What evil is Elmo distracting us from by having his pet robot come out and dance? Presumably an accomplice is picking pockets while we’re all watching. Like the shell games at Montmartre.

This George Street tram is useful, but IMO the CBD stops are too far apart. It's a fair walk if you happen to be halfway between some stops (eg QVB and Wynyard).

bigjsl,
@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni a consequence of thinking about a tram as a thing that travels between two places rather than a thing that moves people between places they need to be.

Nationals senator, Bridget McKenzie, and Liberal senator Dean Smith said “The Albanese government has failed to ensure travelling Australians are not taken advantage of by our airlines and instead have spent the past 18 months running a protection racket for Qantas who represent more than 60% of the Australian airline industry.” This is of course a completely different protection racket than the one the Coalition ran for the previous nine years from the Chairman’s Lounge. I hope Albo’s government legislate more protection for airline passengers but I would love to see concrete progress on building high speed rail between Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/feb/09/new-pay-on-delay-airline-flight-delays-bill-compensation-passengers-liberal-coalition-details

This is a great graphic that explains why green hydrogen is not the future of fuel for cars and possibly not the fuel for anything much else.

bigjsl,
@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@stib yes, absolutely, green hydrogen, made at point of consumption using lots of solar panels or surplus wind, makes sense for steel production. It won’t be as cheap as coking coal but there isn’t much choice. Hydrogen as fuel is a gas industry distraction.

bigjsl,

@mattdarveniza if the goal is to move 10,20&40 foot shipping containers there are better solutions than trucks driving on interstate highways but I suspect the future for regional trucking is electric or biofuels. Electric trains seem to work fine for freight in Europe and elsewhere. I remember being in the Indian Pacific ~40 years ago being hauled up the Blue Mountains by electric loco. Was changed for a diesel at the top. So once upon a time that was cheaper. Cheaper is the thing that causes businesses to change stuff.

An alternative explanation would be that Toyota has been caught flatfooted on EVs and their chairman has to say any old rubbish to avoid losing his job. Japan’s economy has been stagnant for nearly thirty years and Toyota is a big part of that.

bigjsl,
@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@Hypx Tesla claim their cars are cheaper to produce than ICE. This is why Chinese manufacturers have concentrated on them. Legacy car makers are milking the last yield from past investments. The near zero capital gains over the last 20 years for Toyota and Ford investors and the same for GM since their bankruptcy a decade ago are not convincing me they have a bright future.

    @DrALJONES just the small matter of a two thirds majority vote in both houses of Congress. This is a distraction. If the Democratic party loses that badly in November they deserve to be obliterated.

    @MisuseCase @DrALJONES yes, we find it unsurprising that our new left wing government is misidentified as right wing because they are so spineless they keep doing the same horrible things the previous Trump huggers did. But carry on. We love watching American politics.

    Humanity isn’t going to change trajectory on destroying the environment.

    “At least a quarter of the billionaires registered as delegates at Cop28 made their fortunes from highly polluting industries such as petrochemicals, mining and beef production, a new analysis has shown.
    The findings, revealed to the Guardian in an exclusive analysis of the 34 billionaires who are signed up to the UN summit, raise concerns about the influence wielded by ultra-rich, mega-emitters on the world’s efforts to tackle the climate crisis. Together the 34 are worth about $495.5bn.
    The high number of billionaires at the conference, along with the many private jets they flew in on, suggests Cop may now be second only to Davos as a gathering point for the world’s ultra-rich, who can meet and potentially influence government leaders and senior politicians and bureaucrats, while making deals with other business owners.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/12/one-in-four-billionaire-cop28-delegates-made-fortunes-from-polluting-industries
