Als gestern jemand fragte "wann habt ihr eigentlich das letzte Mal ein Backup eures Laptops auf ein Medium gemacht, das ihr nicht bei der dabei haben werdet", hatte ich nen Bonustask vor der Anreise gewonnen.

Aber: Backup ist jetzt in Salt konfiguriert und damit in Zukunft relativ einfach automatisiert auf neuen Kisten einrichtbar.

Und läuft gerade.

@scy Sometimes I envy companies who can just solve such "human issues" by making it a paid-for premium feature to have the ability to enable an insane amount of plugins/addons at the same time. This added income then pays for the support costs of explaining the users that they should use less plugins.

Idea: set up a volunteers and donation-run server hosting platform, where you can apply for a free VM or container if you do not have much money to play with these things. Applying & verification would involve a short conversation with someone to get an idea of the situation and the needs, and off it goes. Running a platform like that wouldn't be very different from running a mastodon server in terms of moderation, you'd need to find a bunch of folk that'd help but it could be mostly automated 🤔

@anthropy I suggest not doing that. You'd be prone to get scammed / misused by malicious actors. Also without verification through payment method, it will be difficult to do cheap identity checking, which makes the server owner liable in many countries for any shit that a user does on such a server.

it's cray to think that 512GB RAM sticks are a thing, and 1TB DDR5 ECC sticks are approaching rapidly, yet people are still in awe when you have more than 32gb RAM in your desktop/laptop

@anthropy with most consumer CPUs, you have a rather big performance hit in memory bandwidth once you go above 32GB RAM. Especially for games with huge image assets, this can be the bottleneck.

Are there more modern webservers than nginx in 2024 that you can recommend from personal experience? Or is it still a good choice?

And are there alternatives to a dovecot + postfix + rspamd mail server?

Or calendar servers you like better than Radicale?

@blinry Regarding the recommendations for Caddy or Traefik, keep in mind that they are a lot more heavy on CPU / slower than Nginx. If you only need a reverse proxy, maybe look into HAProxy.

I have a desk lamp that I got for free, it works just fine, gives plenty of light, easy to physically adjust to where I need light, etc

but the base near the on/off switch, gets smouldering hot, like easily 80C+. No idea why, it's far away from the actual light too. A short perhaps?

Now, if this were a 240v AC lamp I'd have gotten rid of it immediately, but, it's a 12v lamp with a 6 amp fuse. so it.. should be fine even if it breaks. And throwing it out feels like a waste.

What would you do?

@anthropy replace that wire which is either too thin or partially broken or has somewhat bad insulation. Otherwise the power supply of the lamp will probably die at some point in time.

Liebe Menschen auf chaos.social, eine kleine Info wegen der noch immer anhaltenden Spam Well. Leider können wir nicht viel machen, da Mastodon aktuell keine Features zur Spambekämpfung hat. Das frustriert uns auch. Leider scheint jede Instanz auch nur ein mal genutzt zu werden, sprich Limits oder Blocks ganzer Instanzen helfen nicht. Was wir aber sehen ist das Accounts die Follower Only und höchstwahrscheinlich auch Unlisted posten nicht betroffen zu sein scheinen.

@anthropy This is missing the imho best option:
[X] Fans & Airconditioning while specifically building the DC building so that hot air can flow out at the top while colder air from the outside (or from the top) gets sucked in thanks to chimney effect. Doing so makes the data centers from Hetzner be one of the most energy efficient and also cost efficient ones out there. Of course this only works in areas with not too many hot days (because these will then need more airconditioning)

@anthropy And luckily, for most applications it is okay if they are for example in a DC 1500 km away from you because your area has too many hot summer days and no big water body nearby to use as a heat exchanger instead.
So, build fewer but bigger and more efficient DCs. Don't build them near a big city, but instead build them where area and electricity is cheap. Need to put some fibers in the ground to reach it? Just do it - thats a one time cost.

I have a yearly donation budget of a few hundred that I need to spend, what (official, certified) causes should I donate to?

I've already donated some to Gnome Foundation, Wikipedia, Wikimedia, Mozilla, and KDE eV..

I was also looking at donating to Mastodon GmbH, but they don't seem to have fully filled out their Benevity profile, if anyone knows anyone I could contact I'd be happy to help them get into the system

Seit wann darf eine UG nach Spenden fragen? Du meinst doch sicherlich Schenkungen? Das falsch zu deklarieren kann hinsichtlich Finanzamt schnell dazu führen, dass ihr eine Strafe erhaltet und die "Spenden" rückwirkend zurücküberweisen müsst...

a) "for profit" ist völlig egal dafür ob ihr Spenden annehmen dürft oder nicht
b) Finanzielle Verluste haben nichts mit einer notwendigen Anerkennung als Gemeinnützig vom Finanzamt zu tun.
c) Auch eine gewerbsmäßige Liebhaberei (das trifft auf mastodon.de momentan eher zu wenn irgendwann länger als 3 Jahre existent) erlaubt nicht dass du das "Spenden" nennen darfst.
