@mathowie We've been enjoying a nearly identical version of this recipe for several years now, but I add roasted cauliflower to provide more nutrition and heterogeneity.
even though React has been my bread and butter for the last 5-6 years—and will continue to pay my bills for a long time—i wouldn't recommend starting a greenfield frontend project with in 2024.
the framework now has too many bugs, too much legacy, too many fundamental design flaws (e.g hooks), and is growing in a direction that nobody except Vercel cares about. the core team doesn't care about real-world scenarios, and is focused on building a product that's too clever for its own good.
i don't know what the alternative to React is, yet. but there's one thing i can say confidently: invest in HTML, vanilla JS, Web Components, and plain old CSS. they will outlast every frontend framework in existence.
🆕 blog post -- Early Black Friday deal drops the price of this excellent Chromebook Plus
Early #BlackFriday deals are here and one of them is for the very capable Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i #Chromebook Plus. Normally priced at $499, it’s now $379.
@kevinctofel Jeff Jarvis bought one and hated it so much he returned it. You can search his Mastodon feed, but he mentioned that it was glitching and the fan was too loud.
It just now took me ten (10!) tries to reword my request for Google Home/Assistant to play "Candide" by Leonard Bernstein before it played the correct composition. Almost as bad as Search is sometimes these days. No doubt the upcoming linkage of AI Bard to Home/Assistant will make things oh so VERY much better. Uh huh. Oh yeah ...
@lauren Part of the issue in getting the proper song to play lies in what the music service returns in response to what Google Assistant sends them as the requested song/album, artist, and/or composer. Google may screw up the first part, but I often see Spotify returning the wrong selection.
Got the latest covid booster and for the first time (every other covid shot wiped me out for 1-2 days) I feel perfectly fine a day later. Hopefully I wasn’t in a placebo control group!
Disturbing talk on Morning Joe, with two congressmen threatening to cut off federal aid to universities that do not 'crack down' on students' speech re Palestine & Israel. I'm not supporting what the particular students say; neither do I support such threats against speech.
@glennf It's a complete re-brand with a new app. Pepole notice big updates like this and probably wonder why it was changed. I truly don't understand this negativity, especially from a printing and type historian.
Now Bard is just trolling me. It won't let me use it in Workspace. It keeps switching languages. Now it switches to dark mode. Yes, the machine is sentient. And it's a jerk.
@glennf In a remarkable coincidence, I was just finishing an excellent YouTube video about Ariely's fraud as I read this. The horrifying kicker was that he continues to publish and remains at Duke
Looks bad but the Supreme Court has made clear, in decisions (Skilling, McDonnell, Percoco) and by conduct (Thomas, Alito), that bribery is legal, so 🤷♂️
Whoa, I had no idea Alaska Air was doing a sort of MoviePass thing, fly roundtrip every month for $100/mo?! Bummer it doesn't cover Portland, but I wonder how the economics work in Alaska's favor. Seems way too cheap. https://flightpass.alaskaair.com/
@dangillmor@daringfireball@ianbetteridge After watching Tim Cook grin from ear to ear as he proudly sat next to Trump at the White House, I have had very low expectations for Apple to do the right thing.
Moments after our German Shepherd completely shredded yet another doggie soccer ball, this butterfly landed. Was blown away by how closely they matched in color.
BTW, Google Images was pretty much useless in identifying this. Showed mostly a bunch of Etsy art. Pretty sure it's a Spicebush or Black Swallowtail.
@briankrebs My Google Lens search returned this link: https://bygl.osu.edu/node/528. Apparently it's a red-spotted purple butterfly (Limenitis arthemis astyanax).
Media coverage of this event is so interesting. First every headline highlighted the location: a BIKER BAR, as if one expects a mass shooting at such places, as if the location explained things.
But now it turns out the gunman was an ex-cop, hunting his ex-wife. The story isn't the location, it's the toxic masculinity, it's the spouse/partner abuse.
I’ve contributed to my state’s 529 education fund since 2005, in funds set aside for my kid, my nephews, and some cousins.
Last week they added the ability to send a tuition check directly to a registrars office for the first time.
Previously you withdrew via check to yourself, then paid a school bill, then kept all receipts for next year’s taxes when the IRS complained about you withdrawing funds.
When I started contributing in 2005, I assumed this feature already existed.
@mathowie Our state's 529 can send an electronic transfer directly to the school, but there's a $10 processing fee. Instead, I opt for the free direct -mailed check that takes two additional days to get there.
@taylorlorenz I use Google for work and personal searches throughout every day, and I continue to find it remarkably useful. These reports of deteriorating quality baffle me.
@kevinctofel The fact that you no longer need to worry about performance or reliability is kind of the point, isn't it? I welcome a world in which we don't need to think much about hardware or what it looks like, as long as it does what it's supposed to do over a long lifespan.
@chrismessina There's an alert from Monday (that Comcast hid in a way that makes it nearly impossible to find) that reads: "Comcast has been alerted to a potential scam directed at Comcast subscribers. Reports indicate a call is received, and the number appearing on the Caller ID is 844-201-3558. The callers identify as Comcast representatives and offer a promotion to upgrade the subscriber's service if they pay a large amount of money upfront over an uncommon payment method."
