Quick reminder: Brian Mulroney's career in politics ended when he was caught accepting bribes frm an arms dealer.

I used to use three asterisks for scene breaks inside a chapter. But Unicode offers many more choices. For my SF stories, I use rocket ships:

For my modern fantasy story, I found pentagrams:

I'm giving another try.

I like Mastodon, except that my friends aren't here. I went to a panel at about social media and the answer to my question about what works these days is there is no one place. Facebook sucks because algorithm. Some people are on BlueSky. I may have to investigate TikTok (BookTok).

My plan is to talk about writing on Mastodon, promote (link to) on BlueSky, keep in contact with FB people, maybe mini-readings on TikTok. We'll see how it goes.

Had my first run-in with Facebook's blocking of links to Canadian news sources. I tried to link to a CTV story & my post just didn't appear. No notice, no warning. Just silently didn't appear after submitting.

Thanks Bill C-18!

canfaniac,

@syntaxseed Facebook is trying to pressure Canada by blocking links. Canadian news organizations need ad revenue to stay in business, but Facebook and Google just want to scoop up the content and keep all the advertising for itself; they don't want anybody leaving their walled garden. Facebok has become less useful, which is why we're spenign more time on Mastodon. We should support Canadian journalism and Canadian content.

Showed up at the event to support kids in schools. A far-right group had organized an event against letting kids go to the bathroom or being safe in schools, but several organizations showed up. We outnumbered and outlasted the far-right people. Wednesday at 9 AM is not my thing, but I wasn't asleep so I shoed up. There were about a thousand people when I got there and many showed up after me.

Dear : Want me to subscribe to MGM+? You have one thing I want: . Sell me that and you can have my money. This worked for + with , in case you were unclear how this works. You need a product.

canfaniac,

@brennansv @curmudgeonaf
Yes. I'm not going to say no to having them toss a few crumbs our way, but I want a new series all the time. Star Trek recently had five series running concurrently; I'd be happy with one.

Lost in the breathless, non-stop coverage of Biden’s age is the fact that most of Trump’s former cabinet members are literally warning us he’s mentally and temperamentally unfit to serve again in office.

Press, stop creating a false presidential competency issue, like you did a false email server issue. Just stop it.

***** The Internet age verification nightmare *****

Democrats and Republicans alike, via bipartisan federal legislation, are pushing for an Internet where EVERYONE has to be fully identified via government ID to use social media (and that we can be sure will only be the starting point, expanding to anything "not suitable for children" in short order. And of course, that's what any politician declares it to be).

Despite claimed safeguards, the identify information is bound to be correlated between sites, eliminating any kind of compartmentalization between the different kinds of sites you use. Make a comment on a tech site? Ask a question on a medical site? It will all be brought together into your government profile eventually, because of the government ID requirements. And eventually it will be hacked and leaked.

Many people are missing the insidiousness of these legislative pushes -- a federal one now being heavily promoted in TV ads -- because they usually frame their arguments in terms of requiring parents to give permission for children to use social media, authenticated by government ID proof of age.

But in order to do this, EVERYONE has to be required to use those government IDs for access, even adults who don't have or never have had children. Otherwise, there's no way to prove that any given account creation request isn't being made by a child.

It's bad. Very very bad. And both parties are complicit. -L

So leader announces their top priority is to reverse 's carbon reduction policy. No clearer way to show they are in they are in the pockets of the legacy fossil fuel industry. The reality is that the carbon rebate gives most people money back; only big polluters pay more than they get back. Canada has the biggest problem with greenhouse gases because of geography, but also the best policy to reduce GGs.
