1/ Hellish conditions on the front line in Ukraine have reportedly led to an upsurge in extrajudicial punishments in the Russian army, with soldiers being hanged, tied to trees for days, forced to rape each other, or thrown naked into open pits in freezing temperatures. ⬇️

and all this horror and brutality for what?

for the nostalgia and vanity of a cadre of mafia goons in moscow and st petersburg who want to revive past russian "glory"

we're the managers

at least we were, until enough decided not voting was cool

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@Natanox @Gustodon all very true. but the choice still matters. and if we are to fix our system, we need ranked choice voting to get viable 3rd party choices. and rcv is creeping in, mostly by democratic effort. meanwhile not voting or voting 3rd party gets us the death of any choice at all if the GOP wins. your heart has to be in the right place. but so does your mind

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@Natanox @Gustodon

ranked choice voting aka preferential voting

In the USA we have fptp voting, first past the post. look up duvergers law: due to our voting system we will always only have 2 parties

rcv allows for 3rd parties to grow stable and have a chance. it's in a few places now. Maine, new york city, etc. mostly due to democratic initiatives. so vote Democrat then insist on rcv

while not voting means GOP wins and then we don't even have democracy anymore

@AutisticMumTo3 @wcbdata @Natanox @Gustodon what is the "principle" that is supported by not voting? There is none that makes any sense. Nonvoters, their heart may be in the right place, but in their minds its just some lofty poorly thought out bit of naive idealism. Voting is not a love letter, it's strategy, and to just not vote and cede the country to forces openly out to destroy democracy is like saying "our food choices are bad so I'm going to let the guys who say we can't eat at all win."

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@AutisticMumTo3 @wcbdata @Natanox @Gustodon

if someone "really can't be bothered" what is the point of trying to appeal to someone that dissipated and ineffectual?

it's their responsibility to understand the stakes and vote

if there's ducks in the road and the person just floors their car because "they really can't be bothered" is this a respectable point of view?

the problem is these "really can't be bothered" folks are part of the reason why we don't have good choices in the first place

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

exactly!

ranked choice is creeping in, in mostly democratic areas

so if you want better choices, vote democrat, and tell them why you voted: to get ranked choice

then we get stable 3rd parties with ranked choice

not voting meanwhile gets us the GOP, then we'll never vote again at all

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @AutisticMumTo3 @wcbdata @Natanox @Gustodon you vote democrat to get ranked choice (since where we have ranked choice creeping in in the usa is mostly democrat areas), to get stable third parties. "why did you vote democrat?" you say "to get ranked choice." then they listen to you because you vote

not voting? no one is ever going to listen to you

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @jztusk @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

Yes!

You have cause and effect backwards.

Bad policies are not the cause of low voter turn out.

Low voter turn out is the cause of bad policies.

You have a social responsibility to vote. Oh woe is me, what a horrible burden.

Do you know how low voter turnout is? Do you know how much all the corrupt plutocrats destroying our democracy would crap their pants if we just f***ing voted?

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @jztusk @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

then you're only telling me you're naive because you don't realize how much worse things can get. and will get, if enough people don't vote

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @jztusk @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

so we just lost abortion rights

because trump packed the courts

because not enough voted in 2016

do you see?

what decisions are you talking about?

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @jztusk @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

so let's get rid of the electoral college, right?

how do we achieve that?

by voting!

"why did you vote?" "i want to get rid of the electoral college" "write that down bob, i'm hearing this alot, put it on the platform"

there is always a voice that is "everything sucks then you die waah". this is not reasonable this is emotional empty cynicism and learned helplessness. it's self-defeating. you're killing your own concerns

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @jztusk @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

"This has been a known issue for decades"

because voter turnout has been low for decades

"We need a new constitution"

and how do you get that? you vote

"just reinforcing my own disenfranchisement"

you are the cause of your own self dienfranchisement. when your rationale is exactly the cause of all of our problems

do you know what would happen overnight to all of our problems if people voted at a high turnout?

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @thesquirrelfish @AutisticMumTo3 @wcbdata @Natanox @Gustodon exactly my point: you vote democrat, because ranked choice is creeping into the usa (maine, new york city, etc) mainly by democratic initiative. so you vote democrat and tell them you did it to get ranked choice. then we get stable viable third parties

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@jztusk @thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

I'm so fed up with nonvoters and their clueless self-destruction my attitude nowadays is anyone who doesn't has zero right to complain about politics or policy. I blame our loss of abortion rights on them.

It's a straight line from your participation to your right to speak as a stakeholder in our government.

It's a social responsibility.

And not voting is a cause not an effect of bad policy.

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish

they didn't give up on you, you gave up on them. nonvoters and stein voters in 2016/ nader voters in 2000 gave us bush and trump

you are the rot in society that has given us all of our problems. MAGA is malice. you can fight malice. how do you fight airhead lack of care, weak learned helplessness, ignorant heartless cynicism?

i firmly and absolutely believe this: you are 100% the problem in american society

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish

your thinking is "well dems aren't good enough. so let's hand the country to the GOP by not voting"

this is what you're saying

you either realize it and so you're malicious towards the health of society

or you somehow do not understand something that is very easy to see

you don't care at all about what you say you care about

your "care" is "this is what i want and i want it right now and if i don't get perfection it let it all burn"

immature, self-defeating nonsense

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@thesquirrelfish @jztusk @wcbdata @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

you not participating changes what?

what you care about is patting yourself on the back with some entitled sense of superiority

but you're just telling the world you don't care about the real issues

you somehow think "biden demanding netanyahu knock it off" is the same as "trump telling netanyahu to do whatever he wants"

thinking "i don't care about better, i want perfect or i won't play" is immature

benroyce,
@benroyce@mastodon.social avatar

@jztusk @thesquirrelfish @wcbdata @AutisticMumTo3 @Natanox @Gustodon

I'm not noble. I'm just venting.

But venting at those who don't vote or vote 3rd party is fine because they are the source of our problems, more than MAGA. MAGA includes malice but they're mostly indecent ignorant zombies programmed emotionally.

And they can be defeated.

But to realize our problems yet sabotage change because of a vain ivory tower entitled self-regard to not "sully" their precious sense of purity is malice.

    As Peter Smith reports, though the Constitution doesn't mention Christianity or any religion at all, many Americans buy the myth that the US is a "Christian" nation founded by God. And a vocal minority who have the ear of the Republican party want to have the US declared a specifically Christian nation in which Christianity has privileged status.

    plenty of the founding fathers were Christian

    but a lot of them, i would argue the majority of the most influential, were skeptical of religion

    any semblance of education on the founding fathers, heck, the first part of the first sentence of the First Amendment, would show the USA was not founded as a Christian nation

    for many thinkers at the time, the aftermath of brutal religious wars in Europe were fresh on their minds, they were allergic to religion

    I'm gonna be honest y'all, it's felt dark lately, and for good reason, LGBTQ+ rights in the balance, an election coming up, women struggling to get basic Healthcare, mass shootings, SCOTUS, the environment. The list goes on and on, and the media twists everything to sound even worse, or just straight up ignores actual news. But here's the thing, I know a lot of you, and the fact that you exist in the world gives me hope. You care about the future and you want good things, and so do I, and as long as that spark is there, we have hope. So, let's focus on some good today! Share a good headline, some positive news either on a larger scale or just something personal, a nice picture you took, a funny meme or video, whatever made you feel good or at least, gave you a smile. Let's share some joy!
