and medicine no matter what. NO. MATTER. WHAT.

Call your politicians.

One of the things I don’t miss about Berlin is how inconsiderate the smokers are.
I bought masks before the pandemic so I wouldn’t have to use up all my rescue inhalers dealing with smoking everywhere.

If you don’t have a separate smoking area, your conference is not accessible.
There should be no smoking areas at the entrance.

Post-covid lung inflammation makes this important for more people than before.

There is no excusing a pogrom.

Being from a religious or ethnic group does not make anyone accountable for the crimes of a particular government.

The attacks in Russia against people arriving from Tel Aviv are inexcusable.

Remember that equating everyday people with a government or non-state actor at war is anti-Semitic and Islamophobic.

Leave the planes alone. Leave houses alone. Let people worship in peace. Let people go about their day in peace.

People are sitting in poorly ventilated rooms without masks because the Belgian government doesn’t have laws forcing any public health measures

and they won’t DIY protecting their community

while they discuss

DIY software development to protect their communities

because people use technology filled with surveillance capitalist junk because governments don’t have laws forcing privacy-protecting measures.

I’ve information cryptographic, analog and digital,
I know every cypherpunk, adhere to Kerckhoff’s principle,
I bounce from node to node so I can make myself invisible.

I’m very well acquainted, too, with server vulnerability,
I escalate my privilege and I trash availability,
I know the latest breaches and I know first when the ‘net’s ablaze,

Making members of an ethnic group walk for miles and miles because otherwise you’ll kill them has been done before, and the perpetrators aren’t remembered as the good guys.

What are the elderly, disabled, injured, sick, dehydrated, and very young people supposed to do?

Never again is now, for everyone.

Not an ethnic group. POLITICIANS.
Not a religion. POLITICIANS.
Certainly not any of the children, who can’t even vote. POLITICIANS.

Hey there software developers who complain about managers as a concept,

Maybe devaluing glue work and only promoting surly software developers or MBAs to management is the issue, not the concept of having someone coordinate efforts and be a bridge between you and other teams.

A bad implementation of a good idea
doesn’t make
the good idea
a bad idea.

Before you select Linux, spend a day trying to get simple tasks done without a mouse.
Try Linux with speech to text.
Try Linux with a screen reader.

Frustrated? Either pick up some issues from an open source accessibility project or give them money.

...and stop being an ass to disabled people.

Oh sorry, GNU/ass

"Fun" fact:

Anyone blaming DEI for the erosion of Boeing's safety record is less informed on diversity in STEM than the German engineers who were whisked away to the US after WWII. The bar is in hell! If Werner Von fucking Braun is more likely to judge someone based on their engineering skills, that regressive right-wing asshole who can't meet the standards set by war criminals should not be anywhere near a plane.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

The problem with Boeing is that a bunch of bean counting assholes from McDonnell Douglas were allowed to take over a company run by engineers.
McDonnell Douglas planes were on my "oh hell no, rebook my flight" list for years. Now there's a Boeing plane on that list.
People who paid attention to the lessons learned from Challenger and other aerospace engineering disasters were pushed out by the same MBA-toting football bats who enshittify everything they touch.

Diversity in STEM is good.

Hamilton realized immediately that the mistake was one that an astronaut could make, so she recommended adjusting the software to address it, but she was told: “Astronauts are trained never to make a mistake.”
During Apollo 8’s moon-orbiting flight, astronaut Jim Lovell made the exact same error that her young daughter had..."
