My nephew is a great young man who had his education interrupted last year when he intervened when two of his classmates were being threatened by a guy who was looming over them and yelling. In the brief scuffle my nephew went hard down a rain slick stone staircase, with multiple injuries and broken bones which required three surgeries to repair. He lost the rest of the semester, unable to attend classes even remotely.

It is a new and audacious low for Trump to use Russia’s wrongful detention of WSJ reporter captivity of Evan Gershkovich as some kind of promotion of himself but I don’t know why I’m surprised. New and audacious lows are all he has to offer. I am beside myself that people are threatening to enable him to regain power in a temper tantrum not suited for adults old enough to vote.

I never imagined that at the age of 51 I would be completely completely over and done with driving at night. I used to intentionally drive at night, sometimes just to do it. But now if I have to go out after dark, I don’t like it. I feel like this is a major aging thing and I don’t like that either. I mean, I’m happy to be alive to age, but the rest of it is rather shitty.

I am locked out of a website that I need to access because I was unable to successfully identify items in a set of horrid CAPTCHA photos that appear to have been taken with a potato. Knowing now that CAPTCHA is essentially an AI training tool that has been used on all of us without our consent, I am doubly angry. Meanwhile, I can’t find any way to even contact this company to find out how I can get access to my account now. If I ever regain it, it’ll be to close the account entirely.

Has anyone been able to change their home and auto insurance lately in order to save money?

I’ve been with one company for 25 years, maybe more, and I’ve been shopping around just to see what’s available but every quote I get increases my auto premium 50% or more and my home premium more than doubles, for the same coverage as I currently have. I’m guessing new customers of my current insurer are paying much more too.

Insurance is such a complete racket.

Intuit, the company that spends millions lobbying to keep our tax system overly complicated for their own profit has, through their subsidiary Credit Karma, come up with “money dysmorphia,” a pathologizing term for young people - millennials specifically because its always open season - who have “above average“ savings, but still feel they are struggling financially.

Maybe they feel that way because they have money in the bank but still can’t afford to buy a house or have children.

Mark Zuckerberg bought that vote as surely and foully as he bought all of those thousands of ill gotten acres of indigenous land in Hawaii.

It really is hard to overstate how sleazy and inexcusable it is to churn out a constant stream of non-news stories (vaguely disguised op-eds, really) about Biden being too old to lead, based on nebulous feelings and speech foibles that aren’t new.

His age isn’t going to change and barring death or calamity, neither is the reality that he’s going to be the nominee up against a rapist fascist who promises to burn everything down. Pretending this is a real choice is journalistic malpractice.

I got an email on Monday evening that we might have low or no water pressure at some periods on Tuesday due to water main replacement.

Tuesday came and went and we had no experience of low or no water pressure, so we figured we just didn’t use the taps in the time frame that our house was affected and all was well.

Now it’s Friday and we have no water pressure.

Someone needs to send the water company a calendar.

Both Instacart and Walgreens are running ads featuring people who are sick ordering over-the-counter medication and food to be delivered. Brilliant, right? Promote the idea of staying home when sick, getting the things you need delivered so that you don’t infect others and can rest, right?

So why do both ads show the sick person opening their door, bare faced, to take the delivery directly? They could’ve shown them masked, a no contact delivery or both.

No one has learned a damn thing.

I’m sitting behind a time capsule. A late 80s Volvo with a bumper sticker from 1992-93 (referencing the Pittsburgh Penguins effort to win a 3rd consecutive Stanley Cup) and a Dole-Kemp campaign sticker (1996). The driver appears to be younger than the car. But the car itself is pristine. No rust, no notable dings or issues and it’s purring like a kitten.

I have so many questions.

Listening to the NYTimes radio show The Daily, interviewing a woman from Gaza City who is in Rafah now and how she describes her family members dying and suffering in the particular matter of fact way that people who are still in the middle of the trauma that will lead to C-PTSD do. No emotion, just cold fact, because if the emotion breaks through she won’t be able to regulate again. It’s terrifying. It is unspeakable.

As we remember #ShafiqahHudson and the fact that her death hinged on marginalization and the disparate treatment she received at the hands of the healthcare industry as a Black woman, it is also important that we name what killed her.

She is dead because she caught COVID.

The havoc that COVID wreaked on her body was fatal. It took years, and it was complicated by other things, but ultimately she would still be with us without that virus.

Think of her and put a mask on your face in public.
