@drunkenmadman @shanselman just watched that whole video. Very well made, and does a good job explaining the issue. i just couldn’t help but think about Zoolander holding/using such a tiny microphone 😂

Every time I take an Uber, my driver is super chatty.

Every time I take a Lyft not so much. This morning I tried to converse like usual:

Good morning! How's your day so far?
"Good."

How has traffic been today?
::shrug:: "The usual"

Just starting your day?
"Yeah"

Been driving for Lyft long?
"Yeah"

Ok ... Dude doesn't want to talk. No way this will be an awkward 45 min trip across town...

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@ericmann he might have that exact conversation 10 times every morning because it feels natural to the passenger. Try some different questions.

🤔 How did you get started driving for Lyft?

What’s the best/worst neighborhood to drive in?

Did you read the latest news article about Uber?

Help me find a FOIL result for a FOIL I did not create.

I found this foil # for a record I did not request.
FOIL-2023-841-00845
This was how it was handled.

"Your request under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) has been reviewed and the documents you requested have been posted on the OpenRecords portal."

I cannot find the appropriate data set to find this result. All I know it was in 2023.

I may need a lava lamp to replace the Christmas tree. The house feels dark and dreary.

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@grammargirl A couple of years ago I decided that “Christmas lights “ should be called “Winter lights” because they should stay up even though Christmas is over. As long as it’s dark most of the day, keep the lights up.

Today marks 2 months I’ve been unemployed.

I also feel these have been the 2 least productive months of my life. I haven’t been able to get anything done around the house or on open source projects because pretty much every waking hour has been spent job-searching (except the late-night hours spent playing , as a break from job-searching).

I went last year — Met some great people, rocked some karaoke, and learned a lot. You should join us in Chicago for some good, nerdy fun.

I love when people complain that the cascade is what’s wrong with CSS. It’s almost like they don’t understand how the language works at a fundamental level.

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@cferdinandi it’s true! They don’t understand it. They abandoned the cascade when they switched to class based rules. the class was on the element or it wasn’t. They didn’t care that it bloated the HTML.

@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

project idea: Create an RSS feed just for you. Identify multiple data sources, Filter them by some criteria, then merge them into an RSS feed that only you read.

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@stevegrunwell @NetNewsWire it’s more like a feed creator. Instead of subscribing to a news feed with articles other people have written, you create a feed of your own design. You could pull data from multiple APIs. Maybe it’s an alerts feed. so you pull in weather alerts, server failures, and stock market dips and crashes. You would still subscribe to it like a normal RSS feed. So you still use NetNewsWire like normal

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@stevegrunwell @NetNewsWire bingo. I imagine this running on a server, so it can be accessed by any reader for flexibility.

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@beausimensen @stevegrunwell @NetNewsWire to me the customization is the special sauce.

Perhaps your favorite tech writer publishes their work on 3 different sites. You could subscribe to those sites and only pull out their articles into a custom feed.

I can see how it looks like 2 products, but there’s so much overlap. It could be whatever you want it to be though. I offered it as a project idea. It’d be great if multiple people ran with it. I’d love to see what each person does with it.

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@beausimensen @stevegrunwell @NetNewsWire Self hosting is a topic that I’m also looking into. There are multiple projects i want to make

Losing power has me waxing poetic about self reliance once again. Especially since power restoration fried my fiber connection (second time my ONT has been fried by a power surge, which is annoying since my ISP won't let me manage it or place a surge protector inline with it).

Thinking more about home power backups. But also ... what about the network? What if cloud hosts go down?

Tricky question:

If I want to move backwards deleting the last word I can ^W, however if the word is a filename with spaces like: this\ is\ a\ filename, it breaks at the word boundary because it doesn't see it as an escaped space.

shell-backward-word does seem to jump the the right place, but shell-backward-kill-word does not. (Maybe this is a bug?)

How do I improve ^W to do what we all expect?

Thanks!

@davidbisset getopt() is great when you want to create a CLI PHP script to support some options https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.getopt.php Sometimes you don’t want the overhead of Symfony Console
