How many US citizens are standing for election to the OSMF Board?

amapanda, to random
@amapanda@en.osm.town avatar

How often do you map in OSM? I started off a big active, then a little lull. A few years ago I tried to edit at least once a day, and kept that for a while.

find yours here on hdyc: https://hdyc.neis-one.org/

Fuck yeah! Remember those mods who banned someone for saying “wtf” (because it's “code for an obscenity”)? 🙄 🙄 🙄

Looks like the Board stepped in, and overruled the mods on that bonkers decision: “there is no explicit reference to profanity in the Etiquette Guidelines” 👍

Has anyone built (or considered building) a local-first, federated alternative to Mapillary / KartaView (or Google Street View)?

It would be interesting to be able to capture GBs/TBs of street level
images/LiDAR data and be able to view/edit in iD locally - and allow others to access (perhaps via a torrent) after publishing a metadata file somewhere with moderation (fediverse?)

iD editor’s ‘show local jpegs on map’ has got me thinking.

@jake I think @cquest from OSM France are working on some things like this, “Panoramax”

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GeoVisio
There's going to be a talk at SotM EU about it https://stateofthemap.eu/program

Is it quicker to get somewhere via car or train & bike? Here's a map

<https://masto.bike/@PolGM/111260860775930286>
(of course they use OSM as a data source)

OK, I think I've finally fixed most of the problems, and there's a new data update for most of my river map!

Hmmm. Pretty sure this isn't right!

Made my first edit to #OpenStreetMap using the website to correct this.

@Edent yay! thanks! there's a few of us OSMers here on the fediverse. :)

@Edent @darkling

For very simple fixes to OSM like that, there's (e.g.) a browser extension which makes that quick & easy https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenStreetMap_Tags_Editor

Someone made a game where you have to name every street in San Francisco. Cute. 🙂

(Of course it uses data. All geo innovations need )

also me: “I'm sure I can select the River Rhine by just looking for OSM ways with the right wikidata tag. That solves all multi-lingual issues”
OSM: “hold my topology gaps”

@MrMusAddict @pootriarch within OSM, it's easy to add a tag like that. Alas, it's getting data users to use that tag can be tricky...

OpenStreetMap congratulations to all the mappers, contributors and donors who made this journey possible. Strong map community 💪 🌎

@Synnr looks like photos from State of the Map conferences.

amapanda,
@amapanda@en.osm.town avatar

@Synnr The amount of people who have contributed to OpenStreetMap, to the map data, is massive. More than >2,000,000 people, and about 50,000 people edit the map every month.

Which app did you try? OSM is a little decentralised, so there are many.

amapanda,
@amapanda@en.osm.town avatar

@Synnr I haven't used Waze. But @organicmaps is great

I am trying to store loads of OpenStreetMap node locations in memory. A simple HashMap<i64, (f64, f64)> works for small datasets, but fails for bigger files.

This is why I learned !

I have a ~ 8 GiB GeoJSON file. What's would you use to compress it? gzip is regular and fast, but not as space saving. Something installable via apt on debian

(and no cheeky answers like converting it out of geojson! 😛 I wanna know what The Cool Kids are using as compression tools now-a-days)

There's currently a wave of bots trying to vandalize #OpenStreetMap by replacing names (and russian langauge names) with anti-russian slogans. The #OSM DWG has blocked 5,000+ accounts already

@MagicLike I don't know exactly (maybe @zverik, the creator, knows). But I presume it's to access the aerial/satellite imagery from those services. It's possible to use it w/o these specific aerial imagery. And there isn't any "totaly libre/free satellite imagery" (satellite and aeroplanes are expensive 😉)
