Honestly, I don’t have anything in the way of a WWDC 24 wishlist. The two platforms I want to see get major investment — iPadOS & visionOS — aren’t ones I expect a whole lot of, this time round. visionOS still has serious catch up to do before it’s a finished 1.0 (half the OS is emulated iPad apps), and then we can start thinking about what’s next. Apple has little engineering bandwidth left over to progress iPadOS — we’re 2 years away from this year’s critical feedback going anywhere

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I had hopes that sharing the base between iPadOS and VisionOS would mean more chances of a pro app like Xcode coming to the platform. Otherwise is not going to be really long until Vision Pro becomes an iPhone on your face…

"Three months in, and the alternative app stores that have so far launched in Europe are doing little to jeopardize Apple’s monopoly — and you know Cupertino is feeling pretty satisfied about that.”

Translation: Apple's Core Technology Fee and related restrictions have made it impossible to meaningfully compete with the App Store, and thus clearly violate the DMA. If it's not seriously curtailed, fast, Apple's looking at a whopping $40B fine

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I totally agree that the CTF is a stopper, but Android doesn’t have it and there isn’t much competition either. The only outliers come from other big companies. And in Windows the only real stores are about gaming. Which hasn’t happened yet on iOS.

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Sure. I think that we still need to se what big companies do with it. Steam, Epic, Meta, Spotify… they haven’t made a move yet.

For them the CTF is pocket change in comparison for what it means to a small developer who is afraid of being to successful.

Every time I see some B-roll with a MacBook entering Mission Control or Exposé, it makes me wish iPad had that instead of Stage Manager. Unlimited windows, that can be tiled on a key press, and Fullscreen Spaces that you can flip through with the trackpad

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith that would be awesome. Also, Stage Manager windows don’t feel the same as window management in Mac. It feels clunky and slow. I don’t know why.

Having read and watched through all the iPad coverage, it really seems like a lot of people are aligned on the top items where iPad falls down

• The Files app infrastructure
• The too-restrictive audio system
• Background processing
• Multiple user support

"Just put macOS on it” is the fallback for most criticism, because it's hard to articulate just why iPadOS doesn’t cut it. And the "Where's the Calculator?” discourse isn't about a calculator app, it's about the missing apps of the core OS

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Also, the “Developer Mode” should be a real developer mode and let you use JIT, compile software, etc.

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

So uh I accidentally unlocked Final Cut Pro on the iPad Pro (2018), so I took it for a spin. It all just worked, and was perfectly usable? Even the 4K export was fast.

Makes you wonder why officially it only lets you install on an iPad with an M-series chip…

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith It’s a little unfair that Apple can discriminate in which devices can run an app and the rest of developers can’t (as far as I know).

We're 5 years in now and even the most talented and experienced SwiftUI devs aren't building apps that are better than what you could build before, nor does it seem like there are kinds of apps that weren't possible before.

And still, a large chunk of dev energy is spent just trying to make it ‘as good as' before, too. Churn for the sake of churn. Some big apps have fancy new UIs with terrible layout performance, completely squandering the long-held lead Apple's chip teams bought the platform

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I learned to code and make apps thanks to SwiftUI being more accessible. I don’t think @FitWoody_Camp has anything to envy to any app made with UI KIT. For me much quicker (idea to launch in 3 months) and maintainable.

visionOS is Apple's most locked-down general computing platform in history; the kinds of features Apple keeps for itself in the name of ‘privacy’ are absolutely going to cause massive antitrust issues if those restrictions are all still in place by the time the platform takes off (on this form factor, or another). Virtually every defining feature of the platform experience is already a red flag. Kinda wild that Apple, already aware of its obligations under the DMA, would design an OS like this

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith If it has the same success as the iPad still wouldn't be under the “Gatekeeper” designation by the DMA.

christianselig, to random
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

Got my hands on Waterfield's bizarrely compact Vision Pro case and gonna do a blog review, any questions about it?

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig How are you using your Vision Pro on your daily basis? Anything interesting other than viewing videos?

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

As a developer based in the EU, of course I want to be able to sign on to Apple's new business terms and access the hard-won benefits of the DMA (like external distribution).

But there’s no way I ever would with the specter of a CTF hanging over, even if I never build an app that hits 1M annual downloads.

@rileytestut tried to convince me to build something for AltStore, and I've had several huge Cydia-distributed projects in the past. But Apple's new business terms are currently a no-go

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @rileytestut The only exception they should add is no CTF for completely free (no ads, no nothing) apps. But I don't think a 0,5€ per user per year for a for-profit app is anything crazy. That's exactly how it's been working on the App Store since the beginning.

twostraws, to random
@twostraws@mastodon.social avatar

After enough of you messaged asking if I was going to do it… fine, I’ll be that guy, and wear Vision Pro on my flight home. It certainly ought to make it pass a lot faster! 😂

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@twostraws why did you declare it? I bought things on the state and did not declare them back on EU.

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I keep seeing it floated that 'if you have a million users, and you don't have a way to make money, what are you even doing?’, which is incredibly toxic. Screw everybody who provides free software/tools, I guess?

I guarantee you every single one of you relies on software that has more than a million users and makes $0, somewhere in your tech stack.

Having a single app like that in your portfolio, even if you have robust paid apps, could be enough to bankrupt you under Apple's CTF proposal

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I see the new rules for those apps who want to monetize all the way, why would Mastodon choose them if they can’t even reach the 1.000.000$ a year limit of the Small Business Program?

Looking through MarketplaceKit.framework documentation right now, I’m blown away by how much is provided. These are legitimate, full blown alternative App Store APIs!

…guess it’s time to start rewriting AltStore 😅 https://developer.apple.com/documentation/marketplacekit

Screenshot of MarketplaceKit.framework documentation: Creating an alternative app marketplace Enable the distribution of other third-party apps from within your iOS marketplace app. Processing alternative app marketplace notifications Manage the addition and removal of apps that your alternative marketplace hosts on your server. People who are getting a Vision Pro on the launch date: What are you planning or hoping to use it for?

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I think that expecting anything than the iPad use case would be too much.

At the beginning of 2023 we started migrating our entire CI / CD setup at @shapedk over to GitHub Actions.

It feels good to wrap up the year having fully moved all of our iOS projects and since five minutes ago, we also have our entire setup extensively documented 😄 🙌

@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

I’m writing a big mobile #app and round-up for print early next year. If you’ve created something you think would fit the bill, let me know (or remind me, if you’ve emailed before).

Items need to be:

• New or significantly updated in 2023
• iPhone, iPad and/or Android

Android apps in particular are of great interest.

(All shares of this appreciated.)

asiergmorato,
@asiergmorato@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell We launched @FitWoody_Camp, a fitness app for iPhone and Apple Watch that adapts your goals depending on how are you today.

I migrated @IceCubesApp to the new Xcode 15 string catalog, which is fantastic! Also, shoutout to everyone who's keeping translations up to date! The new format is all in one file and readable without Xcode. It's even better to edit without Xcode. It should make things easier on the repo.

asiergmorato,

@dimillian @IceCubesApp Also, much easier to manage outdated or obsolete strings over time.
