Attention all PNW filk people on the Emerald Forest Filk mailing list we run on our server: we're having issues delivering to Gmail, and are getting email errors indicating Gmail is cranky at the emeraldforestfilk.org domain. I've posted a notice directly to the list but I'm also posting it here for benefit of anybody subscribed via Gmail in particular.

Subscribers to the list may need to temporarily use filk@murkworks.net instead of filk@emeraldforestfilk.org.

@moira or I will post an all clear to the list when this issue has been resolved.

Please forward to other filk people on social media as appropriate. Thanks.

PSA for area folks: Dara and I just got back from the farmers market in Lake Forest Park, and it's a good thing we went when we did--because while we were down there, the air quality took a hard hit. We've got wildfire coming in, Seattle area people. If you have sensitive lungs take precautions if you have to go out. Mask up, not only for COVID protection but ALSO for breathing protection as well.

Call for help from fellow gamers: anybody out there have a recommendation for best way to set up the Deck so that I can remote into it and have access to its desktop from my computer?

I'm trying to overhaul my mod setup for Skyrim on it tonight and manipulating files on its tiny screen is super tedious. :P

I have Remmina installed but don't really know how to use it, do I need to also set up a VNC server or something? Any advice welcome and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

(P.S. I WAS using AnyDesk but they went to a subscription model and started throttling how long you could keep a session open without subscribing. So I ditched that as a solution to my problem.)

Have returned from a bike ride to Bothell, and for the first time since getting my ebike in 2019, I actually successfully rode it up the steep, twisty sidewalk that leads from the Burke-Gilman trail to the street corner where we have to cross Bothell Way to get home!

A small thing but I feel accomplished about it nonetheless. ❤️ 🚴

For the first time, @moira and I now have health insurance via Washington state's insurance registry. We went this route following my layoff because it was hundreds of dollars cheaper than going on COBRA.

And mind you, it's still not great, we're still paying north of a thousand bucks a month for this coverage, and it doesn't include dental and vision. So I do still have to chuck money at COBRA for that.

But the main thing I'm pleased about right now is that I was just able to get the latest round of my inhaler for only sixty bucks rather than the 240+ I've had to drop last couple times I had to get this thing. So there's that.

In which the Dragonborns venture into Snow Veil Sanctum with Mercer Frey, only to discover their Guildmaster is a treacherous bastard; agree to help Karliah get a certain journal translated; and break into a Dwemer museum to get info for that journal. Also in which Luciriel's player has game breakage and has to re-run all of the same action solo. THANKS, GAME!

This just in: I have an interview tomorrow. With, as it happens, a contract from my previous employer, who literally just laid me off. Apparently they had a new contract come across their radar that they thought I might be a good fit for, so they reached out to me.

It'd be kind of hilarious if I got picked up again by the exact same employer.

But we'll see if the client thinks I'm interesting. Interview scheduled for tomorrow morning. Wish me luck, y'all.

SDET in the Pacific time zone looking for a remote position to work in automated testing. Current skillset includes Python, Java, Git, Cocoapods, Homebrew on Mac, Xcode, IntelliJ, Pycharm, Postman, and Docker. I'm familiar with Jira, Confluence, TestRails, and QTest.

I've worked in both UI testing (with Selenium and XCUITest) and API testing (with RestAssured and Unirest).

I am comfortable working in Windows, MacOS, and Linux (predominantly Ubuntu and Debian).

Examples of my automation work can be found on my personal GitHub, here: https://github.com/annathepiper

Do you have a position that might be a good match for me? If so, I'd love to hear from you!

@KindlyWizard Hard for me to predict since my house does watch both shows. I suspect you'd get a lot more out of it if you were also familiar with Lower Decks. But I think they did a good job of setting up the scenario that brings the LD characters into the SNW timeline.

As a dedicated Skyrim player and someone who's also a member of an active Guild in Elder Scrolls Online, I am extremely disappointed to hear about Zenimax/Bethesda's transphobic treatment of an employee.

And here's the thing y'all: Skyrim, ESO, Morrowind, and Oblivion are all contributing to my keeping my shit together during COVID. And as someone who's still got asthma and other risk factors making COVID exposure a goddamn problem for me, I STILL need to keep my shit together. So I'm not bailing on the games I already own.

But I will not be buying Starfield or giving ESO any further money unless I hear that this is made right. :( And I'll be contacting Bethesda to say so.

Setting goals is very different when you actually choose your tasks at a job.

People who create the performance review systems almost always can choose and almost never think about those of us who are assigned tasks and do them.

Goal based systems absolutely, positively do not work for most software engineers. My success isn't about goals. It just isn't.

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@uncanny_kate PREACH. Every single time I've ever had to do a goals-based review, I've resented it, because all I really want to fill in is "Uh, my goal is to DO MY JOB?"

Because hell, ninety-nine percent of the time at my last job, things were often on fire enough that I had no choice but to focus on putting out fires. And if things weren't on fire, I kept getting yanked onto bridges and was lucky if I had enough time in HALF of the day to do my job. :P
