Duck Duck Go is down because Bing is down.

(Also, you saw the recent AI stuff, right?)

Folks, I knowโ€ฆ I use Duck Duck Go also but remember they have venture capital. Enjoy it while it lasts (or letโ€™s fund and build alternatives differently that arenโ€™t temporary businesses with profit motives and exits but commons-owned institutions working for the common good).

1980s: Personal computers! So you don't have to use a mainframe! Independence!

2000s: Web services! So you're dependent on a handful of mainframes! Annoying if one is offline, but you can still get stuff done.

2020s: AI! So you're dependent on a single mainframe that serves everyone world-wide! Too bad if it goes down.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia: COVID keeps killing more people every month than flu does in a year.

โ€œIn other words, there were three times as many confirmed Covid-19 cases as influenza cases,โ€ Adrian Esterman, professor of biostatistics at the University of South Australia, told TND.

โ€œAnd the death rate associated with Covid-19 was about four times as high as for influenza.โ€

He said it was โ€œcompletely crazy that face masks are not mandatory in all health care, hospital and aged-care settingsโ€.

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 Funny, I can get a flu jab here tomorrow but if I want a Covid booster, I have to wait over thirty years.

(Boosters only available to over 80s in .)

So! Many! Kittens!

(Going to record a demo of the new interactive shell โ€“ REPL to some โ€“ and multi-page Settings this afternoon, just planning it out now.)

Oh and is that me creating and calling web routes interactively in the REPL on a live server? Why yes, yes it is.

It remains fucking absurd that the U.S. sold off most of its rail lines, so Amtrak has to pull over and let freight trains pass, as those are the companies who bought them. Iโ€™m sitting here stuck outside of town for the last 30 minutes because of this fuckery.

After four and a half months and almost 34,000 stitches, Iโ€™ve finished my cross-stitch 1-bit version of Hokusaiโ€™s Great Wave. Itโ€™s big, 25โ€x 17โ€ (pen in the first photo for scale). Thanks to @hypertalking for letting me use his wonderful original 1-bit art.

Jason Fried from 37Signals announces a โ€œweb-based booksโ€ product, which I must admit does sound intriguing, even though I already made my own custom book serialization site with Eleventy + Buttondown. Sounds like business books is their main use case, but still, good idea. -> โ€œWorkbook [โ€ฆ] They have covers, they can have title pages, they can have picture pages, and they can have text pages. Each book gets its own URL, and navigating and keeping track of your progress is all built right in.โ€

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@ricmac Yeah, no thanks. Not buying anything from โ€œno politics in the workspaceโ€ / โ€œDEI is bad, actuallyโ€ 37Signals.

I am amused. One the one hand, Microsoft is introducing Recall, which literally takes screenshots of everything you do on windows, but on the other hand, they are taking users ability to take screenshots of their browser away if their company configures it as such.

One of the reasons I've been subscribed to vimeo for maybe a decade now, was that it never did the automatic copyright filtering for my fpv videos like youtube.

Now it's been properly enshittified with a filter that doesn't work, so finally allows me to not renew my sub. Good job, Vimeo!

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@jimmac Oh ffs. Why canโ€™t they just host bloody videos :(

Today in Western societies you can say anything but not what undermines the founding pillars of neoliberal oligarchic power. If you do so then you become an enemy.

aral,

@pafurijaz This. All protest is welcome as long as it can be commodified and doesnโ€™t actually threaten the status quo.

โ€œThe Big Web has users โ€“ a term Silicon Valley has borrowed from drug dealers to describe the people they addict to their services and exploit.โ€โ€” @aral, โ€œWhat is the Small Web?โ€

https://ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-small-web/

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@jmeowmeow @raganwald Yep :) And while itโ€™ll happily serve you a static site from 1993 (as it should, being a web server, after all), the most important aspect is that it will hopefully enable a peer-to-peer web of Small Web places people can use to both be public (should they wish) and be private (actually private), e.g., see https://ar.al/2023/02/20/end-to-end-encrypted-kitten-chat/

And, eventually, set these places up in ~10 seconds without technical knowledge. (https://codeberg.org/domain/app) :) ๐Ÿ’•
