On the difference between academic research and policy research, from an African perspective.

"Combined, all these factors reinforce the preponderance of incrementalist apolitical/technocratic tweaking and household/individual-centric interventions as the smart way to make development policy, rather than valiant quests towards broad-based macroeconomic transformation."

https://www.africanistperspective.com/p/there-is-a-lot-more-to-policy-research

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

HELL YEAH "Instead of imagining a do-gooder policy planner out to implement first-best solutions abstracted from context, policy research should strive to make nth-best recommendations that are robust to governments’ fiscal and administrative-bureaucratic capacities as well as the realities of local distributive politics."

NEOCLASSICAL ECONOMISTS: Here’s an elegant model. It says that the economy rewards us on the basis of our productivity.

EVERYONE: Nice! But your assumptions are bizarre (Murray Gell-Mann: “You guys really believe that?”).

KAHNEMAN AND TVERSKY: Yep, assumptions conflict withobserved behavior in the lab.

POLANYI: That model never existed, and can never exist. Human societies treat it as extreme dislocation and react by producing fascism.

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

MAUSS: Hm, interesting. Why is it that people find this thing so unfair and intolerable? And what would a fair model look like? Let’s develop one!

KEYNES: That model leads to disastrous policies.

SRAFFA: Even in pure theory the model is inconsistent.

NEOCLASSICAL ECONOMISTS: Lalala we cannot hear you.

This is unscientific.

If you live in the European Union, I would ask, as a personal favour, that you consider signing this petition for a tax on great wealth. It is reasonable; it would have major impact if put into place; it is very feasible (no revision of the Treaties needed). It is the brainchild of French economist Thomas Piketty, a leading scholar of inequality. https://tax-the-rich.eu

Abot the point by @musicman: I guess the reasoning is that the rich pay almost no taxes, but distort real estate markets (too many luxury homes, not enough affordable housing), so if they leave... it's no disaster, and it may be beneficial.

@Varpie That's a great point. Where are the Luxembourgers and the Maltese when we need them? Also thanks to @dana_cz , @matthew3, @zoldbergForPresident (yes, authentication runs on national implementations of EIDAS, which are quite patchy) @edgeofeurope

alberto_cottica,

@kramann not sure... I do see 15K+ signatures from Germany. I myself signed through the Belgian eID, which is itself not the best implementation of EIDAS.

@ook @vaurora @KatS I stand corrected. It is, indeed, a European Citizen Initiative. Like you say, citizens can sign it and non-citizens cannot, regardless of residency.

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

@KatS no worries, Kat. Only EU nationals are entitled to sign. Even if you manage to get a signature through as a non-national, when it is time to verify the signatures the national certification authorities will throw it out. Thanks for trying, though. :-) @vaurora @ook

    Dear Lazyweb, How make I stop mastodon in my firefox go beep once I receive a notification?
    I am running firefox-esr version 115.7.0esr-1~deb12u1 on Debian GNU/Linux 12
    (bookworm). I am on mastodon.green which runs github.com/mastodon/mastodon
    v4.2.7. I hate it when my computer decides to speak to me unless
    asked. I've searched under the hamburger menu, Settings, General to no avail.
    I guess I should type "about:config" in the address bar and search there?
    Thanks!

Let's start with a list of large, venerable institutions and their expression to call for radical reform: "just transitions", "extraordinary turnarounds", "system transformation", "systemic change", "structural transformation"...

    I want to celebrate it with this video me and my then-bandmates made years ago honoured the all-female Coro delle Mondine di Novi (Rice Weeders of Novi Choir), our mothers, sisters, daughters, comrades and important friends. The choir grew out of rice farming work in Northern Italy. Italian, with English subtitles.

    Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

    Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

    Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.

    John Oliver did a great piece on the "pig butchering" complex of scams that you should watch. As Zeke Faux discovered in his research for the book Number Go Up, online romance/friendship scams, powered by enslaved human trafficking victims, are being used to inflate the cryptocurrency economy. The fewer people who fall for these scams, the less of a market there will be for forced labor and, incidentally, cryptocurrencies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLPpl2ISKTg

    This should be a viral national story in . After this team unanimously unionized, Google refused to come to the bargaining table.

    A resolution supporting the workers was brought to the city council. The day the workers showed up to testify on the resolution, Google laid off the entire team.

    This was the precise instant when YouTube Music employees became aware that we had lost our jobs, as we were addressing the City Council.
