The transsexual dyke your liberal columnists warned you about.

Part-time woman, full-time nuisance. May contain traces of neurodivergence. Cisn't. Now you say ‘pronouns in bio’ because you have no other jokes.

Anti-fascism. Intersectional & queer feminism. Prison abolition. Liberation for all. International solidarity. I've been around long enough to see every discourse several times over, so spare me the bullshit.

Thank fuck not American.

Well, that's Win10 set up, and hopefully opted out of all the surveillance crap I can opt out of.

Pretty dystopian that Windows tells me during the installation that I will see ads on Windows, huh?

And "leave everything to us" while the setup finishes? Also dystopian.

Jesus christ, 30 GB just to get the shittiest OS in the world.

This new laptop outclasses my old one drastically – about five years newer, better CPU, more RAM, an SSD instead of HDD, etc. etc. – but Windows 10 just feels sluggish as fuck.

And the settings are, unsurprisingly, a privacy nightmare.

Anyway, I'll just uninstall all the Microsoft bloatware to cut down file size and then I'll flash Mint over it and that'll be that.

I would take perverse pleasure in using Windows 10 to burn a Linux Mint DVD, but this is my first laptop without a disc drive, sadly.

Pleasant surprise: it showed me the product key when I finished setting it up, so I just wrote that down in case I decide to fully wipe the device at some point. Might be the better choice, rather than wasting 30 GB of my very limited disk space (250 GB! What is this, the dark ages?) on a Win10 copy I'll never want to use.

What the fabric says: "linen"
What the fine print says: "30% linen 70% viscose"

Sigh.

Dear developers: Please stop using random valid domains in your examples or documentation, there are dedicated domain names and IP ranges for that.

For domain names for example use: example.com

Reference: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc6761#section-6.5

For IP address ranges for example use: 203.0.113.0/24
or
2001:DB8::/32

Reference: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5737#section-3 [IPv4] or https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc3849#section-4 [IPv6]

Thanks!

@leah my favourite example is Jon Davis, the creator of Garfield, using a fictitious domain for a dog toy shop in one of the strips, and that now being blocked by uBlock because it's known for spreading viruses.

The silent reservoir? | American Journal of Otolaryngology

SARS-CoV-2 may be hiding in middle ear!

"Our study highlights the potential effects of COVID-19 on the middle ear, suggesting a link between SARS-CoV-2 and OME onset. The virus, a significant contributor to OME, is detectable in the MEE nearly a month post-Omicron infection, indicating a potential alteration in OME treatment strategies and a risk of recurrence, emphasizing the necessity for otolaryngologist vigilance."

So uh. Best software to rip DVDs? I've tried with VLC, but it spent half an hour going through the entire 2 hour movie and then rendered only the 8 second intro to file 😬

I don't need the whole menu and all, but I need to be able to get the video, the right audio track, and the right subtitle track. I've got a bunch of old DVDs here, 10+ years old and sometimes more, that I'd like to archive before bitrot sets in.

I'm amused that people think DMs anywhere are private. Maybe it's because I've been an admin on forums and shit back in the day, but that just seemed like a given to me.

That's why, even when talking to family members I won't even name or gender my kid(s) online, even in DMs because anything that gets on the internet should be assumed to be public, and I value my kid(s)' privacy. Hell... my kids might not even exist... just like my cat. Maybe I'm salting my own presence online so only those who know me, actually know me.

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Gwendolyn and oddly, the same standard is never applied to corporate social media.

We all take it as natural that Facebook and Twitter can scan our DMs, that Google scans our emails, and that they all sell that data or use it to sell our personality profiles. Last year, when the Twitter whistleblower revealed basically anyone at Twitter could access everyone's most private data, there was barely any outrage over it from the people who have been peddling "fedi admins can read your DMs!" for the last year.

(And mind you, it's not like there's just a big "read private messages" button in the backend; an admin would have to go and manually look at the database to do it.)

So uh since I should be getting my new laptop this week, is there any good way to transfer all my stuff from Ubuntu to Linux Mint?

Data is easy, I can just copy over most of my home folder (i.e. documents, videos, etc.), but I have no idea how to get my software and their settings from A to B. There's probably stuff on here I don't remember installing and won't remember until something breaks and it'll be too late to figure out what it was. And also more immediate stuff like LibreOffice settings, Syncthing config, Thunderbird settings, etc etc.

Any advice?

Day… what, four? five? of this spam onslaught and no signs of stopping… at this rate, everyone may as well start blanket-defederating every instance with open registrations pre-emptively.

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

Once again extolling the virtues of limited federation mode.

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

I said before that instances need to change how they federate, that something like "after instance has first made contact, quarantine for x time span" would be necessary, and I was told that would kill small instances and was antithetical to the idea of the fediverse.

Now hundreds of thousands of spam bots are overwhelming the fedi, overrunning good-faith instances, and small instances are disappearing because they can't handle the onslaught, the bandwidth, the storage cost, the moderation effort, the being defederated for spamming.

Just saying.
