I am missing for the second year in a row, which upsets me greatly but worse, the universe is punishing me in the worst way possible. Help me I am in hell.

A video of a small fortune paper from a fortune cookie. The front reads "Every captain keeps his deck spotless." The reverse is one of the obnoxious and ubiquitous ads "Manscaping" which I wish would die in a fire.

@AngryAnt Yeah, I still get a lot out of it. And when I don't go it pains me because I feel like I'm professionally slipping (just because I'm not dedicating the time/money I want to for professional development in the way I want to, not because I think the specific event has universal value).

Much similar shit is of course on the internet but I cannot for the life of me pay attention to a youtube video in the same way I pay attention in a lecture hall.

At the risk of sounding like I don’t know what I’m doing:

I finally learned what “the Jacobian” of a function is. And so I finally understand that bit of BxDF math I always hand-waved.

(Quick version: it’s a matrix of partial derivatives of each output of the function with respect to each input. The determinant of this matrix tells you how much the function scales space; you can divide by the determinant to cancel out this scaling.)

@ataylor it took me a couple years of being in an astrophysics PhD to burn this into my brain, and the reason is because, like so many things in physics and math (my bachelors degree), it's named for some dead man instead of what it is/does. See also things like shear ("Kelvin-Helmholtz") instabilities in fluids etc.

My neurodivergent child had "a typewriter" on her gift list after watching Wednesday on Netflix, and my neurodivergent brother, who used to ask for things like "an hourglass," delivered and more, with this beautiful 1936-vintage Remington Noiseless Portable. Now I, the neurodivergent mother, am absolutely enthralled by it and how things like the shift key, dual-color text, and double-spacing were achieved fully mechanically. I used an electric a couple times as a kid but never a full mechanical.

My recent experience in the Kansas City airport has convinced me that one of the most effective resistances against bathroom laws is just making all bathrooms mixed-gender, like they prolly ought to have been in the first place. Fascists Hate This One Weird Trick.

Do you (a developer), when starting on a new feature, have a time box that magically scales to at least half a day, wherein you just stare at it while going "hmmm" before you even start?

Allegedly to plan, but as if by magic, you figure it all out right at the end of the slot of time (right before lunch / before going home)? Yet your brain does NOT let you skip this sacred staring-at-codebase time to the last 30 seconds of "let's just start here"?

    Unity question: Under what circumstances is it safe to delete the Library/ folder or the contents of the Library/ folder, within a project directory?

    @mcc @nicknicknicknick automatically. the folder includes the asset database, caches, etc. that determine if assets need reimporting. without it, a full reimport will be triggered.

    @mcc I had a labmate that was really into them. I gathered a large part of the unique sound is due to the instrumentation, the sax definitely has some non-standard things going on but also the bass is a two-string (possibly fretless? i don't recall) played with a slide. peak 120 minutes alternative rock, very good.
