Jesus fucking Christ, if users of distros aren't just the most insufferable people on the goddamned planet. The absolute epitome of the pathetic "excuse me, but I use Linux, BTW" type of "personality" that literally everyone hates.

Every possible moment they can mention it, every single thread, every fucking day.

No one, and I mean literally no one other than your little online "friends" cares about whether or not you use fucking or .

  • bubstance,

@reginagrogan In this case, and with this particular sentiment specifically, it may be helpful to remember that we are looking backwards through the filter of time.

There were far more men "back in the day" who were not great thinkers or emotionally intelligent people, and even some of those great thinkers still would evaluate your opinion as "lesser" than theirs purely because you are a woman. There were far fewer creatives than men raised to be soldiers or farmers.

The sad truth is that many people simply don't know how to communicate with someone who they feel is attractive or beautiful, even if they are not pursuing sex and especially if this same person has low self-esteem. Some men will retreat into the most timid and "please don't see me as threatening" demeanor and others will do exactly what you continue to experience.

You're correct: many men (and people in general) do not do any form of self-reflection. The people that do may just assume that you don't want to interact with them in any way.

Do you know that the AirPod max headphones do not power off?

There’s no way to power them off. They are perpetually on, just in low power mode.

There’s no off. It’s even in the docs. What the fuck?

    They’re hot. They’re pink. They’re apple. They’re… mass ?

Trying to decide what to do, - thoughts?

    Noise cancellation is croosh tho

    bubstance,

@reginagrogan Aw man, it's almost like Apple is a dogshit company or something.

    bubstance,

@reginagrogan In all seriousness, though: I would see this as an excuse to wean myself from the Apple "ecosystem" if I were in it.

Too many anti-consumer moves to be trustworthy.

Is there a website where I can find and browse to common (built-in) tools? 🧐

Like dog for dig, duf for df, or glances for htop/top.

So I've been using the editor from more and more lately, but I just can't deal with the bright colors all the time. After some messing around, I ended up tweaking the theme to one based on the default colors of the window manager, and now I present:

  • bubstance,

    @amyfou Oh boy...

So yes, there are technological and idealogical differences between each distribution, but in terms of specifics you asked:

Who has the cool cred? The "hard" or "minimal" distros, generally. Stuff like Arch, Gentoo, Void, NixOS, CRUX Source Mage, etc. Not to say that there's anything actually difficult about using any of them (outside of maybe NixOS), just that those are what get you the real "internet cool points" based on their perceived difficulty of use. Bonus Stallman points if the distro is FSF approved, of course.

Oldie-but-goodie? Stuff like Debian and Slackware. Old crusties who like things to stay consistent (for the most part). Slackware is definitely more of a "vintage UNIX" crowd and on the older side.

As for the actual communities, those can be as diverse as the distros themselves. Arch can be mean, Gentoo people want to help, Linux Mint wants to get people switched over and comfortable, etc.

There's always something so satisfying about setting up an encrypted multilib system and then successfully upgrading the whole thing to -current without breaking anything.

    wx1g, to debian

About to upgrade 142 packages in Trixie. Wish me luck! LOL!

    bubstance,

@wx1g @simendsjo Forgot to post my findings yesterday:

The installer for Guix System 1.4.0 is basically the same as I remember it from a few years ago; boots almost immediately into an ncurses menu for locale selection and it takes another few screens to get to the option for a shell. No other assistive technologies built into the installer itself outside of what's in the kernel, so a blind installation is doable over a remote connection after that point, but would likely be a hassle to get going without additional help from a sighted person.
