A LGP station blew up this Saturday, near Bucharest. The station should not have been operational, its authorization had expired, but it transferred LGP nonetheless. The second explosion wounded 56 people, mostly firefighters and first responders. 2 people died.

The finger-pointing among Ro authorities right now is ludicrous. Of course, there is a thread of corruption that ties together everything.

The only saving grace are the numerous blood donations done in solidarity. 1/3

I'm reading up on the case against @internetarchive and I came across Lawrence Lessig's statement:

"We are at a critical moment in the history of culture. The lawsuit that the Internet Archive faces will determine whether the business model of culture is the commercial model alone, or whether there will continue to be a place for libraries, and therefore, continue to be a practice of assuring as much access to our past as is possible."

an even more personal note after - i loved all the conversations i've had, where tech was but one means of building a better world.

i've loved all conversations sparked by the DIY stickers i brought to camp. those silly pieces of adhesive paper led to very beautiful, human connections.

i've barely scratches the surface of the lovely villages set up on the camp grounds. i hold the village in a special spot in my heart.

@ncommander good seeing you, too! it was such a good omen, i think, running into you - a familiar face from another very wholesome event - first thing upon arriving!

i'm still in awe at the experience of attending - it hit a personal note, hard. i've spent years trying to bring people together in Romania for politically-involved tech activism, only to be met with the wall of "tech is apolitical, politics is corrupt, we're here for the tech". i came to camp in the middle of a deep disillusionment and wondering whether what i was craving is possible.

it is possible, turns out. one day, i hope it will be possible in my own home country.

I don't know how to describe it but this post 2016 society has kinda broken me in a way that I can't describe. Yes, I get it, "Lol things have always been bad" blah blah blah, but this dystopian shit is something different. I think the combination of just seeing how comfortable people have become just being outright cruel and bigoted combined with the apathy and just flat out resignation of folks who may be decent, but they've just normalized all of this bullshit killed my youthful spirit.

catileptic,
@catileptic@chaos.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi i hear you, and i often feel the same way myself. i think feeling alienated is a pretty resonable reaction to the violence and opression in society today.

"Unlike sex work, my “good” jobs didn’t threaten to overthrow traditional power structures." (1/3)

catileptic,
@catileptic@chaos.social avatar

"Many sex workers, including myself, have long hypothesized that the reason so many people in power work to keep the commercial sex trade marginalized is because they’re threatened by it—by the idea that it’s the only field where women outearn men, that it’s an industry where women get to call the shots, and that women profit off something that men have been told they’re entitled to for free: sex and attention in equal parts." (2/3)

catileptic,
@catileptic@chaos.social avatar

"In my experience of the corporate landscape, there was none of this radical power structure, only an upholding of the traditional: men talking and women listening, men in powerful positions getting both credit and profit for the labour of women beneath them. Is this what I worked so hard for? I wondered daily." (3/3)

Hey there, long time no see! As many of you are gearing up for we are packing the stickers we have left over from the last exchange and printing some new ones. We can’t wait!

We’ve decided to go for a lighter version of our c3stoc system for Camp as we don’t feel like we need to overcomplicate things. Here’s a few things we’d like to share about our plans ⬇️

catileptic,
@catileptic@chaos.social avatar

@c3stoc will your talk be in English? Absolutely alright if not. I'm just super excited to hear about the printing part since I'm researching getting into making stickers for community purposes as well :) .

I never thought of myself as having any sensitivity to noise. I even thought I was pretty good at tuning out noise / chatter. So I've never used noise-cancelling headphones before.

I bought a pre-owned pair of noise-cancelling headphones and the relief I feel is physical and intense. My mind feels different when I have them on - like I can fit many more thoughts. I feel less tension in my shoulders and neck.

I'm in awe. Makes me wonder about becoming numb to pain / discomfort in other areas.

I'll talk about the importance of end-to-end encryption and why is a direct threat to our privacy and our secure communications. Actually, scratch that: it's a threat to our dignity!

The talk will be in Romanian, addressing a Romania-based audience. It starts at 7PM local time, over on Jitsi: https://meet.jit.si/moderated/0e9a63cccc9d115494d5e57c4252f3a33c5a634e2caaf46a96cff598762e8129 .

I work with @apti to advocate against this EU Commission proposal, as we join our efforts with @edri. https://stopscanningme.eu/

@phillip i think about this alot. To me, it feels like the selling of (useless) things hinges on induced feelings of shame and inadequacy. Trying to bring alot of folks together under the same norms and laws does amplify shame, inadequacy and leave some folks marginalized. However, I wonder whether the answer is to do away with large-scale cooperation. My intuition says "probably not". I wonder about "federating" small groups under shared goals.

Viktor Vilisov wrote an essay on abolishing the family, for Kit. After reading Abolish the Family by Sophie Lewis, Vilisov's essay came as a compact and powerful argument against the nuclear family, against abandoning those who are not tied to us by blood. And against capitalism, which feeds off of the free care work that families do (but mostly female-presenting folks). Deepl allowed me to enjoy Vilisov's writing: https://us5.campaign-archive.com/?u=4ea5740c1fe71d71fea4212ee&id=4c29bb8ae9

Translating pages into Romanian is a bug that infected me late, but hey, better late than never! I'm sticking to translations, for now, but I want to move into authoring full-fledged articles soon.

Was reading this article, about how folks at view and LLMs. These articles quote people working on things like AI ethics, in the Wikipedia Foundation, experts of all kinds saying that what LLMs generate is not factual information, that there's no sense of "meaning" in what AI produces and that this software exploits the good-faith work of people. And then they say "it goes against the grain to bet against AI". https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/18/magazine/wikipedia-ai-chatgpt.html

Are there any examples of tech workers taking direct action against workplaces while organizing? Or is it just the snowden/manning types?

If not, why?

catileptic,
@catileptic@chaos.social avatar

@Pdragos the GitHub ICE walk-out comes to mind: https://github.com/selfagency/microsoft-drop-ice as well as Google employees' show of solidarity when Google fired Timnit Gebru (and lied about it). But I'd love to hear more stories - these are just the ones that make the headlines. I wonder how many more exist and are exchanged by people moving the needle bit by bit.
