please tell me the most obscure joke you know

(feel free to explain or not explain it, depending on what you find more amusing to think of me reading it)

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

(Obscure only because I have to remember my schoolgirl French to tell it!)

I just had an idea for a neat thing Apple could do.

Y’know the little tabs that pop up when you select text in iOS?

It’d be cool if the device learned which actions you tend to choose in a given situation.

So, if you choose “Translate” more often than, say, “Format,” they could make that a little easier for you.

This is an idea that I just had.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@hotdogsladies I’m still irrationally pleased that I invented that edit menu for one of my apps before Apple used it (ie before iOS had copy and paste).

UK friends - do you have an air conditioner?
If so, which one?
There are so many different options and I don't know how to choose!

Boosts, as ever, appreciated.

(UK replies only, thanks. Not interested in fans & ice-cubes. Will be run off solar power, so I'm comfortable with the energy usage. Yes, I hate having to ward off reply-guys with these long disclaimers.)

Anyone used NSUndoManager with ? I've now got all my business logic running on its own actor, which uses a custom serial queue (so is not on the main thread). I'm running into conceptual issues:

  • I'd really like to use the same undomanager that SwiftUI uses, but that one is presumably main thread confined?

  • When registering e.g. a redo operation, you have to perform that registration while the undo manager is undoing. So using a task inside the undo op would not work…

Sometimes I’ll just look at the tube map for ages just for fun. And it’s things like this that make me think I probably don’t need to bother getting an official diagnosis.

I took great care of iPad support. @IceCubesApp uses the iOS (TabBar) layout when the size class changes to a compact width. On regular width size classes, the app uses a custom sidebar layout. All that with SwiftUI, without reloading any root view so state is kept.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian @IceCubesApp Does it map selected tab between the two modes? If so, how did you do it?

I sympathise with hobbyist app developers who suddenly have to provide their home address to users. But… I also think that consumer protection should mean that if someone sells you something, you should have a right to know who that someone is and how to contact them. I don’t know how best to reconcile those things…

As an EU citizen, I'm using my right to deletion to get to remove my data for me.

Here is the link to the form: https://policies.stackoverflow.co/data-request/

I requested a copy of my data for my personal backup and to confirm if they fulfilled my request.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@luca @konstantin I’m being slightly devils advocate here, but also genuine question:

Stack overflow is designed that the questions and answers are shared resources edited by multiple people, like Wikipedia. Would you support someone being able to force Wikipedia to delete their past contributions if they so chose?

I guess the difference is that SO puts the names of all contributors next to a question (created by, edited by), whereas Wikipedia only puts those in the history.

Any iOS devs who have done cloudkit sync without using core data? How do you monitor local changes to know what to sync?

Do you do it manually, where every mutation you also trigger a sync, or do you have some kind of wrapper around your local persistence that automatically tracks changes?

I deleted my previous quote boost about Balder’s Gate and AI voice cloning. Came off as accusatory to the actors and that’s not what I meant.

I meant that it irks me that the AI theft of visual artist’s work is generally perceived by the public as amazing and inevitable where the AI cloning of someone’s voice is seen as an intolerable threat to their identity and livelihood.

I get there’s a degree of difference but my point is that AI threatens all forms of creative work.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm hmmm, cloning one person’s voice (specifically) isn’t really a thing a human does, other than impersonators or comedians. But doing art “in the style of” another artist totally is; and doing art that’s inspired by the styles of multiple artists is really common.

I don’t think it’s fair to call it hypocritical to object to the thing that AI does but people don’t do, while not objecting to something AI does but people also do.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I'm also somewhat playing devil's advocate here. My actual views on AI are fairly complex, and coloured by the fact that I'm also anti various parts of copyright law in general, especially when it comes to derivative works.

In the absence of my anarchistic copyright views coming to fruition, I tend to come down to, 1: could a person plausibly do this? 2: would I be ok with a person doing this?

But yeah, it's complicated.

Yikes. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24145838/rabbit-r1-android-app-pixel-6a

I am baffled by these AI devices. There must be some demand. But even the Rabbit shouldn’t get a pass for being “only” $200. “Only” $200 can get you a phone. And that phone will do a bunch of similar things, without needing charging every four hours, and without a UI designed by a sadist.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell IMO the Humane pin would have utility if it was always recording, so it sees what you see, and can therefore use a whole load of context about your life.

Of course I wouldn’t trust any tech company to do that without being evil…

Taffer, to hiring

I wish you could do job searches with lots of filters like you can for houses (see realtor.ca for example):

  • remote only
  • flexible/unlimited PTO
  • sane sick leave
  • salary
  • benefits

Instead we've got dumb keyword searches and "remote" jobs that are actually "hybrid" in stupidly expensive or distant places.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@Taffer I would want to exclude “unlimited" PTO. It's only ever there to guilt trip you into taking less. I want an actual number of days, and I'll take that exact number!

I’m an iOS engineer. As I suspect is Common, I have side project ideas, but I don’t have the mental bandwidth to make much progress on them after my day job.

Has anyone in a similar position ever considered paying a (trusted) contractor to help get the side project started?

Pet peeve: things presented as fake “metro maps” where the topology isn’t part of your message/analogy.

I just saw one that replaces the London station names with the names of famous engineers. If the line topology showed something like who worked together, who built upon whose ideas etc, it’d be clever. But just replacing the names randomly? Means nothing. Get in the sea.
