feels like the fact that a defence analyst was allegedly planning to blow up an energy substation in australia "with the intention of advancing the ideological cause of white nationalism", per prosecutors, and had made 3D weapons hasn't gotten a lot of attention https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/may/09/artem-vasilyev-guns-explosive-chemicals-found-adelaide-alleged-terror-plot-cherry-gardens-ntwnfb?CMP=share_btn_url

this is hilarious. OpenAI, whose GPT model was trained on news publisher's data without permission, is now offering those same publishers to link back to their reporting in exchange for legal access to their back catalogue.

It's like stealing the Coca-Cola recipe, producing your own rip-off version, then offering to credit Coke in your ingredient's section on the can as long as they get access to all the company's other drink recipes too. Geez, thanks!

The Facebook post with the most interactions from Australian users in the last week is a AI generated image of children wearing vegetables shared by a WA-based antiques Facebook page (1450,000 likes, 54,000 shares). Seems like most commenters think it's real

I've been thinking about this from mid-2022 recently. Without a lot of people noticing, we've moved on from the social web era

Off the back of news that Australia is spending a billion to buy a quantum computer, InformationAge's Casey Tonkin reported on rumours in November and quoted one of Australia's leading experts saying it was a "ludicrous waste of money" 👀 https://ia.acs.org.au/article/2023/australia-to-buy-quantum-computer-from-us.html

The Queensland Government made an AI-powered "Virtual Veteran" chatbot for ANZAC Day who pretends to be a 19 year old WW1 vet called Charlie

And, predictably, people are jailbreaking through its guardrails to make it say things that are not in character.

Actually it was because we didn't like that a random dude could just decide to go and slaughter 35 people. And here's an interesting fact: it worked.

INTERNET ETIQUETTE QUESTION: Is it cringe to crosspost? I feel like posting to multiple platforms has a bad reputation but with the splintering of Twitter's audience to Threads/Mastodon/BlueSky/LinkedIn/Twitter survivors etc. has this changed?

Microsoft Bing's built-in AI wrongly claims that Benjamin Cohen was identified as carrying out the Bondi Junction attack.

It cites a website that wrote about (false) Twitter rumours and a 7NEWS YouTube video that's no longer available.

  1. It's not super well known that Martin Bryant was an anti-Semite. Here's an excerpt from Carol Altmann's 2006 book After Port Arthur.

It’s not a surprise either that some of the loudest defenders (who wrongly claim that he didn’t commit the attacks) were also Holocaust deniers 4/4

Have you seen those those bizarre, viral AI-generated images of mostly white guys at a BBQ doing salutes to the Australian flag?

They're actually propaganda produced by far-right campaigners for a white nationalist "Australia Month"

From Karratha to Busselton, councilors — who were advised by their group Stand Up Now Australia to hide their fringe beliefs — hope to use their influence to stop drag story time and 15 minute cities.

Zero. And, according to the privacy commissioner, that’s the agency’s “regulatory strategy” https://www.crikey.com.au/2023/10/24/data-breach-no-fines-australia-privacy-information-commissioner/?su=OEdlUmpkQ3ZUQ2RlZzErMk1HNWRKZz09
