Oh for goodness sake the homes mostly being built are unaffordable for all the people that need housing. The only way we can address the housing crisis is to overrule all council impediments to building and living in tiny homes. What the feds need to do is legislate against NIMBYism

@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@kcarruthers @joannejacobs @luciedigitalni the problem with apartments is government let strata managers and the actual developers profit from owners forever. $11k per year to pay for your share of maintaining a swimming pool and lift doesn’t make sense.

Every chance I've had to interact with satellite operators in conferences, I've asked them about their plans for dealing with solar storms (I'm particularly worried about Starlink, which requires dozens of maneuvers per day to avoid collisions. What if a large fraction shuts down for a few hours?!)

The universal response to my inquiries has been "Don't worry about that, it'll be fine!"

I guess we're going to find out very soon. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/

@sundogplanets like so many modern possible disaster things I bet the modern satellites just ride through this.

The Nationals Party.

They used to be the farmers party, but now they're more like the miners party. In fact, without the Liberals they'd would be just another minor party. They have less Senators in the upper house than The Greens. Their representatives in the Lower House only come from the QLD, NSW and VIC - if you can call all of them Nationals, Queensland doesn't actually have a Nationals Party, only the LNP - the Liberal-Nationals Coalition. They're a cowboy-hat-wearing bunch of fossil fools standing up for fossil fuels, pretending to be supporting the people on the land while supporting multinational mining companies who pay no taxes. I hope voters in this country can see right through them. They're nothing but a Liberal feeder party.

They're a joke.

Remember how Foxtel were selling Hubbl for half price and all the reviews said they are junk? Now Foxtel are giving them away to former customers. "We want you to be one of the first to experience Hubbl; Australia's newest transformative TV experience and right now, as a previous Foxtel Now customer, you can get a free Hubbl* (normally $99)."

Google to purge billions of files containing Chrome users' personal data… in the USA and I’m supposed to feel relieved, happy, positive about using Chrome? Might as post all your private data on Pastebin than use Chrome. Note well that this purging is for US users not Australians. Interesting article if you read it carefully. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-02/google-to-purge-billions-of-files-containing-personal-data-in-se/103657584

Some of the juciest data Google have been keeping is incognito mode browsing data. Remember they are only deleting this for USA users. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/1/24117929/google-incognito-browsing-data-delete-class-action-settlement

EU says ’s new security law could affect its status as a business hub - https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/20/eu-hong-kong-national-security-bill-article-23 "European Union joins chorus of criticism of Article 23, which includes harsh new penalties for offences such as insurrection, sedition and espionage" you bet

bigjsl,
@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@glynmoody the lack of rule of law has already affected Hong Kong’s status as a business hub.

bigjsl,
@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@glynmoody I know Australians working in funds management who have quietly moved to Singapore because they consider the risk from remaining in Hong Kong is way too high.

Air passenger data: Council and European Parliament reach provisional agreement to increase security and enhance border management - https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2024/03/01/air-passenger-data-council-and-european-parliament-reach-provisional-agreement-to-increase-security-and-enhance-border-management/ "API data will consist of a closed list of traveller information such as name, date of birth, nationality, type and number of the travel document, seating information and baggage information."

@glynmoody and somehow an AI will use that information to protect the safety of the aircraft how? Oh, of course, the biometric data.

This George Street tram is useful, but IMO the CBD stops are too far apart. It's a fair walk if you happen to be halfway between some stops (eg QVB and Wynyard).

bigjsl,
@bigjsl@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni a consequence of thinking about a tram as a thing that travels between two places rather than a thing that moves people between places they need to be.
