New blog entry: The One About Scallion Pancakes

It's not really about food. It's about the time the Trader Joe's scallion pancakes made me cry and have an identity crisis, but not for the reasons you think.

It was really hard to write.

@skinnylatte Having the time and space to make scallion pancakes by hand is also an occasion that both signals and constitutes my at-home-ness.

Leatherfolk who speak non-English languages, I wanna hear about how you do Dom/sub titles ("Sir", "boy", etc), diminutives, formality, that sort of thing.

I've spoken to quite a few people who say they switch to English for this, but I feel like there are probably neat cultural/grammatical options in other languages.

@gdog @gruff @aphyr I didn't know these phrases came from Japanese! Someone had to tell me what they meant when I went to Taiwan in 2020. I was told 抖M/S means 100% M/S. And I always have to think about whether M/S stands for masochist/sadist or master/slave.

Some thoughts on learning Taiwanese.

Why am I learning Taiwanese?

  1. My family's 'native' language is Hokkien (I also speak Teochew better, but it's related so I see it as similar)

  2. We are from Singapore / Malaysia, where there has been zero opportunities to learn to read / write Hokkien

  3. Hokkien is 100% an oral tradition in SE Asia

  4. In recent years I've been watching with interest, the resurgent movement to read / write / speak Taiwanese, in Taiwan

ccshan,
@ccshan@woof.group avatar

@skinnylatte How do you think you'll practice reading/writing it? (How have you been practicing speaking/hearing it?)

I wonder if I know someone who has work in ICFP (functional programming conference) and would be up for mentoring me in writing a paper about @tidalcycles that ICFP reviewers would take seriously? I know (and love) the @farm functional art workshop but am interested in writing something of interest to the wider community of ICFP.

@yaxu I'm happy to take a look!

Watched a video of Gigantiops destructor (the ant with the best eyesight of ants) A lone ant hunting makes a point of sneaking up on the prey from behind, circling them to stay clear of their antennae and out of range of their eyes.

Can that be done without a "theory of the mind of the other" ?

"It can see me here, it can't see me there?"

Were this a mammal I bet people would call this evidence sufficient. Since ants are so tiny, & have such tiny brains we look for other explanations.

Just memorize your social anxiety away!

Why did I get to age 40 not knowing that most of my crippling social anxiety could be cured by simply making flash cards of the faces of all the people I need to interact with at work or at other events and simply memorizing all their names?

This probably won’t for everyone but it’s shocking effective it has been for me. And it’s not like I’m particularly bad with names when learning them “naturally” (although I’m slower than average) 1/

Every year the many names for mathematical statements cause my students a little anxiety. I want to make an Euler diagram to show how they all overlap and intersect— so please mention any words I could add to this list:

statement
proposition
theorem
axiom
postulate
rule
law
definition
formula
corollary
lemma
conjecture
hypothesis

Can you think of any others?

Trying to find a conference deadline or something to write about the new @tidalcycles stuff. Aside from notoriously badly-organised electronic art symposiums, and hyper-homogeneous software engineering conferences (white-men-only spaces can be so weird, even if you're one of them), I can't find anything? I wondered about siggraph but registration costs $1k which seems totally ridiculous. Anyway, I would be happy to hear about suggestions.
Makes me realise how special the @incolico live coding conference is!

ccshan,
@ccshan@woof.group avatar

@yaxu @tidalcycles @incolico You probably already thought about FARM... Mentioned it multiple times in your toot, maybe even...

ccshan,
@ccshan@woof.group avatar

@yaxu @tidalcycles @incolico For what it's worth, the proceedings won't prevent you from self-publishing an essentially identical work elsewhere!

(I also just noticed "Paid registration to the FARM workshop is usually required for paper and demo submitters, but will be waived for performers.")
