California Democrats call for ceasefire: "Supporting a Durable Peace and Cease-Fire in Gaza" was passed by our party's Resolutions Committee at our May conference.
Many thanks to the Committee, Mirvette, Yoana, Hanieh, & the many other party members that worked on it.
Calls for:
• immediate release of hostages from Gaza
• protect civilians in Gaza & Israel
• mutual permanent ceasefire
• delivery of adequate lifesaving humanitarian aid to Gaza
• path for Israelis & Palestinians to mutually negotiated durable peace based on 2-state solution
BART fans: on Saturday, April 20 will be a last-ever run of the 1970s-era old BART trains. Enough of the new trains have now been delivered that the old ones are being retired.
Starts 1pm in Oakland at the 40th St/MacArthur station and goes down to Fremont.
A great opportunity to say hi to Bay Area political leaders & other transit supporters! 🚃🚃🚃🚃
Los Angeles is often associated with car culture, however, the city just passed Measure HLA to improve transit, sidewalks, bike lanes, and traffic safety by huge margins.
There's only one genuine supporter of contraception, abortion, and other reproductive rights in California's State Senate District 9 election: Marisol Rubio.
Her opponent Tim Grayson has skipped votes - functionally same as voting no - on multiple reproductive rights bill.
In CA State Assembly, a bill requires 41 Yes votes to pass. Voting no and not voting have the same impact.
Tim Grayson skipped votes on:
SCA10 - Right to abortion/contraception
AB569 - Ban on Firing Workers for Obtaining Abortion
AB2223 - Expanding rights to reproductive care
If you live in San Leandro, Ashland, Concord, Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Pittsburg, or other nearby cities, vote for Marisol Rubio for State Senate. Ballots should have arrived in the mail.
Five Democrats are running for Alameda County Supervisor District 5 in the upcoming primary:
Nikki Fortunato Bas
Ben Bartlett
John Bauters
Ken Berrick
Greg Hodge
Got to hear from them at yesterday's Alameda County Democratic Party
endorsement meeting, here are some highlights! 1/
A look at Fourplexes! Found in many streetcar suburbs, this type of home was common in the early 20th century. Today, building codes and parking requirements keep them rare even in places that have re-legalized them. https://ordinaryhomes.blogspot.com/2023/12/fourplex.html
Meet some unofficial #Link21 anime mascots! Plus, a few opinions about Northern California's plans for new train lines, improved service and connecting local transit.
One of the first decisions to be made for #Link21 is whether it should be designed for wide-gauge BART trains or standard gauge trains (which can also be branded as BART and run frequently).
My take: use regular trains. This allows project to serve the larger region better. #transit#trains#norcal
Another decision, which will determine where stations go and when and how often trains run, is what kind of trips #Link21 will serve.
Instead of funneling 9-5 commuters to downtown SF, system should serve all-day neighborhood & regional travel, with connections to local buses.
For example, residents of the San Antonio neighborhood in East Oakland, located between Lake Meritt and Fruitvale, are organizing to get an infill station with both BART and other trains. https://www.sanantoniostation.net/
Now onto some technical details. Don't buy the hype of hydrogen or battery powered trains - both techs are unproven, expensive, and have limited range.
Just go with overhead wires. This tech has a 100+ year track record and thousands of miles in service around the world.
Compared to battery or hydrogen, electrification using overhead wires is twice as energy efficient.
With Anamarie Avila Farias inside an Accessory Dwelling Unit! As an ADU dweller myself, I'm so excited that one of California's ADU experts is running for the State Legislature.
ADUs (also known as backyard cottages or in-law apartments) are one of California's recent housing success stories, with many people building them as starter homes for family members, a home to age in place, or a source of income. Anamarie has worked on state policy on ADUs and other housing, and is also a leader on education.
Contra Costa County sunsets are a special treat, you can feel the last warmth of the sun wave in the evening breeze. Also, free rides on the 16 and a couple other buses! 🌇🏙️🚌
Thank you everyone for your comments! Public comment was unanimously in favor of having wards 1, 2, and 6 vote in 2024.
Next stop: final vote on December 13. 🚌
An idea I proposed to the North Berkeley design standards that Planing Commission voted on was to allow ornament as an alternative to requiring notches, bump outs, and multiple materials on large buildings.
This keeps the building interesting, while also saving on structural & energy costs, as a rectangle is more efficient than irregular shapes.
Notches in a building create narrow weak points that require reinforcement. They also reduce the number of rooms, while increasing the wall area, making heating and cooling less efficient 🏘️
