If you walk through the streets of San Francisco between midnight and dawn, you can hear the echo of the redwoods still calling the deep fog from beyond the golden gate. Every old Victorian along those hills was built from their lumber, and the burgundy bones still sing to the mist.

Sometimes, if the moon is just right, you can slip back into the deep green halls, before the Gold Rush, and hear the laughter of the Ohlone and Miwok as they ran through the giant ferns beneath the trees.

@Crazypedia tactical solution - reverse inquisition.

If you feel your seeming beginning to slip in the midst of it all and you're on the spot, turn the conversation to them. "What a lovely X! Where did you get it?" "Sweet ride, what's under the hood?" "Crazy hot weather we're having today, ey?" "Can you believe [insert local sports team here] won't make the playoffs?"

This ceases your energy expenditure, normalizes you back to their frequency if you let anything untoward slip, and you can simply smile and nod as the Inquisitor small-talks its way to exhaustion. It also gives you the opportunity to disengage cleanly "Whoops, better get back to work - this is due at 5!"

Strategic solution - work from home and invoke ritual protection magick before every Zoom meeting.

“The principle factor in my success has been an absolute desire to draw constantly. I never decided to be an artist. Simply, I couldn't stop myself from drawing. I drew for my own pleasure. I never wanted to know whether or not someone liked my drawings. I have never kept one of my drawings. I drew on walls, the school blackboard, odd bits of paper, the walls of barns. Today I'm still as fond of drawings as when I was a kid - and that was a long time ago - but, surprising as it may seem, I never thought about the money I would receive for my drawings. I simply drew them.”

@gbmarian This is the source of the misconception:

The Temple was established in the United States in 1975 by Michael Angelo Aquino, an American political scientist, military officer, and a high-ranking member of Anton LaVey's Church of Satan. Dissatisfied with the direction in which LaVey was taking the Church, Aquino resigned and – according to his own claim – embarked on a ritual to invoke Satan, who revealed to him a sacred text called The Book of Coming Forth by Night. According to Aquino, in this work Satan revealed his true name to be that of Set, which had been the name used by his followers in ancient Egypt. Aquino was joined in establishing the Temple by a number of other dissatisfied members of LaVey's Church, and soon various Setian groups were established across the United States.

That being said, worshiping storm gods in an attempt to persevere against chaos is often a self-defeating enterprise. In my humble experience, they're much better at channeling the energy of chaos than calming it.

caribouslim,
@caribouslim@pagan.plus avatar

@gbmarian I figured as much, it posed a question in my mind when I watched your video (which has some interesting energy sigils within the musical intonations), and as such inspired the research - which led much deeper, into the Hyskos and eventually Baal, so I definitely appreciate the inspirational nature of your post and the curiosity it engendered.

I haven't directly worked with Set, although Ra showed up one time after a Hekate Solstice ritual I attended, and as per his rather one-minded personality, managed to cause a lot of collateral damage in the process. It wasn't until I tracked down the original piece of paper that the ritual leader had written the summoning on and burnt it that he decided to take off (apparently for that ritual, you're never supposed to write down the words, only recite them, but this guy had a poor memory and needed notes).

My opinion of storm gods comes from a working relationship with mostly the more traditional European sources (Odin, Zeus, Dagon). They're great for a burst of power when you need it, but they're not very useful for work that requires a gentle touch. That being said, given my readings of the energy patterns behind the music in your video, Set appears more disciplined - like a charged circuit rather than a bolt of lighting.

Of course, this is coming from the point of view of a chaos shaman, so take it with a grain of salt. I tend to converse rather than worship or conjure, and most of my experiences reflect that.

Thanks for the link - been going through your blog, but it's a bit difficult to find the posts that reference the Temple of Set. If you have a direct link to the blog posts you're referring to, it would be much appreciated.

caribouslim,
@caribouslim@pagan.plus avatar

@gbmarian when I initially saw your post, it didn't have the additional information regarding chaoskampf. Thank you, and I agree with you that the overall "struggle against the beast" theme recurring in storm god mythology isn't a new phenomena. Thanks for the links you just sent as well - I'll be reading them at the end of this note.

In my initial comment, I was more referring to how storm gods affect my personal practice when they offer assistance, as opposed to their purpose and positions within their respective pantheons. The net effect is lots of energy, but a significant lack of subtlety and gentleness - making them unsuitable for healing, and often their personalities and strong desires make them unreliable for divination.

caribouslim,
@caribouslim@pagan.plus avatar

@gbmarian excellent writing, and the most in-depth analysis I've read regarding the split within the LaVeyan Satanic Church. I also appreciate how you analyze the influence of historical nazism and how it perverted many of the concepts behind Norse mythology. I've studied many of the writers you reference (Blatavasky in particular) and agree with your assessment of both of the "left hand path" and her use of it to demonize competing traditions.

I'd like to draw out this quote:

For Aquino and his followers, the problem with conventional religion is that it stifles the powers of the mind, leading to a total dissolution of consciousness after death.

I'm curious if this is also a belief of the LV-426 tradition.

caribouslim,
@caribouslim@pagan.plus avatar

@gbmarian I'm very familiar with the Gnostics and have studied the Nag Hamadi in great depth - I can see the parallels in your philosophy. As someone who comes from and cares for a line of people who have unusual sensitivities (often classified as disabilities), I appreciate the distinction you make from the narrow-minded attitudes of the Temple of Set.

One of those who I care for has the mind of a five year old, but the heart (and body) of a giant, and it's been amazing to watch him use that heart to bring joy to those around him - he has more friends than I ever will. Another is trapped in a constant battle with a tulpa born of her trauma, but when she lays down the sword and picks up the pen, magick flows out onto the page... and when she sings, she can break your heart into splinters and weave them into stars.

Caring for them has made me a far better person than I'd ever be on my own, and the process of learning to understand them has provided far more spiritual guidance than any religious text I've studied.

"During the Weighing of the Heart, we are not judged for how smart or powerful we are, we are judged for how well we uphold Ma'at (truth, justice, compassion, reciprocation, etc.) in all of our affairs."

Agreed - I believe that intelligence is a tool, but the heart holds the true path for the soul.

Thanks for taking the time to respond in such detail, you've giving me a much richer sense of your traditions and practice.

@lydiaconwell

Your instance only updates its records for accounts on other instances that are actively followed. If you look at someone who is on a separate instance that hasn't been followed by other members of your instance, the server grabs the default view of their account for you to choose to follow.

It doesn't actually update your servers records of the other account until you, or someone on your instance, follows or interacts with the foreign account. Once you follow that account or reply (interaction), your instance maintains that record, and updates live from the other instance when viewed.

As such, each cross-instance follow is a bridge between instances, but if no one has built the bridge yet, all that's available is the first stepping stone.

I've also noticed that follower counts can be wildly off for remote accounts, often showing at 0 when first viewed, when on their server they'll have dozens of followers. The only accurate count of followers is from the account's own instance.

Only mentioning this as it took me near a month to test and figure it all out.

@13thFloor This one is for Cartoon Danny.

A not very long time ago, when I was on a shamanic calling, I ended up on the streets of Ashland, beneath the Sisikyous. I didn't know why I was there, other than the town is nexus of leylines that meet like a spiderweb, which turned out to be quite good at catching wanderers between worlds.

One of these wanderers was Cartoon Danny, a tall burly man nearing his seventies, with a burst of frizzy white hair and a top hat always adorned with flowers. He took care of a group of street kids, and I ended up becoming friends with him during the weeks I was there. He was huge fan of cartoons, especially Felix the Cat, and often channeled old cartoon characters in a high squeaky voice for much longer than was socially acceptable. Despite being homeless, he always had a bag of candy that he'd share with those around him, and he always carried a broom to sweep up after everyone.

Turns out Danny had been in Vietnam, commanding a unit that had huge morale problems due to losses to the Vietcong, until one night, one of his guys managed an insane night-time sniper killing streak. When he talked to the guy about it, the man admitted he was on LSD.

Danny was astounded at the effect, and started letting his guys take it to up their edge in the jungle. It was an amazing success, but Danny's superiors weren't happy with his methods after they found out. His units' activities were classified, and he was transferred to a desk job for the rest of the war.

When I heard this story, I responded "Holy shit! Have you seen the Men who Stare at Goats?"

"Whadda fuck is that?"

After the war, he ended up as a beat cop in San Francisco, and immediately ran into trouble again, as it was the summer of love, and he wasn't interested in busting people for smoking weed or dealing LSD. As a result, he was eventually kicked off the force, and he started a career panting windows.

He had ended up on the street in Ashland after his RV broke down in the mountains, and was towed before he could fix it, leaving him stranded for at least 2 years when I found him, partying every night and drinking as much as possible with the group of street kids he looked after.

One of those nights, I came around the corner to find him collapsed on the ground, lips blue, his kids screaming and calling 911. He'd done a hit of fent with them and collapsed.

The kids were freaking out, so I took the phone. The kids had given him liquid narcan and rolled him on his side (to keep possible vomit from choking him), but he wasn't responding and they were too high to listen to the 911 operator.

The operator told me to roll him on his back so the narcan could drip down his throat. Once this was done, like Lazarus, he started breathing and woke up just as the paramedics arrived.

After he was released from the hospital, I kept watch over him until it was time for me to leave Ashland. When he asked me why I was always hanging around, I responded

"Don't you get it man? There is nobody else in the world like you. You have shown kindness through all sorts of horrors, and you care for those around you even when the world has taken everything from you. Yeah, you're a drunk and a goofball and an addict, but you're a good person who's giving out kindness to those who need it most. You're the kind of person who makes the world a better place to be in. Why wouldn't I want to protect that?"

While he still drank during our time together, I never saw him hit the oxy or fent again. I hope he's still out there someplace, sweeping up after his street kids and tossing out candy with his Cartoon Danny cackle, fresh daisies tucked in the band of his battered top hat.

My daily morning tarot cards usually take on the lighter, more mundane meanings, so even when I get Death or The Tower, it's never that bad. The one I'm really afraid of in a daily pull is The Hanged Man, dude fucks with me every time. I wonder if this is the same for others?

caribouslim,
@caribouslim@pagan.plus avatar

@Cat_LeFey Now that's a mighty interesting deck. I can see how it inspired the Rider/Waite version, but this one is considerably denser and richer in composition. I'm noting how the linework in the imagery is all curvature, drawing sigil patterns behind the imagery. Even the sword tips are rounded, and note how the swords are all sheathed save for the knight's? That's a sign that the artist was much more cognizant of protection in divination than later artists.

There's some very interesting potential energy patterns behind that linework - traces of the golden spiral. The combination of cards is going to create a natural fractal subconscious resonance as your eye traces the linework beneath the images. You're right - this thing is a beast under the hood - but it's got one helluva plush interior. I think I might have to pick one up for myself.

Re: Crowley - totally - I feel the same myself, and don't consider him in high regard. He's a great example of what not to do, but studying his mistakes can be both educational and amusing... ;)

@Hotrod_Jesus understandable, but even demigods are at risk when they don't follow proper ritual procedure. The last time I accidentally summoned a d'jinn without proper protection, it ended up dragging me from Joshua Tree all the way up to Seattle and back. If I hadn't been lucky and stumbled across the grave of a forgotten goddess (Illipatae) in the Sisikyous, it's likely I would be still wandering... or at the bottom of Crater Lake.

But yeah, I get it, you were a young man and mad at your dad and decided to get high and try to figure everything out. Negative entities love guys with chips on their shoulders - easy prey. I'd suggest you work on your personal issues with your father before attempting another summoning.
