The biggest cultural shock after moving to Berlin years ago and something that I will never get used to is attitudes towards sanitation and cleanliness at places that you would expect at least a minimum effort to be made like at gyms, restaurants and furniture shops.

In essence, German business owners love having a Reinigungskonzept but have no idea about the value of or how to clean themselves.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

I think this may be related to how they start segregating children at an early age and how middle class people who tend up running businesses have never done any cleaning or retail work in their lives.

Low-grade kids go to Realschule and the middle class kids who get help from their parents get to go to Gymnasium. One group never needs to take on odd jobs to sustain themselves while in school while the other gets to float through their education on a pink cloud made of cheap student loans.

Not going to link to the actual review because I don’t care and will not care about the movie in question, but I find it interesting how quickly and thoroughly the meaning of “AI” in the public vocabulary as shifted from “futuristic automated intelligence” to “bad and lazily made”

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@baldur I don't know... This also sounds like when people go "we can always tell" with suspected CGI.

A friend's first feature length film was tanked by critiques at RÚV and elsewhere for elements that they thought were CGI but were mainly blood-sweat-and-tears levels of costume design.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@baldur that's true though. You just have to see tech recruitment tactics for the past 2 years.

Furiosa is a good film. There's some obvious CGI things in it but nothing that ruined the film.

Hot take: There should be a line break between } in an if statement and else {, so it's easier to get a comment in there.

This post is open to "how dare you" comments.

@ddlyh Sort of, but this is also largely a self-criticism post about my own linter rules.

Here's an idea: Instead of just blocking out AI scrapers, what about making sure that all that they see is some utter nonsense?

@ephemeromorph I must admit you're not wrong.

@BreoganHackett I just stumbled upon an article titled "how to remove a lipoma yourself" as you posted that.

I caught myself pronouncing "nothing" as "nuffin". I need to stop this before I'm stuck in a working class Northern accent.

alda,

I've never been felt like a woman stuck in a man's body, but I'm not sure if being stuck with a pseudo-Scottish accent that nobody takes seriously is a good thing.

Four days, I guess?

Any tips on how to make sure that my web app does not support Windows Recall and Copilot without dropping WCAG compliance?

For @emf, I’m making Mastodot, which in theory prints toots that are hashtagged for the event!

@mattgrayyes That gave me an idea: The same but baudot shortwave broadcast.

Unless you have experience teaching or training a variety of web tech (HTML, JS, CSS, SVG, etc), you likely don't fully understand their relative learning difficulty

Basing your assessment of which is harder on your attempts to teach yourself is esp unreliable

It's hard for you to know if a tech is hard or if you were just unlucky in stumbling into a bad entry point. Getting into something with the wrong mental model means you have to first unlearn a bunch of crap before you can actually learn

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@baldur don't forget that many of us have been learning those as web standards have grown in complexity.

We have two decades of institutional knowledge that people just breaking into the industry don't have and management types rarely value.

Random thought: if we lived in a society with multiple peopleoid species besides humans, interspecies fucking would probably be seen as good safe sex practice, because nobody could get pregnant from it.

Disadvantage: human has sex with human man for first time after practicing on cat men, is disappointed to find that human penis is not spiky.

Thank you for all the hard work. At least you had some fun playing DOOM.

What's more insane about the new windows built-in spyware (apart from the very basic fact that... Well, they have actually done it) is that... They are selling it as an AI feature?¿

As they have explained it, what it basically does is to store a screencap every few seconds in a folder that tents makes 10% of your disk where the fuck does ai is used there? What's next? Ai-powered mouse pointers?

@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social avatar

Having an AI ("Windows Recall" is enabled by default) that tracks every move you do on your computer and of course has no filter (Microsoft's own FAQ clearly states it will remember every password you type) is idiotic. But Tech bros are frothing at the mouth for anything AI so here we are.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@ddlyh @WhyNotZoidberg they simply did it again.
