Hacker. Lover of parentheses. Emacs fanatic. Just another person on the Internet with too many opinions.

Not the best, but pretty good.

I got to season 9 of Stargate and man I do not like Vala so far.

bbatsov,
@bbatsov@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin Oh, well - sadly the show is pretty weak in its final seasons. I'm a huge fan, but didn't really enjoy it after the departure of Richard Dean Anderson. The spin-offs were fairly weak as well IMO, although I did watch them both. No show should be allowed to continue after 5 seasons. 🙂

Yesterday I managed to attend the premiere of the Oscar-winning ”20 Days in Mariupol" in Sofia. Very powerful and moving documentary. Only now I realized that many of the photos and videos from the early days of the siege of Mariupol came from a couple of journalists, who took enormous risks to document the horrors that took place there.

I hope this movie will remind some people that the war today is just as brutal as it was 2 years ago and still needs all of our support.

I can never understand the people who use an analog face on a smartwatch. (e.g. Apple Watch) Digital faces are both more readable (legible?) and the natural choice for a smartwatch IMO.

bbatsov,
@bbatsov@hachyderm.io avatar

@jkxyz Most of the time I wear analog watches, so probably some of my aversion for analog faces on smartwatches comes from the there. Feels like cheating to me.

Btw, many digital watches/faces have relatively subtle ways to present seconds. (e.g. something filling up around the main time) Apple Watch's overview smart stacks screen is a good example of this.

bbatsov,
@bbatsov@hachyderm.io avatar

@jkxyz That’s why I’m hoping that health-tracking rings will become the next big thing down the road. :-) I have a smartwatch as well, but I rarely wear it, because I’m way too fond of old-school watches.

I’ve been tracking my sleep diligently for the past few months and it seems I sleep around 6,5 hours/day. (Not that I didn’t know this before, but now I have it on the record!)

How much do you typically sleep?

coders using project.el and not projectile -- how do you switch between test and implementation files quickly?

https://github.com/rags/toggle-test is a thing but no commit for 9 years, so I do wonder what's the rage in 2024

bbatsov,
@bbatsov@hachyderm.io avatar

@ctietze I think there was some package providing Projectile features on top of project.el, but I forgot its name. Probably this one https://github.com/mohkale/projection Obviously I won't be switching to project.el any time soon. 😅

OK this is a surprise. I have a new Mac laptop with a notch and I CAN'T SEE ALL MY MENUBAR ITEMS I MEAN WHAT? WHAT????

How is this even an idea for a UI?

bbatsov,
@bbatsov@hachyderm.io avatar

@robpike It’s bad UI for sure, but I noticed that in practice this rarely created issues for me. (I’ve been using a MBA with a notch for about 1.5 years) I guess I’m that I don’t use many apps with big menus and I’m now more selective of the items that show up in the system tray.

Also I just hate thinking like a hacker. "In what ways can I abuse this software in order to hurt someone else" is just not a mindset that I like to have.

I have absolutely no interest in ruining someone's day, let alone thinking about the different ways in which someone's day could be ruined, and in what versions

bbatsov,
@bbatsov@hachyderm.io avatar

@tenderlove I always think of “hacker” like this: “advanced computer technology enthusiast (both hardware and software) and adherent of programming subculture”. It’s a bit sad that pop culture (e.g. movies like “Hackers”) changed the meaning of the term for most people.

Other than this - totally agree with you.

Today we mark 2 years since the start of the brutal invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Remember Ukraine, its people, its heroes and their sacrifice. I hope they will prevail in the end! I also hope that the developed world will come to its senses and support Ukraine’s struggle fully and unconditionally . Ukraine’s victory would be a victory of democracy and freedom over dictatorship and oppression. And a major blow against the far-right movements that Russia funds all over the world. Героям слава!
