I guess Cheeto head didn't check with the boss. Apparently Barron has "prior commitments".

I am old enough that I can remember Eliza running on a friend Apple ][e.

And how, once you got past the novelty of having a computer "talk" back to you, it quickly became boring and repetitive, to the point it was funnier to trick Eliza into saying ridiculous things than it was talking to it.

All of this to say: I am not impressed by the latest LLM. They are superficially smarter than Eliza, but not by much.

@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ParadeGrotesque I remember using Eliza on a 110 baud teletype so my computing history goes farther back. I am impressed with LLMs but I see it as just another advancement in the computer chronology not some pre-cursor of the apocalypse.

The Vision Pro VR -- oops, I mean "spatial computing" (oooh!) -- headset is $3500 dollars. Uh, yup. I don't expect to be trying one of those anytime soon.

briansullivan,
@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@lauren Prescription glasses another $149 (if you need them). I am guessing you might be able to try without buying if you have a friend with money (and perhaps an Apple fetish).

Complex and interesting product though.

@punklawyer The notion that it is “free” is wrong though (also living in a country with similar universal health care).

It is really high value for low cost health care.

briansullivan,
@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@simon_brooke @punklawyer I'm fully aware living in a country that has such a system. And universal health care is still in a very real sense insurance as my son who is an actuary in an insurance company often points out.

briansullivan,
@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@simon_brooke @punklawyer What the insurance company does though is using your term "socialize" the cost so yes the universal aspect is different but from the spreading of cost it is the same.

briansullivan,
@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@simon_brooke @punklawyer I am definitely not arguing in favour of the American system. I think it barbaric.

briansullivan,
@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@simon_brooke @punklawyer It was somewhat "revolutionary" in the middle of the 20th century I guess. The only place I think it is currently considered so present day is the U.S.

So painful to watch the famous poppies scene from "The Wizard of Oz" and realize all that white "snow" falling on the actors, covering their bodies, no doubt being breathed in, was ... asbestos.

briansullivan,
@briansullivan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@lauren I remember fake Christmas tree snow sold as fireproof and made from asbestos liberally used as a kid.

HP sued (again) for blocking third-party ink from printers, accused of monopoly

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/hp-sued-again-for-blocking-third-party-ink-from-printers-accused-of-monopoly/

Suit seeks injunction blocking HP from bricking printers using third-party ink.

I have had Epson do this to me as well — after an update the printer was bricked.
