Ch 7 Nbr 18 — Do you ever use parentheses/brackets in your writing?

I use em-dashes in 1st person narrative quite often, mostly in the sense of setting off parenthetical remarks. I occasionally use parentheses, usually in dialogue but sometimes for very short or one word inserts.

I rarely use brackets, except for out-of-context author inserts in essays (see below), for inline author clarifications usually in front or rear matter in a larger work, or for attributions in quotes or epigraphs.

@sfwrtr I love brackets for 1st person narration, usually with characters who aren't great at structuring their inner monologue (cough ADHD), so new tangents constantly come up.

Dashes in prose, too, in place of parentheses or colons; em or en depends on what style I'm trying to adhere to – I prefer "sentence—other sentence", but that tends to screw with word count software and text rendering, so I begrudgingly use "sentence – other sentence" usually.

And of course em dashes for when someone suddenly stops spea—

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

@sfwrtr when you use em dashes like that, en dashes have mostly one use: to indicate ranges and connections. Like "we're open 9–5", "the Liverpool–Manchester Express leaves in ten", "the Madrid–Barcelona match ended with a tie", etc.

At least to my knowledge, I'm not typesetter.

Ok so for the second time, my Thinkpad T570 touchpad just suddenly stopped working. The last time, only a reboot fixed it. This time, it intermittently accepts touches, but mangles them awfully.

The red joystick still works, as do the mouse keys.

Any ideas?

and fediverse, help me out here, please.

A while ago, I saw a comment somewhere (not necessarily fedi) that boiled down roughly to this:

"The British aristocracy made their (edit: male) servants recognisable as such by dressing them in formal clothes, but in mismatched combinations (i.e. tailcoat with a black bowtie, long tie with a wing collar)."

This was (roughly speaking and to the best of my knowledge) about the Victorian through Edwardian and early Modern periods, i.e. when formalwear as we know it (morning coat, tailcoat, etc.) already existed in roughly the form we know it.

I can't find that comment anymore, and I don't expect I ever will, but it would be fascinating to read more about this subject, very specific and niche as it is. I've tried googling around for it (i.e. "historical british servant dress codes"), but found very little.

If anyone has some reading material on that (preferably online or books buyable online, if not I'll have to see if my library can get foreign (english) literature), I would be super grateful for any links or the likes.

Say you have a shitton of documents on paper, regularly need those digitally too, and don't have the physical strength to regularly lift heavy folders to go looking for the physical copies - what's a good way to keep track of both the physical and digital copies? Like some sort of inventory system that stores a digital copy of the document and with it the location of the physical original?

I'm sure document management software like that exists for companies, but I have no idea about consumer-grade software. Ideally, I would set up a few categories and then each time I get a new document, I'd scan it, fill in some metadata, and the software would file it away for me.

Of course this would also be doable manually with folders on my disk and a spreadsheet or something, but then I'd have to give each doc an ID myself and fill in everything into the spreadsheet and by then it's not worth the effort anymore.

Anyone been in a similar situation and how did you solve it?

@Andres4NY "we don't have our own cops under control" is something no city should have to say, ever, and yet I can guarantee you the same thing happens, or would happen, all across the country.

How any government can expect us to place our trust in the police when said police openly defies the law on a daily basis and no attempt is ever made to reign them in... what's the difference between cops and criminals, except that cops are being accommodated?

The Israeli playbook:

  1. Create a man-made humanitarian crisis
  2. Let in tiny amounts of aid
  3. Shoot at starving people as they scramble to get aid
  4. Tell the world "it's their own fault"
  5. Repeat, over and over again

Associated Press: Cumbersome process and ‘arbitrary’ Israeli inspections slow aid delivery into Gaza, US senators say

“What struck me yesterday was the miles of backed-up trucks. We couldn’t count, but there were hundreds,” Merkley said in a briefing with Van Hollen to a group of reporters in Cairo.

[…]

Trucks carrying aid cargos can wait for weeks at the border for their turn to be processed, they said they were told by aid officials. […] During the process, cargos are unloaded and reloaded several times. If inspectors reject a single item in a truck, it must return with its entire cargo to be re-packaged, starting the weeks-long process all over again […]

[…]

The two senators said they saw a warehouse in Rafah filled with material that had been rejected in inspection. It included oxygen cylinders, gas-powered generators, tents and medical kits used in delivering babies.

Aid workers told the senators the tents were refused because they included metal poles, and the medical kits because they included scalpels. Most solar-powered equipment appears to be barred — though it is vital in Gaza, where central electricity has collapsed and fuel for generators is in short supply.

It's kinda depressing how tumblr is imploding now and I'm seeing half my follow list go "man, after seeing both twitter and tumblr do this, it's really showing how it's a bad idea for a social media network to be run by a company who can make arbitrary changes without user consent.

anyway, here's my bsky: ..."

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

@foone fucking yes. I've been lobbying for the fediverse on Twitter for two years now, offering help and tech support and explanations to anyone wanting to migrate, I've been emphasiszing that there are software (softwares?) other than Mastodon and pointing out GoToSocial, PeerTube, Pixelfed, etc.; I've been pointing out that Bluesky originated as a Dorsey-led Twitter spin-off, I've been highlighting Bluesky's tech and moderation failures, etc. etc.

...and I've gotten zero. Nothing. People either bring up superficial discourses like "but the admins read your DMs!", follow influencers who came to "Mastodon" and ragequit when their attempts to impose their Twitter habits on the network didn't work, or at best people signed up to mastodon.social, had bad experiences because it's mastodon.social, and quit.

But people hand out Bluesky invites left and right. Even people I know are on the fediverse and enjoy it here.

If a corporate platform restricts who can join, it's "exclusive", when they impose bad rules, it's "growing pains", when they have technical failures, it's "innovative".

When we do it, it's "elitist", "censorship", and "only for nerds".

We just can't win.

amberage,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

@foone I've been extolling the virtues of community-run moderation, distributed administration, fewer single points of failure, and moderators you know and can talk to personally, and people have been very, very silent, but very vocal about "Bluesky is so cool please don't ask about how they handle reply guys hatespeech ornominally fine speech underpinned by nazi ideology or anything else just let me enjoy my corporate walled garden"
