The latest COVID wave in Australia is building slowly but should be over by the start of the summer holidays. The newest virus variant (XBB) is the primary cause of this wave.

Currently available bivalent vaccines protect us against severe disease caused by the latest variants. Newer XBB specific vaccines have been approved by TGA so they should be available soon.

We’re in a new COVID wave. What can we expect this time? — https://theconversation.com/were-in-a-new-covid-wave-what-can-we-expect-this-time-216820

It's finally hot enough in Melbourne that I've had to turn on the air conditioning while working from home (30C in my home office!).

I was a little concerned, though, because for the first twenty minutes or so the A/C unit refused to cool the room. There was a little bit of air being circulated, but that's it.

It finally occurred to me that we have a reverse cycle air conditioner and that I should probably switch it from heating to cooling!

Life would be so much better if the Guardian and ABC Australia news apps had keyword block lists for breaking news alerts. There are several topics (eg the former US president) that I can block everywhere else but not on those news apps. Sorely tempted to turn off alerts altogether.

ameel,
@ameel@mastodon.social avatar

@jpm Yeah but if I do that then I don't get the alerts I need. I'd much rather have the ability to customise and control which alerts I get and how often I get them. Pretty much all the apps I use give me this level of control, except for the news apps.

ameel,
@ameel@mastodon.social avatar

@jpm I appreciate your concern, but that is not what I have a problem with here. All my notifications are silent (I'm on an Android phone) so they never interrupt me. My issue is with notification content, not with notification frequency or anything like that.

When they start to threaten the ones who pay their salaries you know the strikes are having an effect!

"Hundreds of classes were cancelled this month when staff at the University of , RMIT and Monash walked off the job. Now two students at RMIT have been called in for disciplinary hearings after they came out with signs on campus to support their striking teachers."

Why the fuck are people getting black house exteriors in Australia?

ameel,
@ameel@mastodon.social avatar

@allrite The house next door was sold earlier this year. Our new neighbour drives a massive, black, American SUV (); had a 2.5m tall, all-black fence installed around the property; and last week got all his roof tiles painted black. He'll suffer in the heat, but at least he's committed to the bit!

    I take public transport to work and don't drink coffee/tea, so I spend between $10 and $30 every day I got into the office (depending on whether or not I bring lunch from home).

    US workers, on the other hand, are spending an average of $51/day when they go to the office. And if you're going to the office five days a week, that adds up pretty quickly!

    Returning to the office is ‘wildly more expensive’ today than in 2019—here’s how much people are spending – https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/09/heres-how-much-workers-are-spending-on-returning-to-office.html

    Replacing gas heating with reverse-cycle aircon leaves some people feeling cold. Why? And what's the solution?

    (Short answer: your house isn't well insulated, so your cold walls, ceilings, and windows are cooling the warm air coming from the aircon.)

    @thepoliticalcat Nice! We bought a place last year. It has reverse-cycle air conditioning, but it isn't particularly well insulated. We're looking to progressively upgrade this over the coming months, and also add solar power and a heat pump to the mix.
