My piece with Nate Fast in HBR on generative AI and productivity is out today! I'm really proud of this piece, and I'm hoping it moves the conversation forward in this vital area. Also we violate Betteridge's law with this headline 😁

First snow of the season!🎉Accompanying the lovely scenery was some great talks for my ! (1/10)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

First was a fabulous panel on antitrust and political liberty at the @stiglercenter with Francis Fukuyama, Nolan McCarty, and Zephyr Teachout. This conversation gets into the original conception of antitrust, how purely mechanical, economic approaches have diverted from this conception, and how to move political power back into the arena. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6a3pt17h7I0 (2/10)

@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was an interesting talk by Tarek Ghani on using Afghan corporate phone records to study how firms respond to insecurity at the CEPR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga3y1QS9RiY (3/10)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was an intriguing talk by Claudio Labanca on monopsony in online labor markets at Monash Business School https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wxZafKWdSg (4/10)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was an excellent talk by @cfiesler on ethics and education for data science at the Vermont Complex Systems Center. Fiesler brilliantly lays out the case for why ethics has always been a part of computer science, how ethics should be integrated into training, and more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nevMXFkTQvY (5/10)

Another wild day, but I was able to find time to listen to some talks for my ! (1/8)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

First was a great talk by Sule Alan on improving workplace climate in large corporations with a randomized intervention at CEPR. This is a good demonstration of the powerful short-term effects of training, although as discussed here different interventions may need to be repeated to continue improvement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yntAoUYOFqY (2/8)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was a fantastic talk by Noah Askin on how collaboration leads to novelty in popular music at the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems. Using Spotify data Askin shows how musical collaboration is a significant predictor of various novelty metrics via access to diverse ideas and/or exposure to creative alters. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFlHYr6MzZs (3/8)

I had a great last day of 2023, accompanied by some great talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist (a top 10 tag on hci.social for 2023)! (1/5)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

First was the Journal of Accounting Research 2023 conference. I particularly recommend the last talk of the first day by Aneesh Raghunandan on how OSHA's response to workplace safety violations reduced incidents for that firm in that state but tends to relate to increased violations for that firm in other states.
Day 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R0ZsC-xgAo
Day 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpP7m8hpv5A (2/5) #economics #accounting

Next was a powerful talk by Randall Akee on the economics of indigenous peoples and institutions at the Bahujan Economists seminar. This is an excellent overview of the challenges and disparities that confront many indigenous populations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRMyv-ltdWo (3/5)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was a fantastic panel on the integration of privacy and antitrust at CEPR with @johnnyryan, Dina H. Srinivasan, @jasonkint, Simeon Thornton, and Alessandro Acquisti. While this panel is from a few years ago, the topics they cover are still very relevant, and Acquisti presents compelling evidence of the unmeasured costs of privacy violations. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6QawAyAKRk (4/5)

This is how you buy some of the best Alpine cheese: there is a small fortune in cheese (and some butter and yoghurt) in this fridge with payment based on just trusting your customers to leave the money in a post box 🤩🧀

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

@vicgrinberg Similar to in Japan how during the pandemic a bunch of storefronts opened up that have freezers full of gyoza and other foods. This is in downtown Kyoto. Just a box to put money in. The one time someone stole from one it was a national news story

bwaber, to Law
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was a fantastic panel on the relationship between the generative AI boom and infrastructural power/competition at the NYU School of Law with Angelina Fisher, Kevin M.K. Fodouop, Shaoul Sussman, and Sarah Myers West. There's healthy debate here on a variety of topics around the industry, centering mostly on the importance of massive compute and the idea of regulating firms in the area like utilities. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRssOS7HZlg (3/9)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was an incredible conversation with Richard Whish on the goals of competition law, the DMA, and more. Whish provides a refreshing view on the nature of competition law, the limits of technical definitions of markets and competition, and calls for some much needed common sense in applying the law here. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12Zja1dRjBc (4/9)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was an interesting talk by Jose P. Vasquez on regional unemployment and welfare effects of the China shock on the US at the CEPR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_ibk7Ne0Ug (5/9)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was an informative panel on proposed changes to German competition law and how they square with the DMA with Sophie Gappa, Rupprecht Podszun, and Assimakis Komninos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_Xt0tR7G68 (6/9)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was a nice panel on regulating generative AI transnationally at the NYU School of Law with Gráinne de Búrca, Angela Huyue Zhang, @MarcRotenberg, and Yirong Sun. I think the panel was far too credulous of China's regulatory attempts here (IMO Anu Bradford has one of the clearest takes on China's aims with AI regulation), but it provides good perspectives on the state of play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx10Bc-G65U (7/9)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Next was a great discussion with @CompetitionFlaneur on the EU's DMA vs the UK's Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers bill. To borrow a phrase from Richard Whish - the DMA and DMCC aren't brothers, but they are first cousins - and this conversation gets into the details https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNooF4xBnaQ (8/9)

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

Last was an intriguing panel on challenges to law, jurisdiction, and governance in virtual worlds at the Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub with Bertrand de La Chapelle, Eugene Volokh, Rob Currie, and Thomas Campbell. I would've liked more reference to video game regulations, since MMORPGs check a lot of the boxes discussed here and are a well-developed market, but there's still a lot of insight here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh7rLzUKedo (9/9)
