The amount of Mastodon forks that mostly just change the UI, and the amount of UI bullshit Gargron creates, increasingly make me think that what's needed is to separate UI and AP more.

Adopt an API (ideally: not the Mastodon API, realistically: probably the Mastodon API) that as many projects as possible agree on and build separate projects, for handling ActivityPub and for handling web UI.

A lot of users never see Mastodon's web UI anyway, they use mobile clients, many of them third-party clients. The next logical step is to decouple UI and core development entirely.

Okay, this is a long shot, but maybe someone can help.

I've got a Nokia phone with KaiOS on it (Firefox OS offshoot). It's utter garbage and I would like to switch to a new one.

The one problem is that there's a lot of WhatsApp chats on there that I would like to keep, mostly for sentimental purposes. And since this is a niche OS with a WhatsApp implementation developed specifically for that phone, which lacks all but the most basic features (no WhatsApp web, no calls, no file transfer, and crucially no backups), if I just took the SIM out and stuck it into my new phone, I'd lose all that.

Does anyone have experience with that sort of situation, or with KaiOS in general, and could give me some pointers about manually scraping that data off the phone? I don't have high hopes, but perhaps someone out there knows something.

On the contrary, generative AI tools are known to regularly “hallucinate”, meaning they simply make up answers.

That's all they do. Even when they show correct information, models have no concept of what that means, what a person is. They calculated the most likely sequence of words, and it just happens to be correct sometimes.

question from a complete novice:

I was trying to iron a crease into my chinos and I just couldn't get them to line up nicely. I laid side seam on side seam for both legs, but from the knee upwards, the legs wouldn't lie flat and the crease I ended up ironing was wobbly at best.

What am I doing wrong? How do I do that better?

I iron on a table (with a heat-resistant ironing blanket underneath), not a board, if that's relevant.

    @Tijn I've got a few mutuals and friends who I'm very fond of, but who sometimes have downright insufferable posts or takes (on inconsequential stuff, not on stuff that's friendship-breaking, like backing nazis), and I want to see them and read how they're doing and what they're up to, but without suppressing the urge to hurl my phone at the wall multiple times a day.

    Is there an easy way to restore default behaviour in CSS?

    I've got a spoiler thing going on where I make text and background black and remove text-decoration for an element. When it's hovered on, I want to restore everything to default. I.e. links should be blue again, purple when visited, underlined, etc.

    Recreating all that with CSS is not only more work, but also results in inconsistent behaviour (i.e. color: purple is not the same purple as the default visited link colour, etc.).

    Using color: initial; didn't work, the link was black instead of blue.
