@austincnunn@weird.autos

Former Oklahoman, now Marylander. Married to my best friend. I love weird project cars that are rarely finished, technology, and trying to love Linux as a desktop OS. Jr DevOps at Swappa, but words are my own.

I own a 1978 Chevy K10 :c10: that was my grandpa's, and that I learned how to drive in. I occasionally post my repair work to get it daily-drivable, with the hashtag #popstruck if you want to follow along. My wife and I are also working on a 1968 Mercury Monterey that was her fathers.

Hey it looks like a truck again!

Now I just need to figure out where I put the grill and bumper....

I’m in the process of rewireing my old truck, and for the first time in 2+ years, the original key works as it ought to. Headlights, front turn signals and front running lights are all working correctly, too. I can’t even begin to describe the joy I had when the truck started off the key and all of the lights worked first time.

I hate wiring, but damn is it satisfying.

Corporations: consumers need to reduce plastic usage to save the environment!

Also corporations: We should use 26 feet of plastic bubble wrap to package 2 bathing suits into an overly large box.

The ultimate kicker is that we can’t recycle this kind of plastic in my city. Neat.

(Please excuse the dog hair on the rug, it’s been a whole two days since we vacuumed)

EDIT: I have given up.

Guys, I'm feeling frustrated and stumped.

Sitting at my sister's home, I can use the WLAN easily. Lappy connects to it automatically.

But I have LAN (yes, a physical cable) in my guest room that would give me better speed. I plug it into the laptop - and it will not connect. I even gave LAN priority in the settings.

I cannot find a setting to tell it to use the darn ethernet cable. Where do I look?

Running Kubuntu / Plasma on an Acer Travelmate.

@Firlefanz if you disable wifi does it connect?

The apprentice is checking the quality of the new wiring for my truck.

Or possibly the box it came in, I’m not sure.

What’s the deal with conservatives’ weird fascination with Sydney Sweeney’s breasts? They act like they've never seen cleavage before.

@GayDeceiver @StefanThinks Theres nothing sexual about it - it's simple physics. Humans of all genders and sexual leanings enjoy playing with jiggly things.

@geerlingguy Just watched your recent video on the SimpliSafe doorbell. I'm curious - did you test the output of the power supply, both when idle and under load (streaming video, button pressed, etc)? I went through a similar, but less flammable, issue with a different doorbell cam where my brand new transformer would occasionally spike from the rated 18v to 48v (!!). The doorbell didn't suffer permanent damage, but it did reboot every time it happened. Apologies if I missed it in the vid.

People who don’t have a smart speaker in their house for “privacy reasons” but also use social media from their smartphone make no sense to me.

austincnunn,
@austincnunn@weird.autos avatar

@dan It’s just a straight ‘privacy’ thing to me - nothing about one company eavesdropping more than another.

IMO if you have a smartphone, it’s just as unprivate as any smart speaker thing.

@glennf Oh shit! Perfect (if late) gift for my wife.

Her father was a printer for most of his life, as was his father - who was the White House's official printer during the Vietnam War era, and who had a patent for a Matrix Inserter for Linotype machines. https://patents.google.com/patent/US3208582A/en?q=(marvin+abernethy)&oq=marvin+abernethy

Her dad had a full printshop in the basement of their house growing up, and he was teaching me how to run the Heidelberg before he passed away. Awesome stuff.

austincnunn,
@austincnunn@weird.autos avatar

@glennf Yup. She talks a lot about it when she reminisces. She had one of those baby swings that hung from a tree that he used to hang from the rafters while he was printing when he was on kid duty but still had to work. He'd stuff cotton in her ears so her hearing didn't go. 😂

Ordered a 4K Blu-ray drive on Amazon. Worked exactly as advertised, but it doesn’t do what I want -- to rip 4k HDR files off a disc and onto my computer. The firmware it came with firmly blocks this.

The latest firmware hasn’t been cracked yet and the leading devs on the issue don’t have an ETA for a workaround.

I ended up returning that drive and then I ordered a “cracked” drive from eBay. It’ll have an older firmware that should let me rip those glorious high-bitrate files.

@austincnunn@weird.autos avatar

@Dylan just do what I do and sail the 7 seas. Specifically Usenet.

austincnunn,
@austincnunn@weird.autos avatar

@Dylan Ive been ...borrowing... media from Usenet for ages. Ive got it pretty much automated with a few services, including a requester website that my friends and family use when they want something on my Plex server that I don't have.

Look into Sonarr (TV Shows) and Radarr (Movies), its what I use to keep track of my collections. I download with NZBGet. Ezpz. This is a pretty decent how to tbh. https://trash-guides.info/

austincnunn,

@lucasfreeman @glennf Can also confirm that Swappa shifts Mac Minis really well. I sold a M1 Mini in under 3 days for asking price a couple of months ago and it was a dream.

(Disclosure: I do work there, but we don't get special benefits for buying/selling)

Circling back to this Threads data usage subject...

Threads won't get any more data about you than any other fediverse instance. Because you are not using a Threads account you are not subject to their terms of use. You need to create an account in order to accept their terms of use. I'm no lawyer but this seems pretty clear to me.

austincnunn,
@austincnunn@weird.autos avatar

@thetolsonator @jcrabapple I like clean and minimal but XFCE reminds me of 9x/Me for some reason and I don't like that lol. I know there's themes and such but I can't get over the mental block.

I also have an OP computer and have the resources to spare for gnome, lol
