Spent the morning yesterday and today at the skate park with the kids. It feels good to be back on the board and spend some quality time with my kids. I might be old, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun still while getting some exercise :)

beepcheck,
@beepcheck@fosstodon.org avatar

@Unlogic right with you!

i picked it back up last summer when my kids showed interest. even here in Vermont (small state) there are a bunch of skateparks around and we hit them up several times a week.

my ollie is coming along... yesterday landed a few rolling shuvits. the kids are doing great with balance and basic ramp tricks. after two long beautiful days at a local park my legs are like dead logs, but it feels great!

‘‘‘Left’ and ‘right’ mean the same thing today that they’ve meant since the French Revolution. Ask someone, ‘What’s more important: property rights, or human rights?’ If they answer: ‘Property rights are human rights,’ they are on the right.’’

@strypey I'm not able to read every article, but in every "western" society property rights are a subset of human rights. as long as they do not supersede human rights in general both the "left" and the "right" can be correct in your straw man comparison.

beepcheck,

@strypey you last two comments ate spot on.

the rights of a property shall not supersede the rights of people.

@itsfoss i picked ubuntu 9.04 for a project because it was there.

i still use ubuntu, now as a daily driver for work and play. my wife uses ubuntu on her PC. my kids use it.

every now and then i dabble with debian, and i keep virt-manager installed to try things out, like kde neon for kde plasma 6 before it was fully baked, and nixos, which intrigues/confuses me.

Are there any fanless laptops out there that run Linux well?

beepcheck,

@thestrangelet @bignose @frameworkcomputer put it out of site and access it remotely... haha

if you're running a modern distro and what you're doing spools up the fans maybe fanless won't work anyway?

I think that senator (who probably should KNOW BETTER) should be asking the likes of GM to not cancel their Bolt EV, which, last time I checked, was a pretty good EV, instead of demanding a China ban.

While I won't be trusting China automotive output any time ever, a ban is wholly inappropriate. We need more incentive for the likes of GM to keep producing something that's competitive.

Someone needs to go back 50 years and read some history.

beepcheck,
@beepcheck@fosstodon.org avatar

@yakkoj it's there an open source EV CPU project?

i mean... it's motor and charge and climate control. this is a widely and often solved problem.

I'd love to buy hardware, and install open source hardware. i mean, isn't that what we do here?

Having a bunch of fun with this set up. It’s quick and easy to record piano sketches, and the ep-133 doubles as a funky metronome or full on drum accompaniment.

beepcheck,

@MattCrumpLab i have the EP-133 and it's fantastic.

it's so easy to put together a decent sounding beat that has enough variation to keep it interesting

@dantleech i see stuff like that from scientists and i kind of expect it.

that said i can appreciate not wanting to support any google products

Does anyone know of a reputable source for an article on using python -m

I recommend it to people but lack a credible source to back it up. Just had someone say that it's "not recommend or the convention. There are no benefits."

beepcheck,
@beepcheck@fosstodon.org avatar

@markwalker i use python -m [package] often!

  1. every time I set up a new dev space python3 -m venv venv

  2. in linux services when running things like fastapi and gunicorn

If you're running within a virtual environment you don't need to use -m as much because all the installed packages are at hand, like

~(venv)$ black .

vs.

~$ python -m black .

A Few Reasonable Rules For The Responsible Use Of New Technology

https://hackaday.com/2024/01/03/a-few-reasonable-rules-for-the-responsible-use-of-new-technology/

beepcheck,
@beepcheck@fosstodon.org avatar

@governa tl;dr

new technology should

1.not be used to shorten the lifetime of a product (looking at you Apple)

  1. not be used as an excuse to inhibit repairability (cough ... John Deere)

  2. not be tied to unnecessary services (like a watch that can't be set until it's paired with a phone and registered with the manufacturer)

  3. not be detrimental to the planet

that last one is a biggie... the ship is sinking, we need to stop drilling holes in it and start patching it up instead.

British wind turbines produced a record 21.81GW of power between 9:00am and 9:30am this morning. Over the past 24 hours wind turbines have supplied 61.7% of our electricity needs. Live data can be seen on my site at https://grid.iamkate.com.

After this second Beta, there will be two Release Candidates, one on the 10th and the other on the 31st of January. All these releases are not final, they are for testing and should not be used in production...
