I see free speech like the free market. Without rules, the powerful will always benefit. Moderation enables new ideas and less powerful communities to truly be heard.

@Downes Yeah, there was a second part I decided not to post, which is that we should be wary that every locus of control that can be abused will be abused.

Left my pizza dough to rise for four hours or so. Looking forward to breaking out the oven tonight.

Politics is not sports. Principles are far more important than allegiance.

Just so nobody gets it twisted: voting against fascism feels like a pretty good principle.

I’m no longer posting pics of my kid online, but maybe posting descriptions will work.

A toddler stares dispassionately into the camera, an entire whole waffle scrunched in his left hand, an immaculately cut waffle with blueberries on his plate in front of him, his bib speckled with maple syrup, his long hair hair sticky; his belly, though he does not care to admit it, is full. A tiny fork is cast aside, unused and unnecessary.

The way to save news is through radical experimentation, decoupling from tech platform interests, and creating more supportive, inclusive cultures that are more open-minded and inclusive. https://werd.io/2024/dispatches-from-the-media-apocalypse

If I was a nefarious software company, here's how I might be thinking about AI. https://werd.io/2024/the-ai-data-goldmine

I'm trying something new! Introducing Unoffice Hours: a little open time to meet and chat every week. Agenda optional; no ulterior motive beyond meeting new people. https://werd.io/2024/unoffice-hours

The biggest issue that’s turning up for me about AI is not the models, hallucinations, etc, but how leakily AI-enabled services share potentially sensitive data with third parties. Using AI to process or read aloud a confidential document? Guess what, a third party you have no control over has a copy of it now.

@guacamayan This exact thing came up for me yesterday. That’s exactly correct. The “offline” and system voices are safe; the others, not.

@davidpurdy yep, parsing and analyzing public data is a great use case!

I wrote up some thoughts about the things newsrooms need to do right now in order to survive the massive search engine and audience squeeze they're experiencing. TLDR: so much of it comes down to creating an open-minded culture of experimentation. https://werd.io/2024/dispatches-from-the-media-apocalypse

The thing about a political campaign centered around a notable fraudster with a published fascist platform that includes literal Nazi references in its media materials is that it's so outlandish to be unbelievable for most people.

They've been taught that America is better than this; that we're somehow exceptional; that it can't happen here. It's not; we're not; it is, in fact, happening right now.

Campaigners are in a tough spot. How do you make the message land when it sounds like a movie?
